Along a curve of desert highway near the gated home of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, mechanic Bill Johnson is struggling to keep his checkbook balanced.
With Nevada's economy poisoned by recession and the nation's highest foreclosure and bankruptcy rates, business at Johnson's boat-repair shop has nose-dived 40 percent since last year. He cannot afford health insurance, and his sewer bill jumped to $875 a year.
"I really have to pose a question: Harry, what have you done for me lately?" asks Johnson, who vows to vote against Reid and other incumbents unless health care is made affordable.
Johnson's exasperation demonstrates the problems Reid faces as he runs for a fifth term next year in a political climate made treacherous by Nevada's economic turmoil and his high-profile role in pushing President Barack Obama's agenda.
Never a particularly beloved figure in Nevada despite a public career that dates to the 1960s, Reid has been derided as out of touch with Main Street and out of step with Nevada's moderate politics. Many Republicans consider him one of the most vulnerable incumbents on Capitol Hill.
A veteran of close elections, Reid is leaving nothing to chance. He is already airing TV ads and is about halfway to his goal of raising $25 million for the race, an unprecedented amount for Nevada. He raised $7 million in 2004.

Earlier this month, a voter survey published in the Las Vegas Review-Journal, conducted by Mason-Dixon Polling & Research Inc., found Reid trailing both Republicans in potential matchups

If he wins, you can pretty much bet it was fixed.
Interesting article. This is exactly the scenario that led to Tom Daschle’s demise back in 2004. Nevada voters aren’t happy with the “Beltway” version of Harry Reid, and would rather have a Senator who spent more time looking out for his own state’s interests and less time pushing a leftist agenda with its roots in New York City, Chicago and Los Angeles.
I wonder how the White House will distance itself from this loss?
Get the popcorn.....2010 is going to be interesting!

Twenty-five million smackers will buy you a LOT of machine politics and crooked votes.
I wonder where all that dough is coming from. No, actually, I don’t. Unions, lawyers, teachers... and foreigners.
Tom Daschle
Always wondered if Reid was the inspiration for the corrupt Nevada Senator in "Godfather II".
ACORN/SEIU will be involved big, BIG TIME!.
The senator in the Godfather movie had an awful grating voice just like Harry.
Now that he is down in polls he will be more desperate and probably hurl out some of the most vile hateful twisted rhetoric ever. I hope his opponents are prepared.
I pray they vote him out.
Arlan giving Harry some advice:
....”pssst hey Harry! Just do what I did - jump to the other side before it’s too late.”
I read the other day where Dirty Harry is going to run a scorched earth campaign against whom ever gets the nomination.
So Nevada could have a choice between a good-looking woman and a sourpuss with a face that scares children?
He will lose the woman's vote bigtime if he tries this against Sue Lowden. And we all know a RAT cant win without the female vote.
When the State of Nevada has their elections, they should do it county by county....maybe two or three at a time and check every voter. It would cost more but voting is the most important thing we have in this country and it would be worth the cost.
Ah but in the next stimulus bill Reid will put in a million dollar bonus for every person in Nevada who votes for him.
Just letting Freepers know that there will be a dumptruck full of dirt unloading about Reid and it ain’t pretty.
Well, I don't doubt that Reid is in trouble with the voters, but I'll bet they had to go a long way to find a quote like that. Business is down, taxes are up, and this guy wants Reid to pass Obamacare?
I hope there aren't too many deluded souls like that in his electorate.
