Where will the GOP land? (NY-23 analysis)
Miami Herald ^ | 10/28/2009 | Pat Buchanan

For Sarah Palin, party loyalty in New York's 23rd congressional district asks too much. Going rogue, Palin endorsed Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman over Republican Dede Scozzafava.

On Oct. 1, Scozzafava was leading. Today, she trails Democrat Bill Owens and is only a few points ahead of Hoffman, as Empire State conservatives defect to vote their principles, not their party.

Newt Gingrich stayed on the reservation, endorsing Scozzafava, who is pro-choice and pro-gay rights and hauls water for the unions.

Scourged by the right, Newt accused conservatives of going over the hill in the battle to save the republic, just to get a buzz on. ``If we are in the business about feeling good about ourselves while our country gets crushed, then I probably made the wrong decision.''

How Scozzafava would prevent America's being ``crushed'' was unexplained.

The 23rd recalls a famous Senate race 40 years ago. Rep. Charles Goodell was picked by Gov. Nelson Rockefeller to fill the seat of Robert Kennedy in 1968. To hold onto it, Goodell swerved sharp left, emerging as an upstate Xerox copy of Jacob Javits, the most liberal Republican in the Senate.

In 1970, Goodell got both the GOP and Liberal Party nominations, and faced liberal Democrat Richard Ottinger. This left a huge vacuum into which Conservative Party candidate James Buckley, brother of William F., smartly moved.

Buckley scooted between them both to win. Hoffman may also. But even if he does not, Palin, a conservative of the heart, did the right thing.

And the GOP has been sent a necessary message.

Wonder what poll says that. Didn't one the other day have her a distant third and fading?

No, Pat. The GOP may have been sent a message but they aren't listening. We are not done with them yet. I do not care if it finished off the party. I will NEVER support ANY RINO again in any way. As long as the party gives to RINO’s they will get none of my hard earned $$$$$.

Well, you are certainly wrong Mr. Gingrich, and you are also wrong in your analogy above. Your assumption is that Democrat is bad and Republican is good. The accurate analogy is that liberalism is bad and conservatism is good. Get it? I doubt it, you are supporting a political party as if it were a hometown baseball team rather than ideologically. I think there are enough conservatives, like myself and many here who will not support leftists because...it is leftist ideology that has crushed our nation.

Pat needs to stay away from Sarah. She’s got enough her own political baggage without vicariously having to deal with his.

Bottom line, the old style of choosing candidates by party leaders based on a personal favor instead of properly representing the people is OVER.

The conservative movement is alive and getting well - this struggle and attempt to purge the RINO’s is a good first step.

Wow!
The first time in along time I actually find myself agreeing with him.
I stopped reading him after his “Nazis as victims” series.

NY23, is a win for conservatives and ultimately the Republican Party regardless of the election day result. If Hoffman wins, so much the better. If McCain, errr I mean the so called “Republican” candidate loses and the seat goes to a democrat, what the hell is the difference?

This so called “civil war” in the party has been festering for years without a result or even an acknowledgement that it is an actual fight. For the long term health of the party conservatives need to have their say and force the Republican Party to realize that it can no longer claim a conservative foundation if the rest of the house is built to “democrat light” specifications.

This was written Oct.1.
