In every mid-term election, there is a race for governor that draws nationwide attention and packs a political punch far beyond the borders of its state. This year, Virginia and New Jersey have drawn that attention.
The elections of Govs. Nelson Rockefeller in New York in 1958 and Ronald Reagan in California in 1966 helped shaped national Republican politics for nearly a generation. The likely election of Bob McDonnell in Virginia this year -- if it comes to pass -- will probably be another.
Next year, it will be Ohio where former congressman and host of Fox News’ “Heartland” program -- John Kasich -- is going to try to recapture the governorship for Republicans. But Kasich isn’t a “party establishment” candidate.

FWIW, Kasich voted for the Clinton “assault weapons” ban of 1994. I’ve not been too fond of him ever since.
“But Kasich isnt a party establishment candidate.”
So he’s a conservative?
Please God, he is our only hope.
Teddy Strickland is an idiot. His education reform plan: Increase the school year from 180 days to 220 days, and eliminate or calamity days. Does he have no clue what the financial impact of this plan will be? Plus, the children aren’t going to learn more from the extra 40 days. It will only be 40 additional days of indoctrination. Trust me, i m a publik scewl teechur.
I love Kasich...hope he gets governorship. He is a man of values.
The ideas outlined in the article are smart...very smart. Those ideas are the key to changing the game in Ohio and other former manufacturing states.
Doubt it!!!!
“I love Kasich...hope he gets governorship. He is a man of values.”
Everyone has “values.”
Not to be too cynical or argumentative, but I have seen big-talk before... not a lot mind you, as most politicians are not daring or innovative at heart, and I actually think Kasich means it, as opposed to making promises for the sake of the illusion. However, the types of things he talks about would meet systematic resistance.
It would be a revolution indeed were to to have much success.
LOL, and you would be wrong, kids should go to school year round and stop wasting tax payers money. You just want your long vacation. The only reason there was a summer off was so kids could work on the farms in the summer. That is long past, keep them in school and off the streets.
Rumors of his philandering ways were quite abundant during his congressional years. Didn’t he party with Gary Conditt et al? Beware of a scandal in his past coming to light.
As a supporter of Ken Blackwell the last election, I’m still upset how he was treated. (After the last debate, the local news channel called Ken an ‘angry black man’.)
At least that won’t happen to John.
yes, he is also the man that single handed balanced the federal budget during the Clinton years. He is a very good man. Ohio is lucky to have him.
okay, okay....you picky buzzard.
It is not because I want a long vacation. Please don’t put words in my mouth. The public school system is a system of indoctrination. My school days are a constant battle to teach my students actual information, not indoctrinate them on tolerance and acceptance of lifestyles that they may not agree with. I have a grammar book that uses global warming for all of the writing examples. Do you know how angry that makes me? I have to create my own material so that I don’t have to use that stupid book.
The financial implications are terrible. First, as I have said, I am part of a failing education system. Why dump more money into something that does not work? Because schools will be used 40 additional days, they must be cleaned, lit, air conditioned/heated, etc. Water usage will increase, as well as teachers’ wages. Secretaries and other support staff will be paid an additional 40 days. The buses will be used, meaning higher gas usage, and bus drivers will be paid an additional 40 days. 40 additional days of breakfasts and lunches will be served by lunch ladies who will have to be compensated. I could go on but I won’t. The bottom line is this: Who will pay for all of this? The taxpayers will. Our taxes will go up so that children can learn to recycle their pop cans and accept homosexuals for who they are because they are born that way.
“okay, okay....you picky buzzard.”
Just sayin’.....”values” mean different things from one person to the next.
Kasich is a liar and can’t be trusted. His word is no good.
True, well run government that actually runs a state like a business and treats the citizens as share holders seems like it should be standard operating procedure but you are right, it would be reolutionary.
The best thing I heard last week was the idea of reviving the free state movement. The idea is that libertarians pick one state and move there until they saturate the state and are able to control the governor’s office, legislature, senate and local municipalities. From there, they lead by example as to how a solid state that stays out of the way of growth and out of the way of citizen’s freedom is run.
I like the idea but the biggest problem is that all the free loaders would move there to find work and then bring the same old entitlement mentality with them.
Go figure.
Kasich has had his occasional un-conservative hiccups (he may need some brush-up courses at the EIB's Limbaugh Institute on guns & the environment) but in contrast to typical Ohio Establishment GOPers, he'd be a major improvement.
