NRA Sues Seattle Over Illegal Gun Ban

Wednesday, October 28, 2009

Fairfax, Va. - Today, the National Rifle Association filed a complaint in the Superior Court of Washington State against the City of Seattle, asking the court to enjoin and declare invalid a recently enacted parks and recreation administrative policy that prohibits firearms in parks, community centers and other city-owned buildings. Other plaintiffs in the case include state correctional officers and private citizens.

“NRA members are outraged that the City of Seattle has ignored and defied state law and an opinion of Washington Attorney General Rob McKenna,” said Chris W. Cox, NRA’s chief lobbyist. “The NRA will continue to fight this senseless infringement on the rights of law-abiding Seattle gun owners.”

The city is in violation of Washington’s preemption statute, which forbids localities from enacting this type of ban. In October 2008, Attorney General Rob McKenna issued an opinion, which put the City of Seattle and Mayor Nickels on further notice that Washington cities may not enact local laws prohibiting possession of firearms on city property or in city-owned facilities.

“Law-abiding Seattle gun owners should be allowed to protect themselves when they go about their business, even in a park or other recreation facility,” concluded Cox. “This illegal ban even prohibits the most law-abiding citizens with Right-to-Carry permits from possession in ‘prohibited’ areas.”

The Second Amendment Foundation, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms and the Washington Arms Collectors, Inc. are working in conjunction with the NRA and are co-plantiffs in the lawsuit against the city.

Established in 1871, the National Rifle Association is America’s oldest civil rights and sportsmen's group. Four million members strong, NRA continues its mission to uphold Second Amendment rights and to advocate enforcement of existing laws against violent offenders to reduce crime. The Association remains the nation's leader in firearm education and training for law-abiding gun owners, law enforcement and the military.

prohibits firearms in parks, community centers and other city-owned buildings.

It won't be long till city owned or controlled roads and sidewalks are also included in public area bans like these.

Sideways way of getting a city wide gun ban while still "allowing" people to have them on their own private property.

These unconstitutional measures must be stopped.

It is interesting that it takes a national organization such as the NRA to come in and make Seattle obey a state law. Washington definitely needs its version of the Virginia Citizens Defense League, a very active group which regularly forces localties to conform to Virginia’s state pre-exemption gun laws in addition to its other activities which protect Virginians’ gun rights.

It is just the Peoples Republic of Seattle doing what Seattle does best. They try soooo hard to make a better city, but, have not idea what it takes to get it done. They should be doing the opposite if they want less violence and safer streets. It is an incredibly naive city.

I love many things about Seattle, but Seattleites are kind of wacky.

1. They reelect Rep. Jim McDermott (how embarrassing). The only thing positive i can say about McDermott is that he is smarter the Sen. Patty Murray.
2. They suck at driving (even in the rain)
3. They live in a liberal bubble and recoil whenever their beliefs are challenged. It is clear when you hear their arguments that they are not challenged very often.
4. They dont really walk the talk. They vote conservatively when it affects their pocket book of lifestyle.Maybe this is a universal liberal behavior.
5. They are well educated but not smart.
6. They are self-congratulatory liberals through and through. It is all about feeling good about themselves and the perception that they have a higher consciousness.
7. The diversity of external appearance is revered. However, ideological diversity is frowned upon and barely tolerated. I am a true minority in this city. Where are my special rights?
8. and on and on and on...

Seattle doesn’t have a monopoly on idiot mayors. Chicago’s mayor is giving him some competition.

The atty. general warned the mayor last year that his (then) proposed gun ban would be illegal. The mayor ignored him.

“The atty. general warned the mayor last year that his (then) proposed gun ban would be illegal. The mayor ignored him.”

So send the state police and arrest him. Or accept the white feather.
