RICHMOND, CALIF. -- Security was unusually tight Thursday as four young men made their first court appearance in last weekend's gang rape at Richmond High School, a crime that brought anguish to students and leaders in the city and sent shock waves throughout the nation.

Later Thursday, police arrested a sixth suspect in the case. A fifth suspect was arrested earlier but has not been charged.

Three defendants, all of them juveniles charged as adults, were wearing bulletproof vests when they were led into Superior Court by a corps of Contra Costa County sheriff's deputies. The three - one of whom had a black eye - looked morose and said nothing as relatives wept in the gallery.

Peter's cousin Monquasha Peter of Richmond burst into tears upon seeing him, and her mother, Monica Peter, dabbed her eyes.

Peter's family accused prosecutors of having racial motives. Peter is the only black suspect named in the case. Smith is white, and the other suspects are Latino.

Peter "didn't have anything to do with this," his aunt said. "He said everyone was just walking past, and he just kept moving when he saw something was going on.

"He's a good kid with no criminal record who likes to play soccer," she said. "I am going to prove his innocence.

"My nephew is scared," she added. "He is the one they've arrested who is black, and if they give my nephew a life sentence, I will sue Richmond. There is no way in hell I will see my nephew blamed in this because he is black."

Wonder how long before Sharpton comes in (as he did in the Dunbar, Fla. gang rape case)?

Well, if he REALLY does like playing soccer, that should hold up in court as proof of his innocence.

Hofstra (black), Duke (white) aside, there is little reason to doubt guilty in this case. The Duke and Hofstra case involved college students in the higher socio-economic strata while this incident involves low-life thugs in an urban wasteland sewer where "gangsta" activity runs rampant.

I wonder if the authorities have any of those cell phone/camera pictures. Pictures would help with convictions as well as help counter any potential lawsuits.

One big difference is that the victim in this case was found unconscious with obvious signs of an attack. The other two cases you mention involved the supposed victim calling the police and telling a tale of which there was no evidence.

If arresting one black is evidence for racism, what does that say about the treatment of Hispanics of whom four or five have been arrested? Furthermore, if this is racism against blacks, why did they arrest only one black? Why not round up a bunch? One white guy is also in the dock over this incident, too. What's the explanation for that?

The "victim" and entitlement mentality has now completely permeated the black community. It's totally messed up. Thanks Al and Jesse.

On March 11, 2007, Al Sharpton held a press conference to highlight what he said was unequal treatment of four suspected rapists in a high-profile crime in the Dunbar Village Housing Projects in West Palm Beach, Florida. The suspects, who were young black men, were arrested for allegedly raping and beating a black Haitian woman at gunpoint. The crime also involved forcing the woman to perform oral sex on her 12-year-old son.

At his press conference Sharpton said that any violent act toward a woman is inexcusable but he felt that the accused youths were being treated unfairly because they were black....

I have a friend who is now retired from the Boston, MA police force. He was telling me some years back that during a drug bust a black drug dealing youth was screaming that he was only being arrested because he was black.

My buddy said - and I’m paraphrasing.....
“Why yes - I am arresting you because you are black. Didn’t you know that it is illegal to be black now? I’ll overlook the handgun and drugs we found in your pockets.”

He escorted her to the hangout spot, on the north edge of campus, where she drank a large amount of brandy quickly.

After she collapsed, several people beat her, robbed her of her belongings, stripped her naked and repeatedly sexually assaulted her. The attack continued until about midnight, when word reached a group of students and former students watching a movie at a house a few blocks away.

They phoned 911, and officers arrived to break up the attack. They arrested Ortega, who was out of custody on a pending misdemeanor weapons and vandalism case, running from the crime scene. Detectives later identified and arrested the other suspects. Peter turned himself in after police raided the home he shares with his grandmother, family members said.
