CHICAGO (AP) - Nearly half of all U.S. children and 90 percent of black youngsters will be on food stamps at some point during childhood, and fallout from the current recession could push those numbers even higher, researchers say. The estimate comes from an analysis of 30 years of national data, and it bolsters other recent evidence on the pervasiveness of youngsters at economic risk. It suggests that almost everyone knows a family who has received food stamps, or will in the future, said lead author Mark Rank, a sociologist at Washington University in St. Louis.
"Your neighbor may be using some of these programs but it's not the kind of thing people want to talk about," Rank said.
The analysis was released Monday in the November issue of Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine. The authors say it's a medical issue pediatricians need to be aware of because children on food stamps are at risk for malnutrition and other ills linked with poverty.
"This is a real danger sign that we as a society need to do a lot more to protect children," Rank said.
Food stamps are a Department of Agriculture program for low-income individuals and families, covering most foods although not prepared hot foods or alcohol. For a family of four to be eligible, their annual take-home pay can't exceed about $22,000.
According to a USDA report released last month, 28.4 million Americans received food stamps in an average month in 2008, and about half were younger than age 18. The average monthly benefit per household totaled $222.

“Half Of US Kids Will Get Food Stamps”
And they shall be known as Democrats.
Does that count as reparations?
“we’re ALL socialists now!”
50% of children are on foodstamps, 25% are obese, I'm wondering how much overlap there is in those numbers.
This from Chicago. Apparently their community organizers, senators, and sitting pres_ent haven’t done a good job.
about a month ago, I was in this local super-market, and this black transexual was hitting on me, and was offering to buy me groceries with his\her food stamps.
They have defined the “need level” or the “poverty level” so high that a majority of kids’ families now qualify? Yes, they are buying Democrat votes with government handouts.
The key of course here is “at some point”. You’ve got 18 years of statistical “childhood” it’s not too hard to figure that over the course of that time some temporary bad thing might happen that puts the family on the dole for a couple of months. That doesn’t mean we’ve got a horrible poverty problem, just means that 18 years is a long time and feces occurs.
...must mean another cut in Social Security
Did you get your freezer stocked up? ;-)
..not anymore ..according to rats...if you have a 27 yr old living at home...he's eligible under the health care bill
no, the cashier said sharing them wasn’t allowed :(
Nope ...not yet. They don’t give out watermelons.
It’s a danger sign alright but not the way this guy charaterizes it.
That's a crock. The only reason they are at risk of malnutrition is because the "mothers" do not know how to cook. I firmly believe in a mandatory course for food stamp recipients covering basic cooking and budgeting skills.
That was my thought on it too.
I’m a conservative, but when my ex-POS left me with two babies, I was on food stamps for a few months until I got a decent job and could afford it on my own. I am grateful that safety net was there and I have more than paid it back since then.
I would say they’ve done their job very well b/c socialism and a society of needy people is what they want...a helpless, hapless populace beholden to them IS the goal.
This study reminds me of the hysteria about the homeless during Reagan’s time.
What was it, 10 million homeless then 15 million or more under BushOne.
No stats during Clinton’s time.
And last year, some stories but they’ve all magically disappeared under Obama’s tenure.
Who can believe these studies? They prolly count the same kids gazillions of times.
Like they just acknowledged that the 80’s coffee studies about its ill effects had faulty methodology - anyone who died and drank coffee was included - kinda like smoking stats - if you died in a car accident and were a smoker, smoking was also considered a cause of death.
Good for you, and I mean that, but I would guess you are the exception.
I think foodstamps can be used to purchase soda and chips.
Astonishing,isn’t it?
But not “energy drinks” LOL
I would say that I am, sad as that is.
LOL!!! You don’t want to get me started on any of that :)
Actually, I don’t think you are. I honestly believe that the vast majority of people using food stamps are like you and me and use them in emergency situations. It is the abusers that get the attention, thus causing the dumping on everyone who may need a temporary hand-up.
Bingo!!! In Stockton California this summer they passed out free lunch in parks with no means testing, because schools were no open to feed children. What teenager would turn down free food if offered?
hahaha! I guess it must be tough being a woman at times.
Thankfully I landed a new job starting March 2, but my income for February was $0.000.
Half Of US Kids Will Get Food Stamps
Plus a Wii and a pony, thanks to $ from 0bama’s stash.
That is so true. Most, if not all, have absolutely no idea what to do with the food the stamps provide. They’ve never made anything from scratch, they don’t have the facilities to bake and certainly don’t have mixers, blenders, food processors and the like and are more inclined to sell the food stamps for cash and buy fast food.
A basic survival skills course should come with every application given to those who are in poverty. Heck, even those men and women who qualify for assistance with their jobless benefits would have difficulty working with the items that are available. I and my family lived for three months on the food obtained from the food banks I support. (As I’ve said, I never gave my baby baby food I didn’t try first. If I wouldn’t eat it, neither would he.) I learned how to make a lot of things I had never made before and it took access to a computer for ideas and recipes to make it work. I doubt sincerely those amenities are available to the average impoverished food stamp recipient.
I’m wondering why their fathers are not bringing home the bacon and why their mothers aren’t cooking the bacon.
Or they're just too damn lazy to cook.
My daughter teaches 4th grade in an upscale suburb here in Indiana.
45% of her class does not have an intact family - meaning living with birth parents.
Now ponder what that number is for the inner city.
The "Great Society" has had 45 years to wreak havoc on the family structure of the poor.
There's nothing wrong with a safety net. It's not like Americans have hearts of stone. It's the life long hammocks that are the problem.
There's that as well.
I went shopping about a year ago with neighbor, we were both using food stamps at the time. I spent about $30 on lasagna ingredients and she spent $60 on Stouffers frozen lasagna. What she bought lasted her less than a month, I put enough in the freezer for several months. Granted, it did take me an entire afternoon to make it.......but there is the lazy factor again :)
These statistics can be spun any which way, but imho, we've created a society of dependence and little or no jobs for low-mid level skilled workers. Even the low-mid level skilled jobs that are available don't pay very well (which was not true in the past). Liberalism and social programs have also destroyed the nuclear family and denigrated religious values, which is the bedrock of creating productive members of society.
There is a way for the other half to participate.
When I grew up in LA they bused up kids from South Central who all got free lunches. They would sell me their ticket (which would cost me $1.50) for only 25c. That added up to real money over time.
“We’re not buying votes;
We’re feeding children.”
Not if conservatives and moderate conservatives take back the House.
The parents of these kids need jobs. Then they won’t need and mostly can’t get food stamps.
Geez, I wish we could cut off most of the freebeees in this country. I’m so sick of hearing about “needy” families. If it wasn’t for rats, we would have very few needy families - not entire cities filled with them.
Many, many, many of them are black. My husband is a teacher, and the fattest kids in school are black. I see them out and about, and the majority of the fat ones are black. Some whites and Hispanics, too, but by far the greatest percentage of them are black. Most of them are from single-parent homes and the mother is a big fat sow, too.
Oh, it's a real danger sign all right.
When we start 'protecting' more than a MILLION a year; let me know.
CHOICE is the biggest KILLER of all!
