Truth to Power’
NRO ^ | 31 oct 09 | Mark Steyn

Valerie Jarrett announced the other day that “we’re going to speak truth to power.”

Who’s Valerie Jarrett? She’s “Senior Advisor” to the president of the United States — i.e., the leader of the most powerful nation on the face of the earth. You would think the most powerful man in the most powerful nation would find a hard job finding anyone on the planet to “speak truth to power” to. But I suppose if you’re as eager to do so as his Senior Advisor, there’s always somebody out there: The Supreme Leader of Iran. The Prime Minister of Belgium. The Deputy Tourism Minister of the Solomon Islands. But no. The Senior Advisor has selected targets closer to home: “I think that what the administration has said very clearly is that we’re going to speak truth to power. When we saw all of the distortions in the course of the summer, when people were coming down to town-hall meetings and putting up signs that were scaring seniors to death. . . . ”

Ah, right. People “putting up signs.” Can’t have that, can we? The most powerful woman in the inner circle of the most powerful man on earth has decided to speak truth to powerful people standing in the street with handwritten placards saying “THIS GRAN’MA ISN’T SHOVEL READY.” Was it only a week ago that I wrote about this administration’s peculiar need for domestic enemies?

Oh I think she just mis-spoke. What she really meant to say was that if Fox keeps speaking the truth, *we* are going to *speak* **power** to them...

Frankly the problem is that the Obamistas are at a total loss for words.

They only have one set of ideographs and it never occurred to them that they might eventually have to govern.

They still have no idea what governing is about, nor do they have the capabilities needed for that task. Obama still has numerous appointive positions unfilled ~ and it's not like Bill Clinton where so many of his prospective appointees were dope addicts or criminals ~ with Obama the problem is that capable people simply don't want jobs in this regime.

I've been asking since last Fall when vetting began why it is Obama can't attract talented people. The fact that you have to face ignorant thugs like Valerie Jerrett or Rahm Emanuel may well be a major part of the reasons.

Best bet with Obama is that he simply ask for resignation letters from all his appointees, clear the White House and old Executive Office Building, find his Samurai sword, and do what is necessary to allow other, more capable people start over!

Obviously they let it slip that they see Fox as “The Power”, and I think Fox ought to jump all over that in their advertising. “Acknowledged by the Obama administration as “The Power”.

Reminds me of the old Sprint ad where the exec says joining the plan is his way of sticking it to the man, to which his assistant replies, “But sir, you are The Man.” He replies, “I know” The assistant asks “So you’re sticking it to yourself?”

Of course, the real truth here is that conservatives believe that famous saying most famously not said by Voltaire, “I may disagree with what you say, but I will fight to the death for your right to say it.”

The left believes you should shut up if they disagree with you and if they have the power to bring it about they will.

Doesn’t take much courage to stick it to the man if you are the man.

“the most powerful nation on the face of the earth”

Yeah, well, it was until Barack let the air out of the tires and sold the gas. I think his friends swiped the battery, too.

This brings me a glimmer of hope. Remember Alyinski: power is what they think you have. The administration is actually afraid of US ! They are few in number, and their reigme is rapidily falling apart. THe tide just might be on the turn.

Waiddaminute...Uh, Val? Aren’t you guys the “power” now?

Using that worn out militant agitator phrase when y’all are in the catbird seat now sounds really stupid to me.

Too honorable !

Exactly what I was remembering when I heard that quote.

Besides...didn't John ("I Served in Vietnam") Kerry use the clumsy, moronic phrase about "speaking truth to power?"

Why, yes...I believe he did.

Unfortunately, it was stupid when Kerry used it.

And frankly, it doesn't work any better for the current pack of clowns, either. Leaving aside the "sticking it to themselves" angle, I'm surprised they would even bother to trot that idiotic "truth to power" line out, anyway, just because it's so irretrievably lame.

Val Jerrette is, as it turns out, really stupid.

The whole crowd of Leftwingtards put in charge of the government is stupid beyond belief.

This is when an Eric Rohm organizes the unemployed youth and begins setting government policy in the streets.

People like Jarrett are so stuck in the rhetoric or the 60’s they just don’t know how ridiculous they sound when they actually have an audience that isn’t made up of a bunch of leftist sycophants.

I think that “flunkie” would be a good term to start to describe those people within the Obama circle of power. They all seemed to have missed or completely misunderstood any lessens in history or protocol or American spirit and tradition. They are the true strawmen of the administration....if they only had a brain...and as the Wizard of Oz explains that there are lots of men with degrees and education who are fools. “Flunkie” would be so demeaning to those around Obama who think that they are brilliant and are just grunts.

Beyond some stupid bloated hippie saying; what exactly does “Speak truth to power” mean anyway? Seriously, it’s just pure nonsense to me.

During most of the campaign, particularly Michelle, who frequently mentioned royalties, but really, both of them gave me the impression that they 'knew' they didn't have a chance at being him being elected, but that campaiging was excellent for book sales, and that was the actual reason why BHO ran for president - simply to increase book sales, not to win...

I think you're right that they're all at a loss for words, and perhaps it's because the idea of winning never seriously occurred to them, until way too late.

Like you, I worried about the huge number of unemployed young men, and I fear that they will join gangs in order to secure some type of livlihood.

“Speaking Truth to Power” must be code-speak by the Liberals since it has no meaning to real English speakers.

--agree--I always thought it was a stupid comment--reminds me of a line in one of Nixon's books about a "meaningless phrase that fits a bumper sticker or a t-shirt"--

--IIRC, he used "Make Love, Not War" as an example---
