McDonnell has double-digit lead in Va. governor's race, Post poll says

Republican Robert McDonnell carries a double-digit lead over Democrat Creigh Deeds into the final week of the campaign for Virginia governor, according to a new Washington Post poll.

The Republican, briefly buffeted in the polls by voters' initial reaction to the publication of his 1989 graduate school thesis, has rebounded to big advantages on the top issues, particularly taxes, and is now seen as the more effective leader, more honest and more empathetic.

McDonnell is also buoyed by support outside of Northern Virginia, where he is currently outperforming all other top-of-the-ticket Republican candidates this decade. Statewide, McDonnell now leads Deeds among likely voters by a 55 to 44 percent margin. McDonnell, who narrowly defeated Deeds in the race for attorney general four years ago, has been above 50 percent in all four Post polls in the campaign....

McDonnell holds double-digit advantages when it comes to dealing with the economy (plus 17 percentage points), transportation (16 points), taxes (25 points) and has overtaken Deeds as the one more trusted to handle issues of special concern to women (7 points). On taxes, McDonnell has stretched his lead significantly, and now holds a better than 2 to 1 lead over Deeds among independent voters.

Deeds has said he would be willing to sign a tax increase to pay for road improvements if approved by a bipartisan majority in the General Assembly, a prospect opposed by 55 percent of likely voters, including a growing number outside of Northern Virginia. McDonnell and the Republican Governors Association have spent millions on what now appears to have been a devastating ad campaign about Deeds's stance-- and over his failure to clearly explain his position on the issue while answering questions from reporters following a debate in Fairfax in September

I like the subtle spin on this impending Democrat loss.

The thesis from Pat Roberson’s school caused a temporary fall in the polls but now he has rebounded.

No.

Actually, once they took him to task for being a Christian right winger, he went up in the polls.

WP trying to protect one of their treasured memes, “Christians are horrible public figures.”

ROFLMFAO!

Refresh my memory — wasn’t it WaPo that did their damndest to force the thesis issue down the voter’s throats?

“Briefly buffeted”. The sorry SOBs don’t have the integrity to admit it was their propaganda attempt gone wrong and apologize for it.

Don’t forget...there’s a “National Emergency” as dictated by the one. If there’s virulent outbreak of H1N1, the election could be postponed.

Why would Obama choose Norfolk to campaign for Deeds? It’s a military town and home of Pat Robert’s CBN. Not a Liberal bastion.

Anyone from NJ? Who is leading in the NJ Governor’s race? Last I heard, it is a tie and today I heard that there is a third candidate that is taking away from the Republican Is Christie his name?)

Not a Liberal bastion.

The City of Norfolk is. That's somewhat countered with surrounding localities like Virginia Beach (where Regent and CBN are located).

But the City of Norfolk is a democratic stronghold.

You and me both. However, the latest poll shows Corzine with a comfortable lead. It now all comes down to New Jersey-ans getting out to vote and not wasting that vote on Daggett!

No military in their right minds lives in Norfolk. They all live in Va Beach, Chesapeake or on the peninsula.

High minority population. Attempt to rally their base.

What really cracks me up about this deals with the big todo over the thesis, his attending Regent, and the allegation he is a clone of Robertson. Yet yesterday Deeds was all over Hampton Roads politicking from the pulpits of 11 Baptist churches.

I do laugh at the concept of a “black” church. I’ve never seen one. The church we attend is white, and I should know, I helped paint it. My daughter often joins a friend of hers for the Youth Group Bible study at a local Baptist Church, but that church is red.

A woman I know through my daughter called me today about something going on at their church next month. She brought up the subject of Deeds being in the churches yesterday and how wrong it was. Her husband is the Minister at their church, which has a congregation that is mostly black and hispanic. Her attitude was “I’m black, but I’m not stupid, and I don’t want anyone politicking when they should be praising the Lord.” She was totally fit to be tied about it.

ROFLOL! This must be really bugging the Washington Post — I am enjoying every minute of seeing the Post crying since it looks like purple is turning Red for Governor. I cannot wait until election night and see the anchors ignore VA a state that went for ZERO.

“”””Deeds has said he would be willing to sign a tax increase to pay for road improvements if approved by a bipartisan majority in the General Assembly””””

Why do these F’nn dems continue to build roads when they want to tax you to death to drive on them???????????? Plus all the eco damage that cars do? The dems should be closing down roads instead of building them!!!

But the City of Norfolk is a democratic stronghold

I would have expected Obama to campaign in downtown Portsmouth where most of his lowlife constituents congregate.
