Fox News Poll: Americans Take Congress to Task (64% want to fire them all)
Fox News ^ | October 30, 2009 | Ernie Paicopolos

Posted on 10/30/2009 2:42:11 PM PDT by Zakeet

If members of Congress were up for a job review right now — instead of a year from now — the ranks of the unemployed would swell to an even higher level. Americans place a lot of the blame for conditions in the country on Congress and, because of that, about two-thirds want to “throw them out” of office, according to the latest FOX News poll.

The national telephone poll was conducted for FOX News by Opinion Dynamics Corp. among 900 registered voters from October 27 to October 28, 2009. The poll has a 3-point error margin.

A sizable majority of Americans (64 percent) say the country would be better off by throwing “most” members of Congress out, a jump of 19 percentage points from two years ago. Only about one in five Americans (19 percent) feels the average representative deserves to be re-elected, a seven-point drop from October of 2007. Even half of Democrats take the view that we need to clean house and start over with new people.

When moving from an institutional perspective to a more personal view, a slim 51 percent majority of Americans want to keep their own member of Congress in office.

This phenomenon of “hating” Congress but “loving” one’s congressman is an established trend in politics. However, even in this setting, more people opt for getting rid of their representative today (35 percent) than did two years ago (29 percent).

When assessing blame for current conditions in the country, Americans are far more likely to blame Congress (64 percent) than the president (10 percent), and almost one in five (18 percent) volunteers that both the president and Congress are equally to blame.

This is not true of the people in Oklahoma. We love our two Senators Coburn and Inhofe and my Congressman Tom Cole is getting a huge thumbs up after endorsing Hoffman earlier this week.

People SHOULD hold Congress more responsible for everything than the President. Heck, Congress can do virtually everything on its own by overriding the President. Also, only Congress can create and pass a bill. All the President can do is sign or not, with the Congress going over his head if so desired.

Congress has ALWAYS been the problem. It’s just that we have a President that insists on helping Congress screw things up.

Rats and RINOs. Fire them all. If the parties insist on giving your Rats or RINOs to choose from, find anotehr candidate and elect him/her.

Unfortunately, most House races are rigged. The districts are drawn so the Member can’t be thrown out.

With the issues this congress is voting on it will be crystal clear to voters if they should be for or against their incumbents. It isn't going to be an election where one minor little vote here or there can be washed away by another slick campaign.

IMHO, firing them all is sufficient if done properly.

Congress is only dangerous because the worst members are in the safest seats. The only thing that can fix that is term limits.

I spent 22 years in the military and served in Iraq at the begining of the war. I am retired military and like the millions of elderly I will not be getting a COLA increase in 2010. I am sure this unethical and CRIMINAL congress will authorize themselves one.

I feel these idiots are underestimating American anger. “poke and prod the tiger in the cage” There will be a breaking point that will make thier heads spin if they continue I’m sure. The public believe in the rule of law and will play this out with a measure of civility but the house is going to be set on fire and the exits will be far and few between.

You can’t do anything about “other people”. All you can do is vote AGAINST your incumbent congressman.

If you can’t do that one little thing, you deserve everything that Congress drops on you.

I agree with you. My point being that when people bitch about congress, they mean everyone but their own. That’s evident by the fact that a large majority of them get reelected.

I am generally satisfied with my own congressman, Aaron Schock, he made a stupid vote for an unconstitutional measure, concerning ex post facto, taxing bonuses for bailed out bankers but he’s new and I’ll give him strike one.

I vote against my rat senators every chance I get.

Yeah, the problem here folks is everyone says vote them out, but my guy in my state or my district is ok.

I only hope voters grow a spine too. Vote the jacka$$’s out.

They live a life of royalty and do not have the constituents interest at heart. It’s a luxurious lifestyle they have. Wise up people. Clean the slate.

Agreed, “Congress has ALWAYS been the problem.”

An undisputable fact, and designed as such to rely upon citizen politicians; except long-term professional politicians and political class were not part of the original plan. Over time with a complicit media, “friends of government” and Government Education, all playing “3 Card Monty” on the citizenry, have pushed America as a nation into an un-Constitutional abyss of Feudalism. Two examples to prove the point: how is it that Congress makes separate laws for themselves and “Friends of Government” which are never challenged, second, how has the public come to believe the I.R.S. is a separate branch of government and not Congress’ responsibility (or even accountable for its actions)?

Steve King is my congressman. I had someone send me a piece by a group who wants us gullible Americans to throw out ALL members of congress.

I e-mailed them and told them my congressman is Steve King and I have no intention of voting for a RAT to replace him.

I got back a snotty message asking if I'm proud what Congressman King, and others have done to this country.

My answer is, "you betcha."

Please explain how this would accomplish anything. You do realize you would have to depend on the exact same people that now make up the GOP, don't you? Or do you have some magical way to come up with a whole new bunch of conservative voters?
