Climate chief Lord Stern: give up meat to save the planet
Times Online ^ | Robin Pagnamenta

Posted on 10/27/2009 5:48:08 AM PDT by Overtaxed Patriot

People will need to turn vegetarian if the world is to conquer climate change, according to a leading authority on global warming.

In an interview with The Times, Lord Stern of Brentford said: “Meat is a wasteful use of water and creates a lot of greenhouse gases. It puts enormous pressure on the world’s resources. A vegetarian diet is better.”

Direct emissions of methane from cows and pigs is a significant source of greenhouse gases. Methane is 23 times more powerful than carbon dioxide as a global warming gas.

Lord Stern, the author of the influential 2006 Stern Review on the cost of tackling global warming, said that a successful deal at the Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen in December would lead to soaring costs for meat and other foods that generate large quantities of greenhouse gases.

He predicted that people’s attitudes would evolve until meat eating became unacceptable. “I think it’s important that people think about what they are doing and that includes what they are eating,” he said. “I am 61 now and attitudes towards drinking and driving have changed radically since I was a student. People change their notion of what is responsible. They will increasingly ask about the carbon content of their food.”

This is nuts, doesnt’ make sense.

A few hundred years ago there were millions of bison roaming the great plains, larger herds of caribou in the tundra, and much larger herds of grazing animals in Africa and elsewhere. I guess they didn’t fart though.

Think I’m having a nice rare steak tonight.

Even now reindeer and muskox are sustained by over 1/4 of the entire land surface of the Earth.

Even human beings don't graze that much!

The idiocy of the left has got to be a gift from God (you know, the one that doesn’t exist).

We couldn’t dial up a more complete set of vapid, clueless idiots had we tried.

The problem is that these folks will lie, cheat and steal to stay where they are.

Be prepared. Keep that powder dry.

Credentials, please!

You're not a 'leading authority' until several people who know the field [and who's hand is not in your pocket] says you are.

I'm sick to death of these self-proclaiming liberals.

One of these days, the people will grow tired of being manipulated. This stuff isn't science. It isn't rational. It's just cheap manipulation by people with influence who play games of power.

I really see government as organized crime. it's now operating at the level of neighborhood protection racket. "Hey, that's a nice business ya got there. It would be a shame if anything happened to it. Tell you what, you give me a little something, and I'll watch over you and make sure nothing bad happens. Understand?"

Well, I'm not afraid of global warming, I don't need protection, and I will not bow down before these con artists.

It’s not commonly mentioned but the methane is produced by an unusual type of bacteria, not by the cows and pigs. There are many ways to disrupt these parasites.

Not only are you correct, but:

There are huge areas of land in the world that will support cattle, but are not suitable for cultivation. So food of any kind will become more costly.

Add to that the insane bio fuel scam which has disrupted the grain markets and we are headed for food prices that will make life even more difficult for everyone, especially the poor.

Climate chief Lord Stern: give up meat to save the planet

Will we still be permitted milk and eggs, Lord Stern? And what will happen to all those beef cattle and frying chickens we can no longer eat? Do you plan to provide them with pasture and "free range" living, or maybe you plan to just let those species become extinct?

I could just imagine the cost of a sirloin on the black market, and the newly caused corruption. They would either tax the farmers to death, or outlaw raising beef and pork altogether. Idiots didn’t learn anything from prohibition.

Just because this guy’s body functions well on no protein from meat, it doesn’t follow that everyone else would too. My body needs meat protein, veggies just won’t do it for me. I’d die of a terminal headache if I didn’t eat some protein from meat every day.

Leftist envy is not about wanting something you have, it’s about destroying or taking away something you have no matter their opportunity to also have it. Most of them could buy an SUV, join a church, get married, have kids, buy a large house with a fireplace and green lawn in the suburbs, adopt a big dog, eat meat, etc., but what they actually want is pure evil: to destroy these things to keep you from having them.

Why do the vegans try to impose their ideals on us carnivores? I don’t see the reverse happening. I don’t care what they eat, or even if they eat at all.

Gonna bag a couple of does this evening. Make some jerky, and smoke some mignons.
