Mark Steyn: Obama makes Bush his blame czar
Orange County Register (CA) ^ | October 30, 2009 | Mark Steyn

Posted on 10/31/2009 8:54:04 AM PDT by Oldeconomybuyer

It's now Obama's war, his jobless rate, his debt, etc.

Valerie Jarrett announced the other day that "we're going to speak truth to power."

Who's Valerie Jarrett? She's "Senior Adviser" to the president of the United States – i.e., the leader of the most powerful nation on the face of the Earth. You would think the most powerful man in the most powerful nation would find a hard job finding anyone on the planet to "speak truth to power" to. But I suppose if you're as eager to do so as his Senior Adviser, there's always somebody out there: The Supreme Leader of Iran. The Prime Minister of Belgium. The Deputy Tourism Minister of the Solomon Islands. But no. The Senior Adviser has selected targets closer to home: "I think that what the administration has said very clearly is that we're going to speak truth to power.

At some point the Caesar cult has to manifest itself in an achievement – I mean a real achievement, not merely some dud prize handed out by Norwegian Lefties. Afghanistan is his now: Notwithstanding "years of drift," whether it winds up as victory or defeat is his call. It's Obama's war. It's Obama's economy. The stimulus bill is his stimulus, and for $787 billion it created 30,000 new jobs (according to the government) or (according to the Associated Press) 25,000. Either way, you do the math. It's Obama's unemployment rate, Obama's dollar, Obama's debt. Pace Valerie Jarrett, the truth is you are the power. And those on the receiving end of it are going to be speaking a lot louder in the months ahead.

Mark points out the elephant in the room.

speak truth to power

I've grown to absolutely HATE this expression. It's really just self congratulatory code for lefties mouthing off their standard talking points to Republicans, to applause from other leftist loons. There's never any real truth involved, only Marxist ideology and myths.

What exactly does “speak truth to power” mean? I recognize the individual words but don’t understand them as used in this phrase. Where did this particular grouping of words originate? Anyone?

Steyn slips in at least one indestructible gem in every IED he plants for these inept martinets leading the long march to tedium and despair; in this piece, it has to be this small treasure:

” Rocco Landesman, Speaking Goof to Power, isn’t the first Obama groupie to enjoy the kinky frisson of groveling obsequiousness, but he’s set an impressive new standard in public revelation thereof.”

It is a once-useful mantra of the Civil Rights movement meant as a slam against The Man; durable, risible and largely forgotton, Jarrett now returns the meaningless to the hopeless as she throws it over her shoulder as though it were merely a few grains of protective salt.

Actually, Bush has been the Democrats go-to blame guy since the 2000 election. Now with Bush the “blame czar”, his usefulness for Demlibs is good for another 75 years. After all, Herbert Hoover is still being catching hell.

NEA Spokesman:

“’If you accept the premise, and I do, that the United States is the most powerful country in the world, then Barack Obama is the most powerful writer since Julius Caesar. That has to be good for American artists.’”

Steyn’s comment:

“I suppose so. He could invade somewhere and force the natives to accept degrading roles in NEA-funded performance art.”

I couldn’t stop laughing.

I don’t know the origin of the term. It has been rattling around as a self-congratulatory sacrament of the left for quite some years.

An example, if you ran up to Dick Cheny and screamed “F*** You,” I’m pretty sure you are “speaking truth to power.” Another example, if, say, you forge memos about Bush’s service in the National Guard, you are trying to speak truth to power as their essence is true, even if the documents are forged.

It’s like “patriotic dissent,” though. The meaning changes when power does. Valerie Jarret’s problem is that she didn’t read the nomenclature change memo last November. She is so last year.

The most powerful woman in the inner circle of the most powerful man on Earth has decided to speak truth to powerful people standing in the street with handwritten placards saying "THIS GRAN'MA ISN'T SHOVEL READY."

ROFL! These people have lived their lives so insulated from middle-class America that they can't even communicate simple ideas without picking a slogan out of the leftist hat. They control the executive and legislative branch, so exactly what "power" are they speaking to? Gran'ma?

According to Wikipedia, Milton Mayer (1908-1986) was raised a Jew. The article doesn't say so but evidently he later became a Quaker. He is described as a journalist who wrote for The Progressive (a magazine founded by Robert LaFollette, Sr.). He was a pacifist in WWII.

The article doesn't say he was black but there is no reason to think he was...even if Milton Bradley is black.

"speak truth to power"

1. Jarrett denigrated (dictionary: "to treat or represent as lacking in value or importance; belittle; disparage) the Office of the Presidency of the United States with her use of this phrase.

2. Does she not understand that millions regard that Office to be the greatest seat of power in the world?

3. Her feeble attempt to "disparage" a legitimate organ of "the People," Fox News (under our Constitution, "the press"), reveals much more about her own inadequacy.

4. On the other hand, is it possible this spokesman for the Executive Branch inadvertently showed, in fact, it understands that "We, the People" do, in the final analysis, hold the power through the ballot box, and that close examination of current policies and practices, if exposed, may endanger its power grab?

The Axelrods, Emanuels, and Jarretts of Chicago politics are bringing their Chicago game before a national audience. Will their "amateur hour" approach performance bear up under the scrutiny and limits of a First Amendment designed to protect "the People's" freedoms to criticize and dissent?

Two statements from former Presidents may be informative here concerning the power of "We, the People":

"No experiment can be more interesting than that we are now trying, and which we trust will end in establishing the fact, that man may be governed by reason and truth. Our first object should therefore be, to leave open to him all the avenues to truth. The most effectual hitherto found, is the freedom of the press. It is, therefore, the first shut up by those who fear the investigation of their actions."(Underlining added for emphasis) --Thomas Jefferson to John Tyler, 1804. ME 11:33

And, "The President himself is no more than a representative of public opinion at the time of his election; and as public opinion is subject to great and frequent fluctuations, he must accommodate his policy to them; or the people will speedily give him a successor; or either House of Congress will effectually control his power. . . ." - John Quincy Adams

I ABSOLUTELY AGREE! It would be one thing if the people speaking it were in any danger. I am thinking of the Chinese Students and the man in front of the tanks. I am thinking of the Iranian protestors just months ago that Obama couldn't hear. THESE PEOPLE WERE SPEAKING AND THEN THEY WERE DYING!

Ms Jarrett demonstrates her complete idiocy by bleating out this hackneyed phrase. May she choke on it when the voters send her and her compatriots into the ashcan of history!

I thought it meant telling the Emperor that he had no clothes. We do it all the time when we point out to the agency scientists on the Klamath that their science is erroneous and (intentionally) contrived to support a political agenda. We do so when we tell the water board that they have no constitutional authority to dictate that county government pass an ordinance to implement their agenda. Been doing it for years. I love to speak truth to power.

Hey, Valerie! Here's some truth: you and your boss, Barry Obama, along with Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid and all the other main Democrat movers and shakers, are scurrilous machines of destruction of the Constitution and the nation it was written to protect. You deserve nothing but obloquy and to be thrown unceremoniously with Nazis, Soviets, and other statists like yourselves onto the ash heap of history.

In the minds of these leftist ideologues, the “real” power is held by corporations, shadowy rich white Republicans, and their vast right-wing conspiracy. Obama and company are tribunes of the people battling these amorphous special interests who hold this all of this “power.”

That’s why a crap-for-brains like Valerie Jarrett can say she is “going to speak truth to power” with a straight face.
