In an interview published today, The Atlantic describes Gore Vidal as “a sharp provocateur, as irascible and irreverent as ever.”
I’m assuming that’s some kind of internal Atlantic-code for "twisted old has-been degenerate desperate for attention":
ATLANTIC: In September, director Roman Polanski was arrested in Switzerland for leaving the U.S. in 1978 before being sentenced to prison for raping a 13-year-old girl at Jack Nicholson’s house in Hollywood. During the time of the original incident, you were working in the industry, and you and Polanski had a common friend in theater critic and producer Kenneth Tynan. So what’s your take on Polanski, this many years later?

It seems to be undisputed that this girl was given Champagne and a strong medication before she was involved in what was at best termed non-consensual sex not limited to but including sodomy. The girl was not thought to have had sex before this incident.
I realize it’s open to some conjecture exactly what did take place. It is true that Polanski did plead guilty to statutory rape.
Despite this, Gore Vidal calls the young woman a whore, then states this is actually an unfair attack on a Jewish man.
As a defender of Jews and Israel, Vidal’s comment are unacceptable. If Rush Limbaugh had made these comments, he’s have been castrated before dawn tomorrow.
Vidal may actually deserve it. I’ve seldom seen a more insensitive comment about a virgin girl who was allegedly subjected to non-consensual rape involving sodomy.
Evidently the Vidal Court jury of one verdict came in, and she’s the guilty party. As such, it looks like the Muslim people who execute their women after they are raped, run in the same direction as Gore Vidal.

It would have been highly unusual for a girl to not be a virgin at age 13, at that time. Who knows what was going on in her life, or in her family, to cause her to be having sex at 13.
