Fallen Marine's father wants change in Afghanistan (Hey Obama, listen up lightweight!)
AP ^ | 10/13/2009 | DAVID SHARP

It was the last way John Bernard would have wanted his voice to gain prominence in the national debate over the war in Afghanistan. The retired Marine had been writing to lawmakers for weeks complaining of the new rules of engagement he believed put U.S. troops at unacceptable risk in the insurgency-wracked country. He got little response.

Then Bernard's only son, 21-year-old Lance Cpl. Joshua Bernard — a Marine like his dad — was killed in an insurgent ambush in Afghanistan's volatile Helmand province, the latest victim of a surge in U.S. combat deaths.

Three weeks later, Joshua became the face of that toll when The Associated Press published photos of the dying Marine against his father's wishes and John Bernard was thrust into a national debate about the role of the press in wartime.

“Father and son shared the same philosophy: service to God, family, country and Marines — in that order”

...that says it all. This family has more honor, integrity and character than BO could even imagine and that little twirp is running this country.

I believe the increased violence in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Iraq are due directly to the demonstrated weakness of the Gelding-in-Chief.

Couldn’t agree more. All the soldiers and their families are in our prayers as never before. I cannot imagine this Fathers pain and can only pray our Lord will comfort him and give him the words to help save others.

As our troops are fighting the president has spent countless hours playing golf and basketball. He's attended more fund raisers and had more parties at the White House then anyone before him.

I don't begrudge anyone time off.......if they are actually doing their job, but this guy is not. The parents of fallen troops will remember.

My sorrow and my prayers go out to this man and his family in this time of loss. His son is the best example of a fine American patriot and warior! I have two sons in the military and I don’t like what is happening. The poser in the White House had better get a clue! He is a very dangerous person IMO.

Yep, this is personal with me too.

My son graduates USMC SOI on Nov. 4 and will be headed to Afghanistan as a machine gunner.

The SOB in the White House is exposing him to needless risk by his shilly-shallying and weakness.

I have a son in the Army. I know he and the other troops can handle what ever they face. It's their backs I'm worried about. When it comes to national security, Obama is clearly incompetent. His response to domestic challenges is to bully opponents and go give campaign speeches. Intenationally its to apologize and equivocate. This issue for me is not political, its personal.

GOD bless you and your son AnAmericanMother. The sacrifice of your family is appreciated by all. I urge everyone to flood the idiot in the WH that he and he alone is responsible for every single military death due to his dithering. You can use this website for a fast and easy way to contact the D.C. idiots: http://www.dearpolitician.org/index.php

Let's hope the American people never forget what this man is doing and trying to do or who brought him to power. They all need to be dealt with.

I feel the same as you do, it’s personal.

Where my son is now he’s with some of the 82nd Airborne.

My son was wounded in an ambush in eastern Afghanistan in September. I am grateful he is alive. His wounds are extremely serious, and his recovery will be long and painful. The rules of engagement played a direct role in the incident. We cannot prosecute a war in this manner. Our joke of a C-in-C is wasting the lives of our brave troops to propagate political correctness.

We’re in the same boat. My son has lost friends and two are at home rehabing as I type, both will never be the same.

The Wounded Warrior folks should call for a protest in Washington to surround the White House, we would be there.

My youngest son swore into the Air Force last week. He will be a gunner on an AC-130. I couldn’t be more proud of him (even though I was Army), but I do feel a little uneasy about him serving under the gelding-in-chief. I haven’t talked to him about this because I don’t want to curb his enthusiasm. I pray every night for all of our servicemen and women.
