The reform-minded conservative (Mitch Daniels)
WASHINGTON TIMES ^ | 27 OCTOBER 2009 | Frank Donatelli

magine a two-term Republican governor from a state carried by Barack Obama who turned an $800 million deficit into a $1.2 billion surplus by cutting overhead and bringing sound business principles to his state's government even as he provided new health benefits for poor citizens. Imagine no longer. Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels accomplished this and more, and he did it all while enacting the biggest tax cut in state history.

Despite a long career in public service, Mr. Daniels is not nearly as well-known as some of his colleagues. He worked for several years on Capitol Hill as chief aide to Sen. Richard G. Lugar and served former President Ronald Reagan as political director. After a 15-year stint in private business, Mr. Daniels became former President George W. Bush's director of the Office of Management and Budget and then won back-to-back gubernatorial races in 2004 and 2008 in Indiana. His second victory was won with the biggest vote total of any candidate for any office in state history.

Left out his selling the toll road to the Saudis and/or friends. Not only raising taxes for everyone for a hundred years but also taxing anyone that crossed his state. What a dirt bag.

it's called a "Lease" and it was to a Spanish/Australian consortium. It's still belongs to the state and gives us a Billion Dollars in the bank when most all other states are deeply in the red.

Not to mention that he’s on record saying (words to effect) that we need to get over Reagan conservatism.

There is a place for him. He’s not a complete RINO like Snowe, et al, but he isn’t the conservative leader needed to redirect the Republican Party or save the nation.

“....from a state carried by Barack Obama...”

How the F### that happened I still can’t figure out. Talk about the salt being poured in my wound on election night.

We go from being the FIRST state that turns RED for GWB in 2004 to this thug.

Thanks McLameAss!

Look up and see how many state republicans lost their seats over his lame a** toll roads, he wanted to sell more until the people almost revolted.

I agree. He’s been good for my state, but this is as far as I’d like to see him go.

Like I said, it bothers me, but we had 16 years of Democrat rule in a Red State, it’s better than what we had.

What really pis** me off about tolls road is about the same time the republicans got President Dwight D. Eisenhower name put on them , they started trying to selling their heritage, like a bunch of cheap pimps.

My only beef with Daniels is that he lacks the looks, charisma, and the passion to be President. I’ll probably get raked over the coals for emphasizing style over substance, but if we’re going to beat Obama and the Dems we need to support someone who’s telegenic that can ignite the grassroots.

I don’t think so. He leased the operation of it to foreigners, I believe.

I had Democrat inlaws that wouldn’t shut up about it, but at the same time their own elected officials had us in the red.

Then they complained about him helping keep the Colts in the state, again I’m not 100% on board with him but he’s better than what we had before.

I agree, he stinks of RINOism and I’d rather not have him as President. There will never be a major change back to our roots with him as POTUS.

That is a polite way of saying he’s a wet noodle. Just about as welcome as a wet dog at a party.

First I’ve heard that. Not saying it’s not true, just never heard it before.

Lived in the northern half of IN for over 50 years, never had a reason to be on the toll road that I can remember. I just know that the lease payed for a lot of other road improvements in the state. Roads that I DO travel on.

So, forgive my selfishness.

Dear Mitch:
I know that one of your cronies posted this on some wild idea that it will advance your presidential aspirations. Let me assure you that Sarah will be our next President. You sir, have no chance.

Just taking welfare from people who do cross your state and all the things they buy. But what the hell let the good times roll, the grand kids can pay for it.

What a line of crap. If someone ‘leases’ my house for 100 years, they OWN it as far as I’m concerned. Maybe my great grandchildren will get it back, but no one before then.

We don’t appreciate apologists on this site. He screwed up BIG TIME and EVERYONE in Indiana knows it.

If everone in Indiana knows Governor Daniels screwed up, why did we re-elect him with the greatest vote turnout in state history?
