Trick or Treat: Obamas Expect 2,000 Children At White House For Halloween

President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle, invited more than 2,000 children to the White House on Saturday night for a Halloween party.

The children, from Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia, were to do their trick-or-treating on the most famous front porch in America, the North Portico.

There was no word on what the White House treats might include; Mrs Obama is a vocal supporter of healthy eating, and regularly invites local children to help her work in her vegetable garden.

Later, in the East Room, the first couple were to be joined by Joe Biden, the vice-president, and his wife, Jill, at a Halloween reception for military families and White House staff and their children.

While the president and the first lady were not planning to don fancy dress, some of their young guests were rumoured to be dressing as the Obamas.

The Obamas are not the first to show Halloween spirit at the White House. President George H.W. Bush and his wife, Barbara, hosted 500 children on Halloween in 1989, loading them up with treats but also teaching them about the dangers of drugs. The child came decked out in costumes; some Secret Service agents came dressed as clowns.
