One of President Barack Obamas key political advisers has become the central strategist in New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzines bruising campaign for re-election, a race the White House desperately wants to win to avert the consequences for its own agenda of a Republican winning in a traditionally Democratic state.
The White House was so concerned about Corzine's chances during the summer that Corzine's aides feared the first-term governor was being pressured to step aside for a stronger candidate. Those fears turned out to be groundless, but were part of the reason Corzine hired Joel Benenson, who has helped impose discipline on a struggling campaign and crystallize Corzines aggressive attacks on the character of his Republican opponent, former U.S. Attorney Chris Christie.
The race is seen as extremely close, complicated by the presence of a third candidate, Chris Daggett. For the White House, its a crucial symbolic prize. With Democrat Creigh Deeds running far behind his Republican rival in Virginia, the New Jersey race once believed to be hopeless for Corzine is now seen as the White Houses best bet to make the 2009 election cycle a political wash and to calm the nerves of congressional Democrats approaching the crucial 2010 midterm elections.

I wonder who is paying Daggert?
Soros and axelrod
We lived in NJ for six and a half years. It was corrupt when we left there, 22 years ago, and it seems to have gone nowhere but downhill since.
HA...I had a boss who once worked for Frito Lay in New Jersey....in the early 1980’s he called it...”The Armpit of America.”
The list, ping
Is Corzine ahead right now or is it too close to call based on the latest polls?
It is New Jersey we are talking about here so I am not so sure the actual votes will make much difference in the official outcome. New Jersey probably doesn’t even need the help of the ACORN election experts to get the required results.
Hah! Sounds like the turkey and his handlers are scared.
This gamble is about as risky as Bambi’s Olympics gamble, you would think Bambi an Co. would be gun shy by now...
According to Rasmussen - Christie 46-43 over Corzine ... within margin of error.
I’ll refrain from obvious jokes on taking advice from this W.H.’s group fo advisors but stick to the following statement. I’ll believe the Republican wins when I see it. N.J. votes play games every election. Fool’s gold with them. I do want the guy to win, but only because it would hurt Obama’s objectives. Democrat’s on the hill are already skittish. Lose a solid blue state and watch how they react.
What is the margin of ACORN?
I don’t think a Republican win in NJ is possible. The Republicans may have more voters, but the political machinery is solidly dim, and stuffing ballot boxes is an old tradition there.
Yeah, once you got North of the Raritan River, near NYC, that's about right.
We lived in Freehold Township, which was smack dab in the middle between Asbury Park and Trenton. Colt's Neck, horse country, was about 10 minutes East of us, and farmland was 10 minutes West. It was actually a pretty area. And once you get North and West of Parsippany, out toward Flemington, the hills, and the Delaware Gap, it's just beautiful.
