Los Angeles unveils new police chief

LOS ANGELES (AFP) – A 32-year veteran who helped clean up a corruption-plagued division of the Los Angeles Police Department was unveiled Wednesday as the city's new top cop.

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa announced the appointment of deputy chief Charlie Beck as head of the LAPD following the decision of chief William Bratton to resign earlier this year.

Villaraigosa said Beck was "the right man to lead the Los Angeles Police Department at the right time."

"He's a man of character and integrity. He's a police officer who is tough on crime, and he's a leader with deep respect and understanding of the police officers under his command ... " Villaraigosa told a news conference.

Beck, 56, is best known for helping to reshape the LAPD's notorious Rampart Division after a wide-ranging corruption scandal during the late 1990s which involved dozens of officers.

Because of terms limits, they have no incentive to stick around much past the first term - by then, they’re already looking for another job.

Not too many blacks left in the LA area...

Mostly whites/Hispanics and asians left in LA nowadays...Most blacks couldn't hack it, too expensive....many others were edged out of the job market by Mexicans/Hispanics that didn't mind actually working....Most of the blacks headed out to the inland empire, San Berdo, Riverside, Alabama, Georgia and Ohio where they're finding all the dead bodies around that guys house in Cleveland.

We'll see how "tough on crime" he really is once the race pimps get through with him after he enforces the law against a black or hispanic.

Bratton is a northeastern liberal whose largest concern was always being politically correct. The LA Sheriff, Lee Baca, isn't much better. He trained our newly minted Orange County Sheriff, Sanda Hutchens, who turned out to be another gun grabbing liberal two seconds after she was sworn in, rescinding a bunch of concealed carry permits using the thinnest of justification. She is widely despised by conservatives and everyone else who believes in the Second Amendment. We are going to do everything we possibly can to replace her.

Waddy talking about?

Crime rates in LA under Bratton dropped dramatically...And were dropping before he ever got into office.

Crime rates in LA, for the most part, are way lower than major cities in most other states. Let me know if ya wanna see the stats.

I'm talking about reality, not ginned up "crime rate" statistics. Show me some independently audited statistics and I will look at them. Ask the people in the LA area who have to put up with South American gangbangers--these people are afraid to leave their houses. The illegal aliens are also a big crime problem, according to the very same LA Times (LAT) you mention. An LAT article covered all of this and has been cited a number of times here on FR.

I couldn't care less about statistics. Those books are always cooked, especially by politically correct liberals. The stats may make you feel better--they do nothing for me. Reality always trumps statistics.

Tell me, do your "independent statistic not get their numbers from the FBI? If not, where specifically do they get them, and could you post a link for your, "Independent statistic"?

Hmmm, then you say this:

I couldn't care less about statistics.. Those books are always cooked

So which is, you'd like to see independent statistics, or are they all cooked?

Lets see your independent stuff you've referred to here.

Thanks!

I offered no "Independent statistic" but rather asked you to show me some independently audited statistics. If you don't have any, that's fine but don't ask me to provide them. If you want to see the LAT stuff, you can Google it or look it up on FR.

My comments stand as my own opinion. If you don't share that opinion, I promise not to pout. Now go pester someone else.

To be honest, same here.

It was really encouraging to hear the mayor and the new chief explain how they are going to be doing more for gang perps than just arrest them.

“If anything has been proven, it doesn’t work to just arrest gang members and put them in prison....”

Gag me.

It sure works for me and my family, and any other potential victims of these thugs.

“We’re going to treat them so nice, they’ll turn over a new leaf. Honest!”

At least the chief won’t be out on the streets in the cross-hairs of these poor mistreated youth.

Actually you don't know what your talking about.

I say this because it's kind of hard to "gin up" or cover up, murders, rapes, and other brutal crimes.

If you have evidence where brutal, violent crimes are covered up, and not reported as crimes, I'd sure like to see it.

Take your time here.

By the way, all cities/counties and states submit their crime statistics to FBI.

You actually live in City of L.A.? I live in San Fernando Valley — lots more personal and property crime around here in past year and a half. It’s been really bad since last spring - lots of assaults, home break-ins, auto theft etc... really frightening and people scared to death.

I don’t believe one word of the so-called lower crime stats. BS — I’m here, and people in all the Valley ‘towns’ are experiencing the same problems, even in the ‘good’ areas.

Well, what you are is ridiculous. I have been in Los Angeles since 1953 -— Way way way before you were ever born, I am fairly certain.

Same locale, same old LAPD; I’ve volunteered for Robbery-Homicide Divisions in Valley, am on first name basis with senior lead officers in several areas of SFV, and you can quote all the stats you want, but we are HERE and we know crime when we experience it. I do not pretend to know what goes on in Rampart (downtown LA) or other such divisions.

So knock off your know-it-all garbage — you can quote statistics til you are blue in the face. They mean nothing unless you are here and really see the crime.

Why are you sending me St. Louis crime stats?

Because you quoted me saying this below in your post #33. Did you forget? Here is what you quoted in 33 below:

>>Crime rates in LA, for the most part, are way lower than major cities in most other states. Let me know if ya wanna see the stats.”<<

Then you said:

I’m speaking purely of L.A.

Purely? lol...What does that mean? I am speaking about LA city, a city like others that have clearly defined city limit boundaries.

You know what boundaries and limits mean right?

City limit boundary's are not a difficult concept to imagine.

I’ve volunteered for Robbery-Homicide Divisions in Valley

You volunteered? Most are assigned. Is this some kind of code?

Well, then, I guess I don’t need to ask if this new guy is going to issue CCW permits, but it doesn’t make a whole lotta difference to me now that I have moved to AZ.

Arming the good Angelenos would put a virtual end to gangs pestering anyone but each other. But maybe you won’t have to worry about that in the very near future as the bangers turn into good citizens under the protection of Antonio and his new chief.

After living in SFV for 15 years, I noticed that the families that had no dads at home had the highest number of drug addicts, drunks and punks. I taught Sunday School to teens who were mostly living without dads in their homes. And sadly, one poor kid had a dad that was smoking crack. Amazingly, some of these kids are making it. This was all very different from life where I grew up, you know, with Dads and Moms. Was it my small town VS the big city?

I’ve watched “The First 48 Hours” detective reality show on cable, mostly St. Louis, Detroit and Miami cops dealing with murder. Very busy people, very sad.
