Soros to Launch an Effort to Get Free-Market Ideas Out of Economics
NRO's The Corner ^ | Thursday, October 29, 2009 | Veronique de Rugy

Posted on 10/30/2009 5:03:03 AM PDT by 1rudeboy

This is quite amazing:

Now financier George Soros is announcing a $50 million effort to speed things along. This week Soros is gathering some of the leading practitioners of the market-skeptic school, who were marginalized during the era of "free-market fundamentalism," among them Nobelists Joseph Stiglitz, George Akerlof, Michael Spence, and Sir James Mirrlees.

The basic idea behind the effort is that economists and their free-market zeal have dominated not only the past 20 years but are also dominating the current debate over the response to the financial crisis and the health-care debate.

As government spending grows even faster than it did the last eight years, and as the United States becomes more and more like Europe, I wish free-market economists were winning this fight.

Unfortunately, we see the exact opposite. Free-market economists continue to lose, as they have in the past. None of the proper lessons from the crisis have been learned. For instance, the unhealthy marriages between government and the financial industry and government and the housing industry are as strong as ever, and the government is taking over a major part of the economy. The idea that deregulation is responsible for this crisis is a myth, but it's an enduring one.

A better use of those billions would be research showing how the government's intervention in everything is the source of the problem. I think Soros's fortune would be better used trying to get the government out of the market.

For a wonderful plea to get the "crony" out of "crony capitalism," I suggest you read the testimony Russ Roberts gave yesterday before Congress on executive compensation here.

Yep — gotta stamp out them pesky, subversive, free-market ideas...

I’m no longer a free-market capitalist. George Soros has convinced me that collectivism is the only way. And as a first, good-faith gesture I would like to personally redistribute George Soros’ wealth.

Where to begin is right.

This hypocrite, why is it that when people like him get to the top they seem to do everything they can to deny it to others? OR tear apart the system that made them able to be successful in the first place?

I would like you to begin with my German neighbor who just yesterday assured me that Barack Obama was a wonderful president because he was backed by George Soros. Maybe you can talk some sense to him.

As you say, where to begin? The level of ignorance both here and back home of the extent of the truly malevolent influence of George Soros is shocking. David Horwitz has an excellent website on the interconnectedness of the far left working down George Soros.

Soros is reputed to have fingered Hungarian Jews for the SS in WWII. About 40 of my relatives were killed by the Nazis in Hungary during WWII, including my 90 year old great grandfather. I may have a blood debt to pay Soros that neither of us knows about. I’d consider it settled if his wealth was redistributed, and some of it redistributed my way.

This, of course, is not because Soros believes communism is a better system for human beings.

Soros knows full-well that communist systems cannot deliver optimum performance because there is no means of establishing valid "goal posts" and measuring performance.

Only in systems where ideas and components COMPETE with each other and the best one becomes dominant is optimization of performance achievable.

Communism is like a football team that only practices and never actually competes. Its insularity leads to self deception...not to improvement in performance. Also, why improve if there's no advantage...why improve if a competing team doesn't demonstrate your weaknesses.

Communism is a system of illusions and delusions. The leaders can brag about their achievements because there is no one who can demonstrate or tell the truth (no competing teams or freedom of the press). And followers believe, because of the same lack of truth, that they are thriving (and if they don't believe they are thriving, they are punished for their heresy)

Soros love of systems that allocate resources based on politics, patronage, and favoritism extends from his understanding that such systems can be "gamed" or "rigged". He can manipulate such systems without having to be the best...but by only bribing those in charge.

Soros isn't a true believer in communism (however foolish even the true believers are), he is just a master manipulator. He bought an American Presidency...and now he wants to see a return on his investment!

Additionally, he must realize that if he can't turn America into a communist/totalitarian state, his shenanigans will be uncovered by a future administration when systems of free competitive markets and ideas are once again in ascendancy.

I think that's an idea well worth considering.

The free market never actually dies when communism is forced upon a culture, it only goes underground. I would rather live free in the underground than be a minion of Soros and Obama inside the grid.

Hmmm...that sounds like good fodder for a novel or series of short stories.;-)

I have yet to figure that out (until I just looked it up).

16.) "Why do your write your name with a comma in the middle? (James Wesley, Rawles). I've only seen commas before when people write their names backwards, with their surname first, like on rosters."

I use the comma to make a distinction between my Christian name, and my family name. My Christian name (James Wesley) is my property. My family name (Rawles) is the common property of all those that share the Rawles bloodline, and our wives.

OK, so he's a little "off" - but he has good information.

Jeremy Siegel likely would argue that George Soros is not letting a crisis go to waste.

Financial journalist and best-selling author Roger Lowenstein didn't mince words in a piece for the Washington Post this summer: "The upside of the current Great Recession is that it could drive a stake through the heart of the academic nostrum known as the efficient-market hypothesis." In a similar vein, the highly respected money manager and financial analyst Jeremy Grantham wrote in his quarterly letter last January: "The incredibly inaccurate efficient market theory [caused] a lethally dangerous combination of asset bubbles, lax controls, pernicious incentives and wickedly complicated instruments [that] led to our current plight."

But is the Efficient Market Hypothesis (EMH) really responsible for the current crisis? The answer is no. The EMH, originally put forth by Eugene Fama of the University of Chicago in the 1960s, states that the prices of securities reflect all known information that impacts their value. The hypothesis does not claim that the market price is always right. On the contrary, it implies that the prices in the market are mostly wrong, but at any given moment it is not at all easy to say whether they are too high or too low. The fact that the best and brightest on Wall Street made so many mistakes shows how hard it is to beat the market.

This does not mean the EMH can be used as an excuse by the CEOs of the failed financial firms or by the regulators who did not see the risks that subprime mortgage-backed securities posed to the financial stability of the economy. Regulators wrongly believed that financial firms were offsetting their credit risks, while the banks and credit rating agencies were fooled by faulty models that underestimated the risk in real estate.

Efficient Market Theory and the Crisis, October 27, 2009.

There is an interesting relative difference between the anti-Semitism in Bavaria which is like a week undertow in the surf, you can feel it but it is not terribly strong, compared to anti-African-American feelings which are virtually nonexistent, indeed, blacks in Germany are thought to be exotic and very attractive and sexual.

The anti-Semitism is in the bloodstream like a mild-and I stress the word "mild"- herpes infection which is normally in remission but no doubt capable of erupting at sometime or other. The feelings on behalf of African-Americans, or I suppose I should say more generally Africans, comes from exposure to American films and television which is a regular staple here and which invariably depicts African-Americans as always well-intentioned and sympathetic. The rock 'n roll celebrities, although bizarre, are given a pass because they are exotic.

It is in this context that Barack Obama is so favorably viewed here in Europe. Many of the Germans I speak to are not aware that George Soros is Jewish. This is understandable once you realize that there is no alternative media, no Free Republic, no talk radio, there is only CNN replicated ad infinitum.

To understand why George Bush was so roundly detested and Barack Obama and Bill Clinton so universally admired, one need only look at the world through the prism of CNN and one can only marvel that Germans somehow maintain real fondness for America.

We hear a lot of comparisons these days of 2009 and 1930, and it goes beyond the just market crash/unemployment to the entire leftward political shift. Something these comparisons seem to miss is the fact that this time we really should know better.

Interesting. I understand what you mean when you speak of the anti-semitism existing just below the surface. My father was born and lived in Germany until he was 18 years old. He wasa kid during the war and Hitler's time. He remember's American troops rolling through his burg and handing out treats.

To the point, he worked for a Jewish man, his best friend was Jewish. However, when he had too much to drink, the Jewish slurs would flow.

nce you realize that there is no alternative media, no Free Republic, no talk radio, there is only CNN replicated ad infinitum.

Also, the German psyche is very, very seeped in conformity and they have a strong dislike of change. As you must experience, it is very common to hear when questioning why some dumbass, convoluted system is in place, to be told, "Because, that is the way it has always been done"

I had a laundry list of things that they would tell be were verboten: You are not supposed to make noise on Sunday, no washing your car in your driveway, certain foods and activites only at certain times of the year and then like lemmings they all engage in that activity...It's a very peculiar mindset. IMHO

I wish we'd stop with that stuff, because it is really damaging to Israel.

Jewish? Culturally, maybe, ethnically, no (descended from Japheth), religiously, definitely not, indeed he may be the opposite, a Sabbatean satanist.

George Soros is an enemy of the USA as much as Osama bin Laden is. Both want to destroy us and only their methods differ. Soros uses the dollar - by betting against it - while Binny baby uses bullets and bombs. Yet Barry has had him over to the WH for 'tea and crumpets' FOUR TIMES.

So when do 'High Crimes and Misdemeanors' kick in for impeachment? On the six or seventh 'visit'.

Someone once said that when Communists promise equality, they are telling the total truth. The only problem is, who wants to be equally miserable?

However, I have a question on this statement:

Only in systems where ideas and components COMPETE with each other and the best one becomes dominant is optimization of performance achievable.

If that is so, how do you explain VHS over Betamax? Or Ethernet beating Token Ring, or Windows trumping Unix? Or even Liberalism being in power rather than Conservatism?
