As high-profile Republicans (other than Newt Gingrich) flock to endorse Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman in New York's 23rd district special election over the Republican in the three-way race, Dede Scozzafava (R) still has one prominent supporter besides the former Speaker: Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele.
"I support the republican nominee as the republican party chairman, and that's the way it should go, right?" Steele told NBC's Chuck Todd this morning during an interview on MSNBC's Morning Joe (video here--fast forward to 4:55). Conservatives far and wide have alleged Scozzafava is too liberal, as Hoffman has won endorsements from Sarah Palin, Tim Pawlenty, Dick Armey, the Club for Growth, RedState, the National Review, and The Washington Times. Supporting him has become an emblem of conservative credibility.
Conversely, Scozzafava has become something of a third rail for prominent Republicans: if a 2012 hopeful--say, Pawlenty--had endorsed Scozzafava, he would have sparked the ire of the national conservative base. Gingrich remains her only big-time supporter, arguing that the GOP should pursue more electable candidates, rather than "purge" the moderates from its ranks. Steele has taken his lumps from conservatives, but, as party chairman, he's probably not on the hook for this one.

1. If you support someone with a R, and not the same person with the same views ith a D..
You are a party hack,
That's true... but it's also a perfect time for him to purge the RINOs and clean house. He is in charge so he should set the course back to conservatism. That's his job.
My thoughts exactly. Thanks.
If he really cared he would have been working behind the scenes at the start to make sure she did’nt get the nod.As it stands the guy is a dickhaid and no friend of conservatives period.
I agree. Then we have to wonder what is Newts excuse? However as suggested above I would go light on Dede and send the money to the California race.
“Steele Still On Board With Scozzafava”
Of course he is. She’s a liberal.
The PURGE after the next election cycle is going to reach the highest echelons of the Republican party leadership.
Oh goody, I can send this article to Steele in the pre-paid RNC envelope I got yesterday. I’ll just add a personal note for the RNC: This is why I will never give the RNC another dime. You don’t get it. Maybe you never will.
I do hold it against Newt.
Go, Hoffman!
Then he'll go off the cliff too. Sorry, Michael, but you are the wrong man for your job.
Coaches can bench players, trade them, or release them.
“That’s true... but it’s also a perfect time for him to purge the RINOs and clean house”.
Nope, Mikey IS a RINO, and he hasn’t got the stones anyway. Those of us that lived in Maryland tried to tell everyone that Mikey was not what they thought. We knew what he was and he’s still that.
1. Would you support a liberal agenda? Answer (NO!)
There's one question. More at the bottom line at The Patriot's Flag
It’s not our “Purge”, it’s the RNC’s “Putsch”
Yeah, like he's going to purge himself...

Ditto to that idea.
But the advertisements being bought by the RNCC attack Hoffman rather than the democrat. They can't attack the democrat because the democrat is indistinguishable from the Republican.
Steele is done.
Put a fork in him and Newt.
Just sent him a email and told him he’s fired!
I agree.
It’s interesting to consider Newt’s tactic. He says conservatives are being inconsistent with their preference for local control, by not accepting Scuzzyfava, who was chosen by the elites. In Colorado, local pol, McCain asked Jane Norton to run, and shortly after she announced, a flurry of rumors circulated that the leading conservative contender had dropped out of the race.
Newt goes on to say that we have to be a big tent party to win nationally, but his argument isn’t holding up to Hoffman’s surging popularity.
Newt makes his final pitch based on party loyalty, which after the establishment forced Juan McLame on us, and after Republicans and Bush worked together to pass more socialism than Clinton, party loyalty isn’t the appeal you want to base your defense of a liberal who is more liberal than the Democrat opponent.
With Olympia Snowe voting Obamacare out of committee; Liberace Grahamnesty voting Sodamier [sic] out of committee and all of his other betrayals; Newt himself butt-kissing Colon Powell while he chastizes Rush Limbaugh for wanting a Marxist usurper to fail in socializing our nation, it is encouraging to see the rank and file rejecting Newt and the Republican leadership. Hopefully, they haven’t been fooled by these Johnny-come-lately(s).
FYI, Dede Scozzafava is not David Duke.
And there is the kiss of death for the GOP. Forget party candidates folks, all bets are off.
Vote for the conservative, forget which party they belong to. The GOP is nothing now.
Did I say she was? I was giving an instance where the chairman of a party (also the GOP) did not endorse the candidate running on their ticket. I can’t think of another example, but there may be some. The point was, it’s almost unheard of for that to happen.
Newt is part of the problem for sure. How he equates support for local control(should mean picked by the voters)with backroom decisions is just nuts.Tatoo RINO on his forehead along with the others and never forget.
Screw fairness...He needs to go soonest...
Where Steele is involved always remember that he came from Maryland politics and almost nobody escapes that cruddy environment with conservative convictions intact. If he had any to begin with...big assumption.
Newt is being disingenuous...he’s pretending that Scuzzyfava was picked by the rank and file. He caught Laura Ingraham off-guard with that assertion.
