Junk Science Returns to the White House

Regardless of your tribal affiliations, were you cautiously optimistic when our new president promised to "restore science to its rightful place" in the formulation of public policy? Were you embarrassed by the prior occupant's politicization of issues that should have been decided on a more scientific basis? Did you assume that Barack Obama would surround himself with apolitical science advisors unencumbered by embarrassing anti-science baggage and free of culture-war axes to grind?

To paraphrase a once famous mayor of New York - So how's he doing so far?

You're probably aware that the H1N1 swine flu vaccine supply has fallen dangerously short of the level required to protect the most vulnerable among us. In the spring Federal officials predicted that as many as 120 million doses would be available by now, as opposed to the 16 million doses that actually arrived. Flu vaccine is tricky to make under the best of circumstances, but there are scientifically safe and proven ways to stretch supplies...

--snip--

You're probably aware that a mercury-containing preservative called thimerosal was removed from children's vaccines in 2001 to mollify activists promoting the theory that thimerosal causes autism. According to the Centers for Disease Control, there was then and is still now no scientific evidence linking thimerosal to autism. Despite numerous peer-reviewed studies as well as the empirical fact that autism rates have not plunged since the 2001 thimerosal ban, as one would expect if the preservative were a leading cause of this heart breaking illness, the administration recently made a decision that further reduced the supply of H1N1 vaccine. It switched our country's emergency H1N1 vaccine order from multi-dose to single-dose vials, causing production chain backups as vendors scrambled to accommodate the last-minute switch. Why the change? Because single-dose vials contain a lower concentration of thimerosal...

Correct me if I'm wrong. Thimerosal is not present in single-dose vials, aka "unit dose," of seasonal influenza or the swine flu vaccines. It's only in multi-dose vials of those vaccines. Otherwise, the piece is on the money, IMHO, and the rats must be made to answer.

This article is a good start, but there’s more: Global Warming has proven to be a hoax, because earth has been COOLING since 1998 despite increased greenhouse gas. Even if you hop on the re-named Climate Change bandwagon, there has been NO SCIENTIFIC PROOF that any climate change is man-caused.

Every faux scientist that has pushed this crap so far has had a political benefit to gain and perhaps a fat $ grant to win. This White House declared the issue closed and even equates skeptics of being “just like holocaust deniers”.

This guy is either an idiot or evil, and pushes faux science in order to create panic so he can come to the rescue. Hmm. Like Reichstag?

Academic bias has seen to it that scientific studies are funded on the basis of political correctness.

If your study counters the socialist talking points on global warming, you are seen as “the enemy”.

Al Gore would not shy from a debate if he had the facts. They would not deny the very EXISTENCE of all dissenters in the scientific community if pro-global warming theory people had the facts to counter the research.

Too many examples of data being fudged or even supressed when someone else wants to investigate/review/repeat man-made global warming studies.

I’ll believe that Obama is truly serious about science when his administration starts putting out for public perusal the numerous scientific studies that show that homosexuals aren’t “born gay” or “born that way.”

There are so many studies that link Thimerosal to Autism that I can not link them all .....

Thimerosal is in the flu vaccinations and the Hep B ones that have 3 shots in first few months of baby’s life. So, as the drug companies HAVE taken thimerosal out of some vaccines, and they were given a two year window, I heard...they upped the number of required vaccines, and started recommending flu vaccinations to the pregnant women and newborns which had the (suprise!) thimerosal and other toxins in them......

Common sense tells me that they are poisoning our children...Not only do they make billions off mandatory vaccinations....they make billions on the drugs to treat all the autoimmune diseases that are caused by the vaccines and the kids who have neurological damage—all caused by the toxins in the vaccines....

We have the most vaccinated kids on earth and they are also the most neurological damaged children on earth and you tell me there is no connection when the only difference in children is the massive amt. of vaccinations being forced on pregnant women and newborns. Disgusting.

Sadly, the global warming rule of politically correct science operates in all areas of science including medicine now. It is going to slow progress in science big time.

To those who insist that man intervene to control the global climate, what is the optimal temperature for the planet Earth and which society should get it?

If we are going to designate the “correct” climate and strive to control global temperatures to arrive at it, what is “correct”? Greenland a prosperous growing land? Cooler temperatures at the equator?

Who decides?

Too much of the legislation is about redistributing wealth to the third world because the evil West uses too much of the world’s resources and other nations have a “smaller carbon footprint”. Never mind that none of it will CHANGE climate temperatures. Or that Al Gore and his sponsors will get to skim off the top in the carbon credit exchange system.

You are correct. If mercury limits are based on micrograms per kilogram of body weight per day then small children are kids are being blasted with mercury at the levels that Neverdem linked to in his post to you.

Imagine if a 200 lb man was receiving the same exposure as a small child...it would something like getting 60 to 70 shots in one doctor visit.

Show me the studies. Methylmercury is toxic. Thimerosal is metabolized to ethylmercury which is excreted in stool. Mercury toxicity depends on its oxidation state, and whether it is an inorganic or organic compound, IMHO. I played with elemental mercury as a kid. It made old coins look like new silver coins when you rubbed it on its surface with your fingers.

The left has a history of using science—crackpot science, Lysenkosism if you will— for political purposes. From social Darwinists at Harvard in the late 19th century, to Cold Springs Harbor to Freud, Margaret Mead and Lysenko, to the various climate scares of the last 30 years, to using naturally occurring disease clusters to lobby for political action, liberals, socialists and “progressives” are the masters at this crap. Soft, junk science, are liberal playgrounds.

This writer pretends the Bush administration pushed the same nonsense. It didn’t.

Shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone that Obama is where he is on this. Look at his science czar. Look at the other crazies who surround him. Look at the history of his ideology.

I played with elemental mercury as a kid.

Me too. But whenever I hear someone say: "I was exposed to X as a kid and it didn't harm me", I wonder, if they hadn't been hadn't been exposed to X, if they would now be smarter or healthier.

With the huge number of biochemical reactions in the human body, it's hard to trust that absolutely no mercury entering the body will be converted to a dangerous form.

From Wikipedia: "Quicksilver (liquid metallic mercury) is poorly absorbed by ingestion and skin contact. ... Chronic exposure by inhalation, even at low concentrations in the range 0.7–42 μg/m3, has been shown in case control studies to cause effects such as tremors, impaired cognitive skills, and sleep disturbance in workers."

From another website I find that the evaporation rate for liquid mercury is 7 ug/cm^2/hour at 20*C. Consider a moderately sized kid's bedroom of 12' x 12' x 8' = 32.6 m^3. According to the figures given above, a 1 cm^2 surface of elemental mercury could fill this room with a potentially toxic vapor in somewhere between 3 1/2 hours and 8 days.

Yes, he gets into some good stuff but the first two sentences are so offensive they negate everything else. Why repeat idiotic liberal memes? Why propagate them at all? Maybe if he dropped the lead, “regardless of your tribal affiliations”, the article would be passable. But with it, it isn’t. It implies, strongly, that there are those on both sides who buy the BS the left puts out about the right and science.

Oh..and I forgot...the headline itself shows where he really is. How can junk science return under Obama when it wasn’t there in the previous administration?

You have missed some forrests for some small bushes in your hypersensitivity to routine criticism from the left which the author was attempting to ridicule.

This is not happening in a vacuum, but in the context of Obama's domestic agenda to rescue America from the current recession which is based on mostly reforming health care, which won't happen until the current term of office for the President has expired, as well as nonexistent "green jobs" and man made global warming.

Whether we like it or not, the media and the left has tarred the right as the party of the scientifically ignorant.

Fact: they played politics about vaccine production by not using the adjuvant aluminum hydroxide, which has been used for decades in inactivated vaccines, to extend the number of doses for swine flu vaccine.

Fact: they blew the call about vaccine production using thimerosal as a preservative in multi-dose vials despite all of the controversial news about it from the anti vaccine crowd.

Fact: polar bear populations have been thriving while they exclude new areas from oil and gas exploration.

Fact: current, subsidized corn distilled ethanol and subsidized soy derived biodeisel are more government sponsored boondoggles.

If I forgot any other points the author made, so be it. I didn't want to read the article for a third time. The fact remains that the rat's economic agenda is based on health and phony science. Candidates from the right should be able to make the author's points without skipping a beat.

Do you honestly think I would trust the FDA or CDC for my info on vaccinations? Anyone who trusts info out of the FDA is wearing the tin foil hat just as everyone who trusts zero’s health care plan. Government can NEVER do evil???? or is it the most profoundly evil entity on earth??????

Neil Z. Miller does a great informational manual on the efficacy of vaccinations......(how the FDA works: “In June of 2000 there was a `secret’ meeting of top officials from Big Pharma, FDA and CDC. There they discussed the evidence that vaccines were harmful and instead of alerting parents they spent the rest of the weekend on how they were going to cover it up. Robert Kennedy Jr wrote an article about this story for Rolling Stone in 2005.”

Homosexuals are born that way. At least 90% of them are (some may be imprinted through abuse of some kind, though many sexually abused kids are still hetero as adults).

It’s the uterine environment that determines sexual self-identification and orientation (to partners). Pollutants in our world affect our women (all of us) and their uterine environment.

To do one’s best to avoid this, for years before you have a baby, try to avoid plastics in or near one’s food, ESPECIALLY warm food, and water, and eat organic fruits and vegetables only, and meats that are grass-fed or free-range. Dairy and eggs only from such animals. Avoid anything with any form of corn in it, except organic corn. Including chips. Eat out rarely. Get a safe water source and carry your water in safe portable containers. No chemical fertilizers, herbicides, insecticides in your home. Clean with vinegar, baking soda, essential oils, hydrogen peroxide. It sounds like a lot to do, but once you get used to it, it’s not so bad.

Attempt to control your environment as best you can and learn which supplements fight against the over-estrogening of the chemicals around us. Only THEN get pregnant. And there are no guarantees even then. The first thing that happens in a polluted pond is that the fish and frogs get sexual or genital defects. Who the heck are we that we think we are immune?

Have more empathy for gays. It is not their fault.
