Local gun shop owners say they're seeing an increase in the number of women shoppers right now. The reasons, they say, are many, including the downturn in the economy and violence on the street.
According to the National Shooting Sports Foundation, about 48 percent of people taking their first handgun seminars this year happen to be women. CBS 2's Pamela Jones reports on the growing trend.
"It's very dangerous out there. I mean, there's people getting robbed here and there," said Josie Santiago. "It's just for protection."

Personally, I don’t find Illinois’ gun laws that onerous.
This was me a couple of weeks ago (in Connecticut). It was great!
Now I have to get my town permit and then the state permit. I'm told the state process is fairly quick and painless but the town permit is a pain in the ass...and it has to be done first.

Good for them, but I imagine it must be difficult for a woman to walk into the gun stores in the Chicago area and be a first time gun buyer. Reason being, the owners and the help are usually tools. Having been to enough of the stores in the suburban area I can safely say good luck ladies dealing with those “pros.” (especially the Mega-store, they must have to take a special course in toolage)

Many Chicago suburbs allow handgun ownership but not Conceal/Carry. Most of my suburban cop friends actually turn a blind eye when women carry handguns in their purse. In some cases, where a woman defends herself with a handgun, the carrying charge might be dropped if she cooperates in the conviction process (you’d be surprised how many do NOT want to file a report, according to my cop friends).

In the suburbs of Chicago, where the gun shop mentioned is, they will sell to anyone with a valid FOID (Firearm Owner’s ID) card after a background check.

I believe people can sense things, even though they can't logically explain what it is they're sensing. They just "know" things. The MSM, for example, is saying the economy is doing well, but people know better.
This is a classic case of what I mean. They feel the need to defend themselves from something. They're arming up.
This has been growing since Oboma got elected. I think people know he's going to take them in his own distorted direction, and they don't want to go. They know the majority doesn't want to go, but will be forced anyway. When people are forced to think and act contrary to their conscience, there's hate. Where there's hate, there's violence. Where there's violence, there's war. They see their country being trashed and burned, they can't do anything to stop it, and they're frightened by it. All Americans should be.

I get the point. But this article is about women buying guns in Illinois, which they can do with a reasonable amount of effort. I think the op fell into the Chicago = the rest of Illinois “trap.”

Indeed. Once you're west of 355 or south of I-80 it's really pretty normal. Downstate Illinois is quite beautiful.

Open carry is legal almost everywhere. Buying a firearm of any variety (except for machine guns/full-auto) requires ATF Form 4473, a NICS telephone check and no more.

I’m surprised how matter-of-fact this article was written, no hand-wringing about “It’s gonna be like the OK corral!”
It’s amazing that such a positive article on gun ownership and safety would appear on the website of a CBS affiliate.
I’ve thought for a long time that female gun owners will be the major factor if the Second Amendment is to survive and prevail.
Strange that this is a report by the Chicago Sun-Times an extreme left, liberal news rag which is in bankruptcy.
