Breaded and fried okra is the one thing I miss most from my stint in Alabama. Um, yah, I’ll have the ribs with a side of okra, and, um, can I have another side of okra as my second vegetable?

However, I’m still wanted in Kentucky and Tennessee on grit violations (son, when you order breakfast, grits comes with it - You ain’t from around here, are ya?).

Whoa!

Grits question:

Are you supposed to eat something on grits..like bacon gravy? Or are they supposed to be an actual stand-alone side dish enjoyed for their..."flavor"?

My mama used to make potato pancakes all the time when I was a kid. Crispy, fluffy.... oh yes. I think I decided what we're having for dinner tonight, thank you kindly. I need to thaw the obligatory pound or two of bacon. Some homemade biscuits would be in order, too. (I'd make country gravy, but my arteries would complain, so maybe we'll just go for some clover honey. :o)

Um, I think it's race thread ettiquite to ping Pete-R-Bilt if bacon is mentioned, yes?

I'm not sure of the criminal code in the southern states regarding grits, since I've never hung around long enough to be tried (or hanged). Grit violations are felonies in many states, though I've yet to be extradited.

Personally, it's sorta like: do you like gravy on your fries? Around here, that's a shooting offense. I've seen butter on grits, cheese in grits, stand alone stare you down grits, and ya know... I've been advised by my attorney to direct you to this link and say nothing more. Sorry.

Being from the Tarheel state, I have some familiarity with grits. In our house, they were a staple. But, they were nothing exotic, or special. there are just grits.

But, grits have a unique talent of combining flavors. My favorite combination is crisp fried bacon crumbled onto a couple of over-easy fried eggs (preferably fried in the bacon grease), a sprinkling of shredded cheddar, and a generous pile of grits on top.

Take your fork and slice through it all, then mix until nice. Grab your fork, and a biscuit, and ...

You need a big glass of milk to wash it all down. Coffee is also required.

That's what I thought. My southern heritage portion of the family never served grits...just potatoes or biscuits. I figured grits was another starch food like that.

I like em all, but would probably never eat any of them without at least butter, salt and pepper on grits and fried taters.

Biscuits and fried chicken gravy is pretty hard to beat.

I make grits for my kids in the winter. I never said I was seeking any parenting award. If they’re good, I give them cheese too (glorious cheese).

Fried chickem gravY? Isn't that where you fry chicken, then throw some flour and salt into the grease to thicken it?

Grits are a wonderful treat to the palate. You can blend them into any type dish. One of my favorites came from a former White House chef:

Shrimp and Cheddar Grits

Back when the race cars were "production" cars (500 of each is production?)

We had a Ford Talladega for a visit at the Ford shop where I worked. No, they wouldn't let me drive it. I did get to drive the drag-ready 429 Boss Stang however.

Ford advertised the 69 Torino Talladega at 325 horse. Yah, right.
