MUMBAI: Students in a CBSE school need no longer worry about failing in classes IX or X. Besides altering several evaluation methods, the CBSE board will now allow students who do not clear classes IX and X three more attempts to make the grade. And if they fail to do so, the board is considering taking into account their performance in extracurricular activities and sports. So if you're an ace footballer with a poor math score, there's a chance you'll still pass the year.

Assessment, too will be revamped. A child who fares poorly in written exams can be tested orally, or via projects, to see if he has understood the concepts. Moreover, the CBSE board, which is in the process of making board exams optional and replacing them with a system of continuous and comprehensive evaluation in classes IX and X, now wants schools to show students their answer sheets over the two years and take into account students' feedback before the final grade is given.

The Class IX and X term papers will now be set by the board, so the level of question papers in CBSE schools across the country remains the same. Those who are gifted at say, biology, or math, can opt for a proficiency test in the subject, which will have questions at the level of a science Olympiad.

The Measures * CBSE board will set first and second term papers for classes IX and X, in a bid to standardise exam papers across India

* Students will be given corrected answer papers. They can provide suggestions (like answers not corrected) and final grade will be given only after incorporating feedback

Students will also be graded on extracurricular activities, sports, physical fitness, attitudes and life skills There will be a single report card for Classes IX and X, in which students will have to list goals, strengths, hobbies and interests, sports played and exceptional achievements

* Students who are exceptionally good at a particular subject can opt for a proficiency test in that subject

When I grew up in India the school system was of a very high standard and it was normal for students to fail if they did not make the cut. Now as liberal influences spread to India (ACORN has branches there) slowly the dumbing down of the education system is beginning. This approach would be laughed out the door just 15 years ago and now it is accepted thought...trace it and no doubt some US ivy league educated liberal education major is behind this mess.

Yes it used to very regimented and was very precise back when you could call a spade a spade. As ACORN and liberalism has spread there it is infiltrating all aspects of society. The affirmative act5ion policies there are destroying some of the finest universities by reserving spots for students and teachers and lowering standards.

We in the USA started down this path a long time ago in our publik skrools so we are at an advanced stage of decay. India is at least 20 years behind but by ensuring everyone passes every class they are coming down that same path. For this to take hold the parents need to be active participants in “feel good” parenting and that is not the case yet. Parents tend to be very strict and have much more of a say in their kids lives at least now. A full fledged 60’s style revolution has not taken place yet and that is necessary for wide spread liberalism. India is a socialist in the sense that a big part of the economy is still govt controlled but it is not a welfare state so individuals still have to fend for themselves and family is the support structure. Lot of pillars still left for the libs to destroy.

Nothing wrong with this, as long as the content of the exams isn’t being dumbed down. There’s no reason to insist that kids either achieve fast, or be denied the opportunity to achieve ever. That’s just stupid. There are all sorts of legitimate reasons why some kids are slower to achieve academically than others. In some cases, it’s because they have decent values, and refuse to push everything else aside — dying grandparents, younger siblings who need help and encouragement, religious/spiritual activities, etc — in order to focus exclusively on stuffing their own resumes. I’ve seen way too many cases of these self-centered, straight A overachievers, who look awesome on paper, and keep getting pushed up the line until they’re in positions of huge responsibility on business or government or medicine, and eventually their complete lack of values emerges.

The hot-shot investment bankers who brought us the new phenomenon of garbage-backed mortgage-derivatives were mostly hot-shot overachievers from top schools, who moved up in the world of finance very quickly, because they kept right on getting the equivalent of straight As. Your boss tells you originate zillions of dollars worth of securities, to generate millions of dollars in fees that will be used to calculate how “good” you are? Your job is on the line if don’t make those numbers? Can’t find enough legitimate businesses or securitization structures to make those numbers? No problem — be focused, find a way, ANY way, to MAKE THE NUMBERS and FAST. So what if the securities you’re originating are really garbage and will end up costing a lot of innocent people their life’s savings. So what if your kids barely know you because you’re at work all the time and glued to your Blackberry when you’re home. So what if you have no clue that your elderly next door neighbor died 6 months ago, and his widow is wasting away from a combination of depression and inability to drive to the grocery store because of advanced macular degeneration. ALWAYS hit the the target the authority figures tell you to hit, NO MATTER WHAT.

We are presently suffering from the predictable results of this mentality.
