NEW YORK (AP) - Pivotal presidential campaigns are frequently defined in retrospect by documentaries. "The War Room" chronicled Bill Clinton's political operation in 1992, adding a phrase to the political lexicon in the process. Alexandra Pelosi's "Journeys With George" captured the oddities of a national campaign on board George W. Bush's airplane in 2000.
The makers of "By the People: The Election of Barack Obama," which premieres Tuesday—Election Night—on HBO, wouldn't mind the same status.
"That was our hope—that we would create something for history," said filmmaker Alicia Sams, who made the documentary with colleague Amy Rice and a key assist from actor Edward Norton.
Rice was inspired by Obama's speech to the Democratic National Convention in 2004 and wanted to do a film about him as an up-and-coming political leader. Her friend Sams signed on, but they couldn't get their phone calls to Obama's office returned until Norton called on their behalf. He's still involved as a producer.
They got lucky. They wound up with a far more important story than they had dreamed about.
Even though they began filming nearly a year before Obama announced his candidacy in February 2007, being on the ground early didn't guarantee them anything. They were nearly shut down when the campaign began.
Obama aides like David Axelrod didn't want Rice and Sams around. He worried about leaks and whether the presence of cameras would cause people to act like they were in a reality show—concerns that proved amusing in retrospect. Access was a constant concern.

Not only is he the official U.S. ambassador for Earth Hour 2009, but he was on CNN’s Larry King Live this week, along with Alanis Morissette, to explain just how this symbolic act of the entire world turning out their lights for one hour will encourage world leaders to cap or tax carbon emissions through legislation. Norton even compared turning out the lights for an hour to the famous civil rights march in Selma, Alabama in March of 1965:

Even The One himself claimed that his parents met at the Selma march in order to give His birth more meaning (even though He was three and a half years old when the first Selma march occurred).
It’s fashionable for Hollywood celebrities to “give back” by donating time – and sometimes money -to a pet cause, be it cancer, AIDS, or whatever. Not only does it make them look like they care (and yes, sometimes they really do), but it gives them free publicity. Everybody wins, right? Unfortunately for them, that publicity sometimes makes them look like knuckleheads.
Global warming has become a popular cause because it’s easy to tell other people how to live their lives while not necessarily making changes in yours. Just by “getting the word out” you’re helping. If Arianna Huffington doesn’t have to live the life of a global warming paragon, why should anyone else? And since you don’t have to have a complicated scientific degree (one only needs to look to Al Gore’s successful global warming career), just about anyone who “cares” can be an expert. Sheryl Crow, Laurie David, Leonardo DiCaprio and Carmen Diaz are just a few of the glitterati to lend their names to the global warming cause...”
Edward Norton Promises To Beat Sarah Palin's Marathon Time
Back in Alaska in 2005, Sarah Palin ran 26-plus miles in under four hours. And when he stopped by MTV News recently, Norton swore he'd destroy that time in this Sunday's race.
"I'm gonna beat Sarah Palin like a rug!" he joked during the interview. "Palin I would like to beat just on principle."
Norton is running as part of the Maasai Marathon, a group dedicated to raising money for the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust, which promotes conservation, education and health services in communities in southern Kenya. While he trains, he's been tweeting up a storm in an effort to raise money and awareness for the cause.

“U.S. leader Barack Obama ignored pleas from his aides to scrap a documentary on his rise to the top after declaring his interest in the presidency - because he recognised the Edward Norton film would offer the public an interesting slant on the American political process.
Fight Club star Norton, who was leading the team behind the project, was stunned when the Illinois Senator announced a run for the White House while the actor was making a film about him - and begged Obama not to scrap the documentary.
Norton knew Obama would be persuaded not to be a part of a film as he fought for the presidency - and he’s glad he approached the politician before his advisors did.
He explains, “We thought, ‘Maybe this guy will run for President in 2012...’ and I went down and met him and we discussed the idea of a long-term political diary, chronicling his experiences... and they let us begin that.
“By the late summer of the first year that we were doing this... we began to grasp that this was going to happen now.
“I went back to him and said, ‘I’m sure that everyone will tell you that this has gotta stop... I implore you, no matter what happens, this’ll be an incredible window on the country and how people react to you candidacy.’

He was head of public policy for the Wilderness Society in the ’80s
His grandfather, James W. Rouse, was a real estate developer, civic activist and philanthropist. He built the first-ever shopping mall.

Just for the few people who probably don’t know it, HBO is basically an arm of the Democrat Party and is a big advocate of all leftist causes. They’re so blatant about it it’s a big joke. My wife and I subscribed to it for “The Sopranos”, but now it’s looking like a huge waste of money. Their own “entertainment” since the Sopranos is mostly mediocre or lousy as are most of the flicks it shows.
