Family Upset Man Accused In Girl's Death Offered Plea

NEW CASTLE, Ind. -- The family of a 3-year-old Henry County girl who police said was beaten to death by her mother's boyfriend is upset the man is now being offered a plea deal.

Jeremiah Hoots, 31, was originally charged with felony battery in the December 2007 death of the daughter of his then-girlfriend, Krystal Pollitt, 3-year-old Kaitlynne Jennings.

He could have faced 50 years in prison if convicted on that charge. But earlier this week, Hoots was offered a plea deal of 12 years in prison with six suspended, two years suspended on probation and one of those years on home detention, 6News' Derrik Thomas reported.

"Until after the hearing, I don't want to make any comment about the plea agreement and how it was arrived at," said Henry County Deputy Prosecutor Jim Millikan in a statement.

Hoots told investigators that the girl was hurt while wresting with her brothers, but an autopsy showed that she suffered two skull fractures, bleeding in the brain and a broken neck.

The girl's mother, who was charged with felony neglect of a dependent in the death, and her family want the judge to reject the plea deal.

"I was appalled. I never, ever thought he would be offered a plea bargain like that," Pollitt said.

Such a beautiful little girl. Three years in prison and one on home detention for murdering this little girl, there needs to be more than one neck stretched for this miscarriage of justice.

Another case of Lazy, Indiana prosecutors who want the easy conviction.

Here in Northern Indiana, we had an admitted child molester strike a plea that gives him no jail time, 1 year house arrest, 3 years probation AND HE DOES NOT HAVE TO REGISTER ON THE SEX OFFENDER REGISTRY.

The judge "chastized" the prosecutor for the deal but accepted anyway.

TOTAL BS!!

Meanwhile we have several hundred people in the County Jail for various, pot related charges and DUI.

In this supposed “Land of Law”, where is the justice for this poor child?

That’s right, and what do we do when we can no longer trust the government to enact justice? There are only a few places to turn.

Either the prosecutor has screwed up the case, or the county/state is having money troubles and forcing him to take pleas where he otherwise would not. Either way, this is a horrendous miscarriage of justice.

I do take comfort in the fact that we will all face God one day, and those not under God's mercy through Jesus Christ will face perfect justice. Justice will win out perfectly in the end.

I imagine it is tough for those who loved this little darling to take comfort in such thoughts.

The two worst words in the world (statistically) for a child are “mother's boyfriend”.

I call it ‘the Lion principle’. Think about what a male Lion does first thing when he kicks out the old male.

Some people are just not human enough to realize that this is a child that needs love and understanding, and instead they see the child as physical proof that their lover was once with another man (duh). Idiotic.

Step mothers or girlfriends aren’t exactly known for their kindness either.

A parent’s first responsibility is to their children.

The sooner he’s released, the sooner “alternative” forms of justice can be dispensed.

It’s worse than that. In Indiana, an inmate receives 2 days of credit against a sentence for each day actually served. This guy would serve 1 1/2 years for murdering a little girl.
