Cambridge University Allows Muslim Students To Wear Burkhas Under Their Mortar Boards At Graduation

By DAILY MAIL REPORTER 30th October 2009

Strict dress code: How a Muslim Cambridge University student might look at their graduation ceremony. Cambridge University is to allow female Muslim students to wear burkhas under their mortar boards at graduation ceremonies, it emerged today. The university has a strict dress code for the prestigious events at the city's Senate House, to which all students must adhere in order to graduate.

The university website warns students that the code 'is strictly enforced at ceremonies, and if you do not observe it, you may not be permitted to graduate on a particular occasion.' The stringent laws were first challenged in 2005 when Scottish students demanded to be allowed to wear kilts.

Cambridge University issued a clarification to say certain items of national dress, military uniform and religious garments - including the burkha - were allowed. Today a spokesman confirmed burkhas could be worn under mortar boards but no one had requested permission yet.

He said: 'Religious dress and cultural observations are allowed at graduation. 'If a student has a religious or cultural obligation to wear something then we absolutely respect that.

'Military uniform is allowed at the discretion of the college. This was clarified in 2005 when the ban on wearing kilts was lifted. 'We would allow the wearing of the full burkha if that's what the student wore day-to-day.

That is just repulsive. I get a visceral punch-to-the-stomach feeling everytime I see them in public.

I always try to make a scene when I see them in a store or public place. Although I never, EVER address them directly, I make loud comments to the effect of "We better get outa here, I get a bad feeling all of a sudden", or "OMG, did you see that? WTF?", or "am I still in Texas? What happened to my state?"

It's a fun, innocent passive aggressive game, and someday I will get my @ss kicked for it.

Academic regalia is derived from medieval clerical dress . . . Christian clerical dress.

For most college students, it's the headdress they wear at graduation:

For Muslim students, a "mortar board" might be what they use to stabilize their rocket launchers.
