Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels-"After Obama, Republicans Won't Have To Apologize For Nixon, Anymore!"

Hell of a quote, just 5 minutes ago on Greg Garrison's Radio Show!

"After Obama, Republicans Won't Have To Apologize For Nixon, Anymore!"

He went on to talk about how Obama needs to jettison some of the crazies around him. He was VERY frank!

Hmm. Wonder if Mitch is a Republican or a conservative? That is the lens I am going to look through as 2010 approaches. We see it playing out in NY23. Newt is a Republican, Palin is a conservative.

Many comparisons are being made lately between Nixon and Obama.

What with their enemies list, their hatred and distrust of the media, and psycho behaviors.

Too much of a big government weinnie. Has some good ideas, but is not against big government solutions. I don't trust him on social issues either.

sorry, I don’t feel we have to apologize for Nixon. He ended that ridiculous situation in Vietnam that too many American lives were lost more than 30 years later due to Agent Orange, and the toll keeps ticking, because it affects their children and their childrens children.

Johnson escalated that atrocity and the dems should be apologizing for Johnson and Carter as well. There are NO viable democrat candidates. They are all to be apologized for.

“I have seen speculation that this guy has real potential for our future. Any thoughts?”

LOTS of them....
I’d go to the wall to see this guy become President, but I’m not sure he wants to be.

He’s DEFINATELY got the background and record for a Conservative Mantel, and he doesn’t push on the Social Issues that would force the Center to the Democrats.

Knows the National Scene VERY well (he was Exec Director of the National Republican Senatorial Committee), and you cannot dipsute his record as Gov.

Most importantly, he was director of the Office of Management and Budget under GWB, and served on both the National Security Council and the Homeland Security Council.

Indiana is the ONLY state that actually GAINED jobs last month, despite all of the job-killing legislation coming out of Washington.

Nixon unfortunately like so many others in history including Sen. Joe McCarthy, Pope Pius XII, Presidents Hoover and Harding gets a very bum rap.

Nixon, while insecure, imperfect, and even devious a times, was certainly no worse than LBJ, JFK, or WJC. I wish people would lay off the man. He was punished and humiliated enough. He is a saint compared to the Marxist SOB who now inhabits the WH.

Mitch is my governor. Every time we write a letter to Congress we cc Mitch Daniels.

His office likes to tell me, “Well, that’s a federal issue . . . write to Bayh and Lugar, please.”

But we started putting a special message in the letters to the governor asking him to stand up for the liberties of Indiana citizens against the ilitism and over-reach of the federal government.

The messages from his office referring us to our senators stopped. Perhaps they got our point . . .don’t know.

Perhaps Mitch Daniels is someone to be considered for higher office. I’ll be watching more closely.

I completely disagree with you, Governor Daniels has done a great job steering Indiana through this horrible economy. He is adamantly opposed to tax increases, he supports fiscal responsibility, he is pro life, he's against Obamacare and he strongly opposes Cap and Trade. What's not to trust?

It's very superficial, but Mitch Daniels -- my governor -- is all of 5' 2" tall. I've stood next to him. Very short in stature. In this image-driven society, he would be seen as a cartoon.

I like the guy a lot, but that's the unfortunate state of where we are.

Funny thing about how history get written. Nixon won that war , had our troops out of the country, and had forced the North to recognize the South. Sad thing was that he could have won the election in a walk without taking the low road. His problem was that no matter what he did, the Establishment still rejected him.

“Very short in stature. In this image-driven society, he would be
seen as a cartoon.”

A fair observation, as (IIRC) most of the time voters go for the
taller of the Dem/Rep Presidential candidates.

Maybe Daniel should follow in the foot steps of the late, great
Rep. Carl Albert of Oklahoma...a small fellow that had big influence
in the House of Representatives.

I remember that Albert (from the era when Democrats could still
be pro-USA) said he chose wrestling in high school because he knew
he could compete/win...despite his more-than-modest stature.

The One Hundred Percenters like to point to the fact that Mitch didn’t get out and twist arms in the democratically controlled House to get a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage while, at the same time, trying to round up the votes to push through property tax reform.

I like Mitch. I hope he runs for President. But I doubt it.

Yes, I am afraid you are right. Of course, La Guardia was not much taller, But Daniels does not exude that much energy. The obvious strategy, of course, is to pre-empt the problem with humor. or to go in another direction, use Stephen Douglas’ approach. “The Little Giant”. Of course, I don’t recommend he take Douglas’ approach of out-drinking his rivals.

Please don’t besmirch Nixon by comparing him to Obama. Nixon was a American, not a socialist/marxist and competent in foreign affairs. He was not intent on destroying America. His only enduring failure was creating the EPA.

Humor could work, but only if Daniels himself took the initiative to get out in front of it and seize the “small in stature/big on ideas” platform well in advance of any snickering by opponents, so that it’s not seen as a defensive move. Even if he were able to do that, the height thing is a big handicap in a political climate where a fraction of voters are really informed on issues, and are swayed by wholly superficial things like looks and speeches—another area where Daniels is weak. You’re right, he does not exude energy or enthusiasm. That would be an even bigger handicap than the height.

Of the governors in the possible field for 2012, I’m not seeing anything approaching the level of communication skill needed to capture the imagination of a nation.

The truth is this: The Left never forgave RMN for exposing their golden boy, Alger Hiss for the Communist traitor he really was. They patiently waited for Nixon to slip up and then pounced when the Watergate Scandal broke— a very tame and lame scandal by Washington standards—almost a teenage prank quite frankly.

Carter was ineffective yes. But his ineffectiveness was extremely harmful. His naivety caught him totally off guard when the Soviets invaded Afghanistan (after they already quite accurately calculated a weak response from Carter). Carter’s insanely naive and ridiculous human rights policy helped pull the rug right from under our steadfast and loyal ally, the Shah— thus helping to trigger the rise of radical Islam—which continues to severly impact us to this day. While RR’s policies helped undue much of the damage inflicted by Carter with respects to the USSR, we are still suffering to this day from Carter’s naivite and foolishness in the Middle East.

EXACTLY!!! These comparisons with Nixon are ridiculous. Think whatever you like about Richard Nixon. But no one could ever claim he wasn’t experienced or qualified for the job. In selecting BHO, the Democrats came up with one of their most inexperienced and backbencher senators. BHO hadn’t accomplished a thing in either the US senate or the Illinois state senate. This was ALL ABOUT AFFIRMATIVE ACTION and NOTHING and I do mean NOTHING to do with experience and qualifications.

Agreed. What in the hell happened to Indiana? The state had not voted for a Democrat presidential nominee since 1964. Then, when they finally decided to vote for a Democrat, it was the most radical left candidate ever nominated by that Party. I always thought that states like Indiana, Virgina, and North Carolina were rock ribbed conservative salt of earth states. I have been living in CA since the 1980s and have sadly watched this state which used to be the heart of Reagan Country become a solid blue left leaning state. But Indiana? Virginia? NC? My God did a whole bunch of wacky Californians move into these states?

Daniels did a whistle stop tour of Indiana when he ran for governor, and people find him pretty personable. While Daniels can't tour the country in an RV while running for President, his first gubenatorial campaign showed that he is a creative thinker that is capable of delivering his message in a way that resonates with potential voters.

Considering his reelection numbers in a state that went for Obama, seems like Mitch is doing a pretty decent job in communicating with the voters.
