Six UN staff dead in Taliban raid on UN hostel

KABUL — Taliban suicide gunmen stormed a UN hostel in Kabul Wednesday, killing six foreign staff in an assault the Islamist militia said marked the start of a bloody countdown to new Afghan elections.

At least nine UN staff were also injured as gunfire and explosions rang out across the city in a smart residential district near Butcher Street close to popular shopping streets favoured by Westerners.

Afghan police said the gunmen entered the UN-approved guesthouse in Kabul's Shar-e-Now district around dawn. Flames and heavy black smoke spewed into the sky as the security services closed off roads and surrounded the building.

The three gunmen were shot dead around 8:30 am (0400 GMT), Afghan interior ministry spokesman Zemarai Bashary said, about three hours after they launched the latest of a series of brazen raids in the heavily guarded capital city.

"Three suicide bombers have been killed during the police operation, they were armed suicide bombers," Bashary said.

No. The Taliban attacked the UN hosten because they were seen as occupiers, along with the Coalition forces. Period. They don’t differentiate who is who, they lump all foreign occupiers into one category.

And yet, our President keeps diddling around with his decisions on what to do.

Does anyone think it’s a coincidence that the violence in Afghanistan has increased over the last 6 months? They know a weak leader and they know he wants to get out.

He is playing politics and our guys are paying the price over there. God Bless Them!

Pity there isn't the same kind of criticism coming from the GOP as the marxists engaged in when Bush was POTUS.

You expect this commie muzzie son of a whore to treat the military this way but the GOP is failing the troops as well by their silence

“Does anyone think it’s a coincidence that the violence in Afghanistan has increased over the last 6 months? They know a weak leader and they know he wants to get out.”

Precisely. Wars are won and lost in part on perception and morale. The consistency of American policy and resolve to fight terrorism during the Bush administration wore down the morale of the insurgents in Iraq, and was keeping the Taliban guessing in Afghanistan. They are now more confident and regaining their boldness. They also know that the patience of the American public is wearing thin, and that we are in a financial crisis. We're less cohesive as a country now in many ways than we were during Vietnam.

Too bad we can’t get the Taliban to apply their techniques to the UN “peacekeepers” in Lebanon & Gaza, who turn a blind eye to rocket attacks by Hezbollah & Hamas—from UN property, such as the UNRWA school in Gaza. NAH, of course not.

The only reason the Taliban attacked these folks is that they were defenseless & vulnerable. Just like the Afghani girls & women the Taliban attacked & killed when the Taliban controlled the country—and just as they continue to attack girls & women in schools. The Taliban are just hateful cowards who will attack anyone weaker than they are (including defenseless statues of buddha.)

When the friend dithers, everyone loses. Friends fight for supremacy and power amongst themselves. A dithering President creates lots of problems at home and abroad. A true friend is strong and steadfast. This man is a friend to no one.

I don’t take any pleasure in reading about the loss of U.N. member’s lives. It’s a shame this attack took place. Their family members and friends have my sympathy.

That being said, I would like to draw people’s attention the article from just yesterday, which addressed a U.N. member dissing the United States for the use of drones, to combat terrorists. Of course, it was an anti-US diatribe. Of course the U.S. was the bad guy for using drones to attack terrorists.

Well, when the U.S. attacks terrorists, this and other bombings are what it is trying to prevent. We seek to disrupt terrorists wherever they are. And if we use a drone to do it, the U.N. staff should damn well thank the U.S. for having done so. For the very people that may be taken out, could very likely be the people who plan or carry out these bombings.

The U.S. isn’t trying to kill innocent people. If we were and the Afghan people knew it, we would never win them over. If we’re taking out people who are a threat to them as well as our troops, they won’t be angry with us.

The U.N.’s proclivity to suspect the U.S. yet put Khadaffi and the like into leadership positions on U.N. councils, is one of the reasons why I think we should leave the organization.

Here is just one more example of a problem that will be totally disconnected from the thought process the next time the U.N. wants to rag on the U.S.

Here’s a hint for the U.N. staff members. Try criticizing terrorist even 1/10th as much as you do the U.S. That change in U.N. policy would be a breath of fresh air.

From one U.S. Citizen to you, I say screw you for trashing the U.S. regularly as you do. The U.N. attack that killed your people in Afghanistan, should be a wake up call for anyone who truly wants to be an even handed player. It won’t be for those who loathe the U.S., and you know what, we know who and what your members are.

Couldn’t agree more. I just addressed the same issue directly. One wonders why the U.N. shouldn’t apologize profusely to the U.S., but you know damn well they won’t.

Pretty much the same thing happened in Iraq about four years ago. That’s when the U.N. staff packed up their tooth-brushes and left the country.

The U.N. has no business in a war zone. It can trash the U.S. from it’s offices in N.Y. It doesn’t need to be in the combat zone.
