The Washington Post reports the Obama White House played a critical, behind-the-scenes role in persuading former GOP District 23 congressional candidate Dede Scozzafava to endorse Democrat Bill Owens over Conservative Doug Hoffman.

If true, the Post report reveals a striking example of the administration's penchant for tinkering in regional politics.

Scozzafava pulled out of the race Saturday after falling to a distant third place in the polls. Initially, national GOP leaders praised her decision as "selfless." They endorsed Hoffman, and apparently assumed Scozzafava would do the same.

On Sunday, however, Scozzafava instead endorsed the Democrat. White House officials and left-leaning pundits cited this as evidence of a schism in the GOP, which they say is becoming a narrow party of ideological conservatives.

New York Republicans have warned that Scozzafava's endorsement could throw the race to the Democrat.

According to a report buried in a Post profile of White House political director Patrick Gaspard published on Monday, the White House spent the weekend trying to lure Scozzafava's endorsement away from the GOP.

"Over the last few days," the Post profile reported, "Gaspard has also had a quiet hand in some of the good news to come Democrats' way.

"Steeped in New York politics, he played a pivotal role in the effort over the weekend to persuade Republican State Assemblywoman Dede Scozzafava to endorse the Democratic candidate in the special election in New York's 23rd Congressional District, two senior White House officials said Sunday."

This would explain the accusation by Valerie Jarrett on GMA (check my source) that the party is "growing more extreme and more marginalized."

Why say Republicans? Very few endorsed her and some were required to do so by Party rules. Not their fault her nomination turned out to be suspect. NY GOP Chair and the County Chairs of NY deserve the black eye. Lay the blame right on NY politics which gave her the nomination. If you are in NY demand the resignations of any of the County Chairs that didn’t vote the way their County wanted along with the NY GOP Chair who turned a blind eye.

Last I checked Fred Thompson is a Republican who came out early and often for Hoffman. He isn’t a Party person and is not bound by any Rules.

Why do some of you try to keep tarring and feathing the GOP when most of us don’t even donate to the RNC and in all seriousness, you cannot blame the National Party for following their rules when the County Chairs are the ones that broke the rules. Once it came out the National people backed right off and supported Hoffman most of them before she withdrew.

I have seen reported that Scuzzy refused to commit to stay a Republican after being elected. Follow that thru. I suspect this was a setup from the git go. If she won, she switched parties if necessary to keep a D majority. Otherwise, she remained a snake in the grass providing Obama bipartisan support for the next several trillion dollars in spending and Socialized Medicine.

No wonder Obama appointed her predecessor to a defense post. It cleared the way for a special election where Obama would be delighted to see either candidate elected—Owens or Scuzzy—either worked for Obama and Pelosi. I wonder how involved the “R” vacancy committee was in this? It looked like a win for Obama either way. Very Chicago style. And the biggest joke was that the snake would come from a conservative district who would have elected any credible R—we didn’t have no nominate a leftie to win the election.

That Scuzzy could not hold the R vote against a third party challenger tells you everything you have to know. She did not represent the voters in her district.

Look at her 1) voting record 2) positions in this race and 3) husband. The administration set this all up when the sitting Congressman was named to a relatively unimportant post; either way they'd get a Democrat. If she jumped ship the drive-by media would have a field day with how the poor little thing (metaphorically, not literally, for sure) just had to "stay where she was" by becoming a Dem, because the Republican Party had "left her." If she didn't jump we'd be endlessly tormented by stories about how this new "maverick" shows the GOP where its future is by voting in lockstep with the Evil Party. In some ways, if Owens had won via the split, the White House would actually get the least attractive option -- just one more Dim vote in the House but no Sturm und Drang from the collaborationist press about the "schism" in the GOP.

Let's hope and pray they get a citizen legislator who makes a lot of righteous noise instead.

Thanks for this post. It fills in a lot of areas where Obama's behavior has been difficult to understand.

The Cambridge police episode comes to mind: where his comments about the police acting "stupidly" and the subsequent 'beer' summit did nothing to heal race relations, but aggravated them.

This 'tinkering' in areas where he has no business can only lead to trouble. This idiot reminds me of someone who, for whatever reason, gets a kick out of arranging a meeting between, say, a guy with a can of gasoline and a guy with a match. In my day, a punk like this got his teeth smashed in 'cause nobody likes a punk.
