On Tuesday, a Jones County physical science teacher who pled no contest to nine felonies was sentenced to 45 days in prison in Lenoir County Superior Court.

On June 10, Shebana Rajput, 36, of Aaron Johnson Lane in Kinston, was charged with eight counts of sexual activity with a student and one count of sex offense with a student. She pled no contest to the charges last month.

Jones County authorities contacted the Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office May 23 about an investigation of a sexual assault by a teacher with a student.

From March through May, Rajput allegedly had nine sexual encounters with a 17-year-old Jones Senior student. Lenoir County authorities got involved because the alleged incidents took place at her Kinston home.

The age of consent in North Carolina is 16.

According to the Lenoir County Clerk of Court, Rajput was sentenced to 10 to 12 months in the Department of Corrections, which was suspended to 36 months probation; she will also have to pay a $10,000 fine for the sexual activity with a student charge. She will serve a 45-day sentence in the N.C. Department of Corrections, which will begin today, for the one count of sex offense with a student.

Additionally, a Clerk of Court representative said Rajput would have to register with her local Sheriff’s Office as a sex offender. Rajput was also ordered to have no contact with the victim.

Lead investigator Detective Christy Smith of the Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office said this was Rajput’s first major scrape with the law.

“This was the first time the defendant had been charged with a felony,” Smith said. “The victim in this case was not underage, but the fact that he was a student of Rajput’s makes it a felony.”

Smith said the victim — who is now 19 — has been undergoing counseling.

A Clerk of Court representative said the fate of Rajput’s teaching license was not discussed in court on Tuesday.

45 days in jail? That’s it? Pedophilia doesn’t cost much these day, does it?

If it were a normal photo (instead of a mug shot) and she lost the glasses, I’d have to say “Not Guilty”.

"The victim in this case was not underage, but the fact that he was a student of Rajput’s makes it a felony.” "

I totally disagree with this law.

Looks like a mug shot or a passport photo.

She gets jail and likely the end of her teaching career, he gets counseling. Sounds much better than a divorce. The kid is very lucky.
