With Obamalamadingdong C in C? Nah. That's probably what they told the Colombians, though. With Obama in charge the bases are more likely being put there to help Chavez overthrow Columbia.....

I’m a little puzzled. I think it’s more likely to assist in the overthrow of the Colombian government, which is just about the only non-leftist government left in LatAm. Obama is very favorable to Venezuela, and so is Hillary Clinton, so I don’t see us attacking VZ, even though it is the historic and modern enemy of Colombia.

But maybe it’s a deal with the devil. There is talk that Uribe, who has been good but should now think of writing his memoirs, wants to run for a prohibited third term. (He shouldn’t!) Maybe he is doing this because Bambi offered him some help with this in exchange for these bases, which I think will probably actually be used to help Venezuela and other leftist countries and neutralize Colombia.

That’s a very good guess because Hugo Chavez is completely against this move. Looks like Columbia is concerned about it’s soveriegnty and needs some help with drug trafficing as well. From what I read on that website, we’re not building 7 bases - we’re being given access to 7 military bases that already exist.

That’s pretty vague — are we talking about a troop committment of a brigade (division?), or a company w/attachments??

What would be the mission, in light of Hugo’s increasing belligerence towards Colombia??

Things could get pretty sticky in a hurry, if this is another ‘well-thought-through’ Obama Op......

Didn’t congress vote down a trade deal with Colombia before the president left office? This isn’t making sense to me.

possible. but i still don´t get it. how about using this “resources” to seal the mexican border for example instead of burning the tax money somewhere in south america? i mean does the US government really has to stick its nose in any corner of this world?

Special Ops no doubt. Meaning low level commitment, high level output.

There have recently been Venezuelan military incursions into Columbia...in an effort to destabilize this nation. Though these bases are supposedly ours, training and supporting the Colombian military is the primary objective allowing them to police the production and trafficing of opiates. Colombia has only recently climbed out of the hell-hole created by the drugcartels and they now enjoy some sense of normal life. Reverting back to the powerful drugcartel days is not a option.

yeah it really looks this way. i mean Irak a little bit more stable (but still far away from secure), Afghanistan a total mess, pakistan.... and now there is any need to get involved in possible new conflicts in south america too?

My guess is the CIA/DEA need these bases to safely move cocaine into the US. As a plus, the bases will make good transshipment points when we start selling Chavez weapons & ammo.

After all, GWB fought the Narco-terrorists, so naturally I expect Obama to embrace them. /deeply cynical

I’m aware of that, and that has always been the objective with our bases in Colombia. The question is why we are doing this now, because the Dems were heavily opposing any more aid to Colombia only a few months ago and in fact were trying to support Hugo Chavez in his undeclared war against Colombia (fought mostly through FARC/ELN).

So what has changed? Why are they suddenly not objecting to this and why is Obama, who openly supports Chavez, going along with this?

Its been our longstanding policy in Latin America to support democracies willing to accept our support. Chavez is a wildcard.. too unstable to be relied upon. His beligerent build-up of the military doesn’t bode well for his neighbors.. too destabilizing. Its only a matter of time before he is either deposed or flexes his new military might. Either way, someone(US)will need to step in and correct the problem...ergo the new US presence.

We may be looking in the wrong direction. I have for years thought that the logical “grab” by Chavez would be part of Guyana.

By staging a lot of military forces on the border with Colombia is Chavez trying to distracting us from a very easy target to the east, a target that Venezuela has been claiming as theirs for YEARS!

Don’t forget, Bush’s 100,000 acre ranch in Paraguay gives us eight bases in the region.

The US gets seven Colombian bases

Hmmm...
Obama hopes to help out Hugo if the serfs in Venezuela turn
against him?

Actually, a week ago I heard on KCMO 710AM out of Kansas City
that Hugo was telling people to stop singing when taking showers...
that Venezuelans need to get their showers done in three minutes,
just like Hugo.
Apparently Hugo is blaming a shortage of rainfall on El Nino...
even the hydroelectric dams are at such a low level that they
can't really turn the generators at the dams.

The real irony is that an petroleum-producing country like Venezuela...
is now itself short on resources!!!
