Fred Thompson, the former senator and candidate for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination, is upping the ante in the inner Republican party battle over the special election in New York's 23rd congressional district by starring in an ad for Doug Hoffman, the Conservative Party candidate.
Thompson, who first endorsed Hoffman last month, has recently been joined by Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin in endorsing him over the Republican Party nominee, Republican State Assemblywoman Dede Scozzafava. The election, which happens a week from today, is being held up as a case study of the current conflict within the Republican party.
"Big government, high taxes, deficits, broken promises -- America is in trouble," Thompson says in the ad. "So when your grandchildren ask you why you didn't do something, be able to tell them that you voted for Doug Hoffman."

Win or lose, every Republican candidate for the next 4 years needs to copy Doug Hoffman’s humble, honest principled campaign against the ACORN/democrat thugs.
And skip the comments. Nothing but a bunch of brain dead RINO's.
A decent ad that might attract many votes, but the photo of Hoffman at the end...
WTF are they thinking? Shut your festering gob, man. Open-mouth smiles are for porn queens, not Conservative/conservative political campaigns!
It’s bad enough Mr. Hoffman looks like a computer geek, but that photo is PAINFUL to look at. Are you guys TRYING to sabotage your own message here?
20 minutes in a hair salon and 15 more with a TV “dresser” (makeup pro) in a professional studio, and our friend will be FAR more attractive to the voters we NEED.
He already has the conservative vote. We have to sell this to the less informed, and making him look like what the voters *THINK* they want is the answer.
The opposition has been doing this for years. It’s OUR turn.
“Its bad enough Mr. Hoffman looks like a computer geek, but that photo is PAINFUL to look at. Are you guys TRYING to sabotage your own message here?”
Agreed entirely. How someone thought that photo was a great idea is beyond me.
Doug Hoffman - Thread Bump.
They probably wanted to portray him a friendly, outgoing person, so they picked one with wide smile.
As much as I want the man to win, I still have a LOT of trouble with that “smile”, and think it closer to creepy than inviting. YMMV, JMPO.
All the best in your campaign, but LAWDIE, that’s a HORRID picture of your candidate, may God bless us all.
Have you anything constructive to contribute, or are you just seeking attention?
I made a statement, and you reacted but had nothing to say other than you didn’t like what I said.
Do you have something to contribute to the discussion? Can you refute or augment my statements, or the arguments of anyone else? If so, then say/type it.
If not, then shaddup and watch/listen to the adults.
Good grief Don. Either the two of you have a history or you're quite testy this a.m. I thought the comment was funny.
Sweet.
I think it is a great picture of the man. I see a genuine smile by a man who isn’t put together by professionals. And if he loses, he will forever be known for getting in the ring.
Just for snits and giggles, for the second time tonight:
I thought the idea was to present someone with the right ideas, not another 5th avenue poser who is only in it for the power.
If you don’t like his smile, vote for Scuzzy or the Dem then and show your total ignorance to voting in anyone who can get the job done.
His smile is of no bearing to the PRINCIPLES he stands for and I’d rather have someone who is not a camera magnet because they will more likely be busy at work for us.
Good to see Fred fired up about something. I thought he had fallen asleep from the excitement of his presidential run.
That is definitely the idea. That is why Fred has endorsed, principles. That is why Sarah has endorsed, principles. That is why I am donating to his campaign from 1500 miles away.
Hopefully we can put the dunce hat on Newt and sit him quietly in the corner and get a strong message to the RNC that RINOs are toast!
Our ‘American Idol’ culture, especially the women; voted for the ‘pretty smile’ last November. Look where we are now. We need to get beyond that BS; once and for all. Vote principles.
nice spot
