Before Glenn Beck started his new show on Fox News in January, he sat down with Roger Ailes, the network's chief executive, to make sure they were on the same page.
"I wanted to meet with Roger and tell him, 'You may not want to put me on the air. I believe we are in dire trouble, and I will never shut up,' " said the conservative radio host.
But before Beck could say anything, Ailes shared a message of his own: The country faced tough times, he said, and Fox News was one of the only news outlets willing to challenge the new administration.
"I see this as the Alamo," Ailes said, according to Beck. "If I just had somebody who was willing to sit on the other side of the camera until the last shot is fired, we'd be fine."
That couldn't have suited Beck more. In making the jump to the top-rated cable news channel from HLN, where he had a show for two years, he hoped to alert more people to one of his consuming fears: that the government's handling of the economic crisis is ushering in an era of socialism.
"Look in your rear-view mirror; we just passed France," he said. "I think our country is on the verge of disintegration."
Beck's indignant critiques of the Obama administration and gloomy outlook on the nation's financial health have found near-instant resonance. His eponymous 2 p.m. PST program averaged nearly 2.2 million viewers last month -- double the number the time slot attracted the previous February and a remarkable amount for the afternoon. That made "Glenn Beck" the third most-watched program in all of cable news for the month, after Bill O'Reilly's and Sean Hannity's evening shows.

out living Obummer will suit me
I’ve done something I never did before. I have set aside time every day to watch a news show. Beck is clearly the best one out there right now. He puts O’Really to shame and is faster on the uptake than Limbaugh.
Truth be told, FOX was hitting “ratings gold” long before the WH declared their so-called war on it.
Truth is, if Beck had a primetime spot, he'd probably be beating O'Reilly. However, I think he likes the idea that he's doing so well in the 5 o'clock spot, seems like he enjoys the challenge that the time slot brings.
He pokes at Obozo with a sharp stick daily.
Ailes is a risk-taker, so it’s not surprising he brought Beck on board even after Beck warned him about his style.
Rush Limbaugh has an entirely different style than Beck. Rush is on the cutting edge in different ways. I think it’s great to have both of them in our corner.
Telling the truth and have many millions of citizens believe you is the best revenge against the liars in D.C.
“He puts OReally to shame”
You can say that again! Hey, have you noticed that when Glenn is on O’Reilly’s show, Bill consistantly tries to put Glenn down. Bill makes jokes at Glenn’s expense when Glenn is trying to be serious about what is happening.
Methinks Bill is jealous of Glenn’s success!! But please O’Reilly put your petty jealousy aside and let Glenn talk - we need more and more people to hear Glenn talk about what is really happening to our country.
I wonder if Ailes delivered the same message to Axelrod last month when Axelrod tried to make him an offer he couldn't refuse...
Having him is this time slot is a good thing. If he were in the later slots, the mood would just not be right. Also, BOR and Sean can have Beck on to satisfy their growing audience's interest. And Beck is always intellectually hilarious and razor sharp. Which makes a mental midget like O’Reilly look puny indeed.
This whole combination is brilliant and it is obvious why ObaMao is so nervous that their voices are being heard. And FOX backs their claims with hard facts and proof. Where the White House only uses words and rhetoric to claim that Fox is lying. In return, FOX hits back with more proof and makes ObaMao and his minions look like the complete liars they are.
Thank GOD that we have these modern patriots on our side!
Very much so. FReepers have a tendency to want some conservative speakers to shut up and other to dominate. We need them all and more IMO.
This article is OLD; from back in March. The 2.2 million figure was a clue...Beck has been around 3 million (give or take) for quite a while, and he has been beating Hannity consistently over the past few weeks.
speculation on obammy’s longevity will get you a discussion with some federal goon.
But you know the secret service is working a lot of overtime.
Amen.
This is great. What you said is true, and eventually, BOR will drop his pandering to moderates and Populists, realizing the vast success that Beck has had fostering Conservatism. I believe even BOR will join the club along with Sean, Rush and Beck.
In other words, BOR is all about BOR and can’t stand someone else upstaging him.
I love Rush and try to catch his program as often as I can. Here’s how I would describe the difference between Rush and Beck though. Rush reads from his stack of stuff. Beck is creating that stack of stuff.
What's more interesting is the 5pm ET hour is known in the television business as the "vast television wasteland". Hannity's format to me is too laid-back, plus I don't like that segment called the "Great American Panel" which is nothing more than an excuse to invite his brain-dead liberal pals on to spout their nonsense.
Beck would kill BOR and Hannity in the 7:00PM slot.
While Glenn Beck is the investigative journalist. Plus, Beck comes from a different generation of radio listeners. Rush might have pioneered talk radio, but Beck is the future.
LOLOL, when I think I rate, I will worry
Beck is nothing short of genius and has expressive ability like few people in this business. BOR tried to debate him and put him down, but Beck ripped BOR a new orifice from which to spew his Populist rhetoric.
Other than that, I suspect that BOR won't try cutting Beck to shreds again anytime soon. Because BOR is still bleeding profusely from his self inflicted wounds after his latest attempt.
Glenn doesn't even take himself seriously most of the time, on his radio show especially. O'Reilly tries to work at Beck's level, but it doesn't translate well because O'Reilly is old enough to be Beck's dad.
BOR greatly fears Beck, but BOR has a very strong influence at FOX. Moving Greta would raise cheers among their viewers I'm sure.
Plus, Beck doesn’t hide his emotions, and he’s cried on camera several times already. I’ve talked to some who say they feel uneasy when he does, and I say to them it’s because he’s passionate about his believes and cares deeply about this country. I cry for this nation, every day, deep down inside.

Some of Hannity's segments need work. His 'Liberal Translation' bits aren't terribly clever or funny. Rush does a much better job with that sort of thing. Still, I'd rather watch Hannity than O'Reilly.
Eventually, the ratings war will force BOR to start taking a stronger position on the side of Conservatism. Which, in all truth seems like an unnatural philosophy for BOR.
I saw that, but I took it to be a misprint for Oct 26. But it is for sure on the website today at the LA Times.
Can you imagine the heartburn at the whitehouse over Beck?
The truth will set you free.
Still.
Beck is a must-watch. He’s been on fire lately. Thank goodness for DVR’s.
bttt
That right there oughta tell you that this article is pure B.S. Afterall, Mr. Obamur has decreed that Fox isn't really a news outlet! /s
Maybe I ought to give Blowreilly the benefit of the doubt about the kidding part......but I don’t wanna.:).....I love Glenn’s red phone, carrier pigeons and his zany rants. Some have suggested that FoxNews switch Blowreilly and Beck’s time slots. Now that would be GREAT! On the other hand, Glenn is bringing viewers in droves for his time slot and has the competition with a wad in their drawers and I’m lovin’ it!
Their content is different but their all knowing delivery is the same.
Exactly the same. They may have been separated at birth.
Want even higher ratings, Fox News? Get rid of Schmuck Smith and move Beck to the 7 p.m. time slot. I know I would be able to watch it more at 7 p.m. as opposed to 5 p.m. when some people are just getting off work ... those that have jobs, that is.
None the less, I enjoy his show and I believe he is saying things the rest of us have been trying to get into broader circulation for a LONG time now.
In times of universal deceit, telling the truth will be a revolutionary act.
George Orwell.
“I think he likes the idea that he’s doing so well in the 5 o’clock spot”
No one that works for a living can watch it and the re run at 11 is too late to stay awake for.
My thoughts exactly. Obviously, Ailes told Axelrod where to ‘step off’. Good for him, good for us.
‘since losing colmes’, made me laugh out loud.
It wasn’t a loss, it was a blessing Colmes is gone.
Viewers had been calling for it for a year!
Marc Lamont Hill, too.
Hopefully they will finally hear us on Shepherd Smith too.
They have this awesome new invention called the DVR....
The day he dressed the guy watching the phone in a Mao suit, was another stroke of genius. As was his “secret informer” call leaking the possible appointment of Anita Dunn’s husband to the WH.
Rush is the best at analysis with informaton he has. That’s why he’s been on top for so long. And he always has the right answer ready and waiting.
Both Rush and Beck are carrying water for conservatives right now, so we can celebrate having both of them.
O'Reilly is 14 1/2 years older than Beck so you are technically correct.
“They have this awesome new invention called the DVR.... “
what’s that?
