TEGUCIGALPA (Reuters) – Honduras' de facto government has accepted a U.S.-driven deal that opens the door for the return to power of President Manuel Zelaya, toppled in a military coup four months ago.

The breakthrough late on Thursday followed renewed pressure from senior U.S. officials who traveled to Honduras this week for a last-ditch effort to end a crisis that has given U.S. President Barack Obama a foreign policy headache.

"It is a triumph for Honduran democracy," the leftist Zelaya said after the rival sides agreed to a deal that he said should see him restored to office in the coming days.

Less than a month in power with a gun in his ear.

Fact is, think I’ll wait to see if this deal turns out like all the rest.

Well they claim they aren’t happy with Daniel Ortega but I’m not seeing any sanctions or pressure being applied.

They murdered the man’s nephew. And we help put the murderer back in power.

Our government is evil. We’re being ruled by monsters.

I think it is a way to get him out of the embassy and cap him.

Otherwise this marks the first time the US gov has supported and accomplished a communist coup. Intentionally anyway.

One more reason treason should get the rope. No one can put them back in power.

Who was murdered? - The constitutional President’s nephew, who had recently been appointed to replace a communist mayor.

Who Murdered him? - Unknown, the left is insinuating “drug related”. I expect the capitol police would have classified it a suicide, like Vince Foster’s.

Thank you. - NP. Sad days.

“Otherwise this marks the first time the US gov has supported and accomplished a communist coup. Intentionally anyway.”

A case can be made that the Russian Bolsheviks were preserved by American threats to the European powers not to intervene. Some would argue that the U.S. betrayed the Chinese Nationalists and supported Agrarian reformer Mao into power.

In the future, it may be seen that the entire international Communist movement was a U.S. State Department project from the get-go.

Rog that! Bloodless coups leave the door wide open to redux. Chavez is a prime example.

From what I read, the agreement only says that the congress will re-address his removal, based on court rulings. But the court ruled he was guilty, and the congress already removed him once, so I don’t see how it is a foregone conclusion the congress would reverse itself and re-instate him.

Ditto that. History has shown that these tin-pot rabble rousing wannabe tyrants are better put down than exiled. Lenin, Mussolini, Hitler, all could have been avoided if someone had treated treason as a capital crime.
