Spain Jobless Rate Stays At 17.9%

Spain's unemployment rate is the highest in the EU

Spain's unemployment rate has remained at 17.9% in the third quarter, the highest in the European Union.

The number of jobless now stands at 4.1 million, the country's statistics agency said.

The Spanish unemployment rate had risen for the previous eight quarters after its construction and debt-fuelled economic boom ended suddenly.

Separately, a survey showed German business confidence rose for a seventh consecutive month in October.

One of the problems is that their unemployment is so generous most Spaniards are simply regarding it as a vacation and won’t do anything until it runs out. I was there last week, and most lower level jobs (restaurant, construction labor, etc.) seem to be held by Latin American immigrants, so I guess Spanish young people aren’t feeling really desperate yet.

However, if they did, the problem is that the job market has contracted there, mostly because of the “green jobs” program, combined with less US trade because of the strength of the Euro, so I’m not sure what kind of jobs they could find even if they did want to work.

The Socialists in Spain were elected after the train bombing in Madrid. They threw out the free market government that supported the war in Iraq. They got what they wished for. Wonder now if they regret it?

Hell, even red jobs promotion in the Soviet Union did better than green jobs promotion in Spain!

As usual when the socialists run out of other people money then all their welfare programs will collapse including the generous unemployment benefits.

Yes, they’re a little nervous now because everybody knows that once Zapatero can’t get anymore from the “wealthy” there’s nothing left. Of course, “wealthy” referst to everybody but the politicians, who ironically are the genuinely are wealthy since government is now the only source of well-paying jobs.

Hey Juan! How’s that green economy doing for you? Wind and sunlight don’t buy a whole lot of rice and beans does it?

Spain is setting the bar high, but I have faith that the One can bring the U.S. down to eurosocialist norms.

Um.

If you measure unemployment like we USED to, we ourselves have 16%+ unemployment.
