KABUL — Taliban suicide gunmen stormed a UN hostel in Kabul Wednesday, killing six foreign staff in an assault the Islamist militia said marked the start of a bloody countdown to new Afghan elections.
At least nine UN staff were also injured as gunfire and explosions rang out across the city in a smart residential district near Butcher Street close to popular shopping streets favoured by Westerners.
Afghan police said the gunmen entered the UN-approved guesthouse in Kabul's Shar-e-Now district around dawn. Flames and heavy black smoke spewed into the sky as the security services closed off roads and surrounded the building.
The three gunmen were shot dead around 8:30 am (0400 GMT), Afghan interior ministry spokesman Zemarai Bashary said, about three hours after they launched the latest of a series of brazen raids in the heavily guarded capital city.
"Three suicide bombers have been killed during the police operation, they were armed suicide bombers," Bashary said.

No. The Taliban attacked the UN hosten because they were seen as occupiers, along with the Coalition forces. Period. They don’t differentiate who is who, they lump all foreign occupiers into one category.
My “Give A Damn” is broke now,,,:

Send this guy...
Wouldn’t the Taliban be foreign occupiers?
And yet, our President keeps diddling around with his decisions on what to do.
Does anyone think it’s a coincidence that the violence in Afghanistan has increased over the last 6 months? They know a weak leader and they know he wants to get out.
He is playing politics and our guys are paying the price over there. God Bless Them!
These were not your “moderate” Taliban...... /sarc
Sorry,
I have little syjmpathy for U.N. anything.
You expect this commie muzzie son of a whore to treat the military this way but the GOP is failing the troops as well by their silence
Precisely. Wars are won and lost in part on perception and morale. The consistency of American policy and resolve to fight terrorism during the Bush administration wore down the morale of the insurgents in Iraq, and was keeping the Taliban guessing in Afghanistan. They are now more confident and regaining their boldness. They also know that the patience of the American public is wearing thin, and that we are in a financial crisis. We're less cohesive as a country now in many ways than we were during Vietnam.
Friends of Obama killing each other off?
You see, the UN and Taliban ARE NOT friends of each other. The Taliban still lumps the UN into the foreign occupier category.
Of course.
Too bad we can’t get the Taliban to apply their techniques to the UN “peacekeepers” in Lebanon & Gaza, who turn a blind eye to rocket attacks by Hezbollah & Hamas—from UN property, such as the UNRWA school in Gaza. NAH, of course not.
The only reason the Taliban attacked these folks is that they were defenseless & vulnerable. Just like the Afghani girls & women the Taliban attacked & killed when the Taliban controlled the country—and just as they continue to attack girls & women in schools. The Taliban are just hateful cowards who will attack anyone weaker than they are (including defenseless statues of buddha.)
I dread the strongly-worded letter of reprimand that the U.N. will unleash upon the Taliban in response...
Ah yes, the Taliban, who should have a place in the Afghan government according to Dear Leader. Make no mistake, the blast in Pakistan and this are related... with one purpose: to get the US out of Afghanistan and overthrow the Pakistan gov’t. Obama will roll over, watch.
O’s friendly Taliban, the group that he wants in the government?
When the friend dithers, everyone loses. Friends fight for supremacy and power amongst themselves. A dithering President creates lots of problems at home and abroad. A true friend is strong and steadfast. This man is a friend to no one.
.....was truly delicious.....
LOL!
Has the U.N. condemned Israel over this yet?
GOLF
He is playing politics and our guys are paying the price over there. God Bless Them!
There, fixed it.
“But, but, the UN is the friend of the Taliban!”
This time they are going to write a very very angry letter.
Yes, the strongly-worded letter will really impact them, I’m sure. Kind of like Time-Outs and talking are so effective for kids. not.

I don’t take any pleasure in reading about the loss of U.N. member’s lives. It’s a shame this attack took place. Their family members and friends have my sympathy.
That being said, I would like to draw people’s attention the article from just yesterday, which addressed a U.N. member dissing the United States for the use of drones, to combat terrorists. Of course, it was an anti-US diatribe. Of course the U.S. was the bad guy for using drones to attack terrorists.
Well, when the U.S. attacks terrorists, this and other bombings are what it is trying to prevent. We seek to disrupt terrorists wherever they are. And if we use a drone to do it, the U.N. staff should damn well thank the U.S. for having done so. For the very people that may be taken out, could very likely be the people who plan or carry out these bombings.
The U.S. isn’t trying to kill innocent people. If we were and the Afghan people knew it, we would never win them over. If we’re taking out people who are a threat to them as well as our troops, they won’t be angry with us.
The U.N.’s proclivity to suspect the U.S. yet put Khadaffi and the like into leadership positions on U.N. councils, is one of the reasons why I think we should leave the organization.
Here is just one more example of a problem that will be totally disconnected from the thought process the next time the U.N. wants to rag on the U.S.
Here’s a hint for the U.N. staff members. Try criticizing terrorist even 1/10th as much as you do the U.S. That change in U.N. policy would be a breath of fresh air.
From one U.S. Citizen to you, I say screw you for trashing the U.S. regularly as you do. The U.N. attack that killed your people in Afghanistan, should be a wake up call for anyone who truly wants to be an even handed player. It won’t be for those who loathe the U.S., and you know what, we know who and what your members are.
A case of “Friendly Fire”.
Couldn’t agree more. I just addressed the same issue directly. One wonders why the U.N. shouldn’t apologize profusely to the U.S., but you know damn well they won’t.
Pretty much the same thing happened in Iraq about four years ago. That’s when the U.N. staff packed up their tooth-brushes and left the country.
The U.N. has no business in a war zone. It can trash the U.S. from it’s offices in N.Y. It doesn’t need to be in the combat zone.
Over the past 10 years who has screwed America more the Taliban or the UN??
Latest on that:
Mike Fox: Maldives Raising Sea Level Fraud
**************************EXCERPT******************************
This is not limited to the scientific frauds of the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), but extends into other significant agencies. One of the major areas of climate misrepresentation is that involving global sea levels.
The UN must immediately fight force with force by passing a slew of resolutions!
Crickey, and Obama wants to ally himself with these critters? Why doesn’t the “Thaleebahn” just do what Hizbollah does and operate their bases with UN flags? Oops, Taliban idea committee..
Im shocked by some people on here who say ‘they don’t give a damn’. People just lost their lives, a holes.
Prayer for their families.
So it’s alright if UN die? Put UN in front of their name and suddenly they don’t count as humans? Why don’t you go join the Muzzies and take some out yourself, maybe you’ll be satisfied then.
You ever been assigned to a U.N. peace keeping anything there pal?
They are pathetic.
Mamby pamby is not even close.
This marxist punk is handing over a lot of military control to these fools.
A lot of Americans will get killed due to this. Pal.
The U.N. should be thrown out of the U.S. Pal.
Oh yeah, one more thing, you ain’t my pal.
Oh, I thought maybe “Pal” was short for Palestinian.
Nope. No evidence of Israeli complicity.
clown has been lurking for two months and is going to scold me for my dislike of anything U.N.?
Fool.
...it was a joke. (Perhaps not a very good one.)
Why do you call me a fool?
I think you are a pathetic human being, and I wasn’t scolding you for disliking the UN. It’s a pathetic organization that does nothing.
What I’m scolding you on is your clear lack of value of human life. That is what I find pathetic about you.
Done much traveling there Synthex?\
Or are you strictly a suburb type?
Go areound the world a few times.
Live in a third world country for a year or so pal.
The value of human life?
Get over yourself.
I don’t see what my traveling has to do with anything, but I have been to Europe, Africa and Asia before, I don’t know why you assumed I have not. That is neither here nor there though.
You say you don’t give a damn because they worked for the UN. The Taliban didn’t give a damn either, that’s why they carried out the attack. Do you condone their behavior?
Course not, don’t be foolish.
Why? Cause most foot soldiers in U.N. come from places folks leave. For good reason.
