How Israel Destroyed Syria's Al Kibar Nuclear Reactor
Spiegel ^ | Erich Follath and Holger Stark

Posted on 11/02/2009 1:09:36 PM PST by ventanax5

In September 2007, Israeli fighter jets destroyed a mysterious complex in the Syrian desert. The incident could have led to war, but it was hushed up by all sides. Was it a nuclear plant and who gave the orders for the strike?

The mighty Euphrates river is the subject of the prophecies in the Bible's Book of Revelation, where it is written that the river will be the scene of the battle of Armageddon: "The sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up to prepare the way for the kings from the East."

Today, time seems to stand still along the river. The turquoise waters of the Euphrates flow slowly through the northern Syrian provincial city Deir el-Zor, whose name translates as "monastery in the forest." Farmers till the fields, and vendors sell camel's hair blankets, cardamom and coriander in the city's bazaars. Occasionally archaeologists visit the region to excavate the remains of ancient cities in the surrounding area, a place where many peoples have left their mark -- the Parthians and the Sassanids, the Romans and the Jews, the Ottomans and the French, who were assigned the mandate for Syria by the League of Nations and who only withdrew their troops in 1946. Deir el-Zor is the last outpost before the vast, empty desert, a lifeless place of jagged mountains and inaccessible valleys that begins not far from the town center.

You can be sure as the sun rises, that if the Israelis plan on attacking Iran, AND THEY TELL OBAMA, THE HOW WHEN WHERE AND WHY ETC. BEFORE HAND, Iran will be notified in a heart beat.

Mossad should lay down some test runs, i.e. let out some information to the Obama people and see if it gets into the hands of the Iranians. And if so, they better wise up.

Obama is a bigger threat to Israel than he is to us. He’s someone whom in the end, will have been a footnote in our history.

Whatever he does to the United States can be undone...

Interesting article. Do you think Israel used nuclear weapons in their bombing run against Syria? Read the article and decide for yourself. My guess is that they did. Small nuclear weapon device that was sent via their jets.

I recall reading about something called a "canary trap" designed to find the source of leaks of classified material. Non-critical classified information is fed to the suspects, but each gets a slightly different version. Which version gets leaked ID's the perp.

Re: nikos1121's My guess is that they did. Small nuclear weapon device that was sent via their jets.

I hate to quote Nancy Pelosi, but "Are you serious?"

If the Israelis had used even a small tactical nuclear weapon, it would be front page news. You cannot hide any nuclear explosion these days, not even the smallest one capable of being built.

It would be hypothetically possible for the Israelis to have salted the area or their bombs with radioactive trace elements, but that would be stupid on their part as all nuclear materials can be traced by their chemical fingerprint to indicate where, when and who processed it.

If you are going to offer up such an ignorant guess as you do above, first know something about what you are talking about before you speak or run the risk of making a complete fool out of yourself.

Can anyone explain to me WHY it was hushed up by all sides?

Seems like Syria would be squealing like all get out that they were pre-emptively attacked. It would be more evidence that Israel is anti-Arab.

The fact that Syria basically did nothing makes me wonder if an attack against Iran would be the same.

Israel is a remarkable country. In a sense we are not all Berliners, we are all Israelis. Their economy is probably per capita number one in the world, and they are in the middle of a fire storm. When Arabs live in Peace among them, they too prosper.

The Syrians figured they were playing with children, and got caught with their pants down. I think the Eye Doctor knows that he can and will be taken out, if he looks cross eyed at Israel.

I seem to recall that the multi billion dollar radar defense system purchased from the Russians, for some reason was knocked out and not functioning, the morning they attacked.

If you read the article you get the sense that nuclear weapons were used.

Can you imagine what it’s like living in Israel? THen you find that your neighbor is developing nuclear weapons...

You blot them out like a flea, and not a peep from them.

I think too, this Russian ship that was hijacked has more to the story than we think.

Re: REad the article. Something is strange. The people saying they saw a column of fire. And keep your personal comments about what you think of someone posting here to yourself.

I read the article, old sport, and 1) by going by your ‘modus operandi’ in guessing we must assume if they saw a ‘column of fire’ then it must be a dastardly Israeli Cecil B. DeMille re-shooting the scene when Pharaoh is stopped from chasing Mose at the Red Sea.

2) When someone's words show they do not know anything of what they are speaking about, they invite comment on their complete lack of knowledge.

Again, Nancy Pelosi’s voice rings loud and clear: “Are you serious?”

Get the facts on nuclear materials and explosions, then come back and talk with the adults.

Bender is right, a nuke, even a small tactical one would have been detected instantly, and Israel called to task for using one. The pro-Arab MSM would have been screaming about it 24/7.

Remember, the Arabs claimed in the 1948 war that the Israelis used nukes.

I had one for about 40 plus years until I retired... but it looks like educating you would be a new full time exercise.

However, your FR mails and ignorant, childish ways, nikos, like the great Milton says, subdues my patience.

I'll end this conversation as you show you cannot hold up your end of a intelligent discussion. So, rant and howl on as all nine year old boys do when they cannot get their way.

Just stay out off the highway of intelligence or you will get flat run over and no one would look back as you have made it so very, very plain, it would be a total waste of time.

A bit of anti-Israel contradiction:

This...

For the Israelis, it made little difference whether a few guards were killed or a large number of people.

...doesn't jive with this, later:

The explosion completely destroyed the SUV and ripped apart Mughniyah's body. He was killed instantly. But the explosive charge was apparently calculated so carefully that nearby buildings were barely harmed. The terrorist leader remained the only victim on that night in Damascus.
...and they bought the US MSM meme:

At the time, the administration of then-President George W. Bush, citing CIA information, constantly repeated the false claim that Saddam Hussein possessed weapons of mass destruction.

Very interesting article.

Hey, nuke, I never was arguing about there being traces of radioactive materials about the site. My point was there was no way the Israelis used a tactical nuke on it.

I know that, I was making a point to the slow one who insists Israel used a nuke weapon and pointed to the radiation at the site to prove his point. Evidentally it never occurred to them that a nuclear plant will produce/contain radioactive substances.

Perfectly understandable that on the one hand the Israelis would want to cause as many casualties as possible at Al-Kibar, as they were directly involved in the work on nuclear
materials, and using a light hand in the assasination of Mugniyah in downtown Damasus - why overdo it when merely blowing up one guy? I’m sure Mossad has special charges prepared for killing one, two, or a vanful of bad actors
very precisely.

The mysteries in the story are: what happened to the Syrian diplomat in London, was this really a unguarded laptop or did Mossad get to the guy with an offer he dare not refuse,
and what happened to Alireza Asgari?

Great article, had no trouble understanding it, but the wordiness is a side effect of having been translated from German.
