Actually Gingrich supporting candidates(no matter how vile) to fill Congress, implies that he’ll make a run in 2012 for President. At the very least he’s thinking about it. This is what he did prior to 94’ and the ‘Contract with America’ that catapulted him into House Leadership. He’s building bridges one trestle at a time.

I don’t think that’s a fair assessment of what he said. What I walked away with after listening to both is that Newt, being an outsider, didn’t want to second guess the decision of the local party. As an outsider, isn’t that a legitimate statement?

This is a seat for the United States Congress, this is not for mayor of a small town. Newt Gingrich seems to think that electing leftists will give us a conservative majority.

I am not sure how that would work. Gingrich is very wrong on this one.

There is also an election in California’s 10th district, a real conservative. I bet that person is being ignored by the party that is pouring funds and staff to the Scuzzy lady. Thats the RINO MO.

I thought his reasoning made sense if your goal is to pick a winner.

However, if you are trying to change things up, find and elect candidates that are more closely aligned with a value that Dede, clearly does not represent, then you would have to pick Doug.

Dede needs to be liked. People who need to be like have no core value other than to seek out the greatest number of people who will fulfill her need to be liked and validate her emotions.

Doug isn’t so much a “need to be liked guy” as he is a man who sees the need for change to core values of a conservative platform.

Doug will stand up and vote as a conservative and deliver.

I've stayed off these threads because I have no idea who any of these candidates are, and I know nothing of the district.

Transcript from HotAir:

Gingrich:

"Lets just start with, she is the nominee of the local party, my bias is to be for the nominee of the local party, and I don't second guess the local party,

she has signed a no tax increase pledge,

she is endorsed by the National Rifle Association,

she has come out against Cap and Trade, [crosstalk]

she is opposed to the Obama Health Care plan,

she will vote for John Boehner instead of Nancy Pelosi.

All of those things together make her it seems to me, a legitimate, authentic, Republican nominee. In addition, the last poll that came out yesterday, she is well ahead of, and she is much more likely to beat the Democrat than Hoffman because

Hoffman doesn't live in the district, he's never won an election in the district,

she represents the biggest county in the district, she actually knows the local issues,

and Hoffman has says publicly he doesn't know the local issues..

So I just think it is a mistake for the Conservative movement, to think splitting in the special elections is a smart idea, if we give that seat to the Democrats, shame on us...

Is this true?

The big lie here is that somehow Scozzafava somehow represents the views of the locals in the 23rd District. She doesn't.

This is what conservatives need to realize: Not only have Republican leaders become completely unprincipled, the political process they have created in no way represents We the People.

In recent months we've seen polling that shows that there are more self-identified conservatives in EVERY state in the Union than self-identified liberals. And so it is obvious to those who think about it that if those conservative views are not being carried into actual conservative policies politically, the massive failure lies with the party that has been claiming to be conservative but is not.

I repeat: the Republican Party is a failed party.

Here’s Scozzafava accepting her Margaret Sanger Award. It’s only two minutes long, and there are two moments that stick out. First, she mentions that she served on the board of Planned Parenthood when she first came to the North Country—shades of Howard Dean! Alittle over a minute after that she speaks, with not a trace of irony, about every individual human having their own rights. Apparently the right to not be chopped up by Dede’s crew and thrown in the garbage is not on the list.

How much was coming out of the GOP in 1974-1976?

And what was the result of Reagan pushing principled conservatism in the GOP instead of leaving?

I’m not confirming the NRA thing (I haven’t looked it up yet) but keep in mind the NRA is happy to endorse libs if they have a pro-gun record. For example, they gave Judy “Blagojevich in a dress” Baar Topinka their endorsement for governor here in Illinois because she is 100% pro-2nd Amendment..odd for a Chicago pol, but there it was.

Also, about the no-tax-no-Obamacare positions, assuming they're true...if you were the sort of person who has sat on the board of history's foremost killer of small children and received an award from them for your excellent help and potential voters in conservative upstate New York are angry about taxes and socialized medicine, would you consider lying to them?

No Person shall be a Representative who shall not have attained to the Age of twenty five Years, and been seven Years a Citizen of the United States, and who shall not, when elected, be an Inhabitant of that State in which he shall be chosen. (Article I, Section 2)

Apparently, he merely has to live in the State in which he is running, not the actual district. Personally, if I were running, I would try to make sure I lived in the district.

I'm speaking as an outsider, but it seems to me the real crux of the issue with Scozzafava is her pro-abortion position.

If that's the case, her detractors should simply say "I won't vote for a pro-abortion candidate."

Newt brings up, what I think is, an important point. I've always respected the candidate selection process within the Republican party because it IS LOCAL. It is vastly more representative than the "top down" strategy employed by the Democrats. (Not withstanding presidential primaries!)

Is the tea party movement thwarting the will of the local citizenry? I can't answer that, but it is a concern.

Are we, in our fervor for better representation, engaging in a faulty strategy?

I thought his reasoning made sense if your goal is to pick a winner.

Turn that thought around to the Democratic Party. The Won who was elected was the most likely to be elected and look what they got instead...a Communist masquerading as a Democrat.

This election is important in publicizing the facts that a party label is not necessarily the truth. Politics has alwasys been on the shady side of the truth, but nowadays lying appears to be condoned for the sake of winning.

Hm, he was talking out of the other side of his mouth back in April.

WALLACE: Let me get to the subject that we actually invited you both here for, and that’s to talk about the future of the Republican Party and how you rebrand yourself.

Mr. Gingrich, you said the other day that you see the real possibility that some conservatives will split off from the GOP and form a third party by 2012. I know that nobody would ever accuse you of this, but are you just being provocative?

GINGRICH: No, I’m trying to say very clearly, particularly to those Republicans who continue to insist, for example, on earmarks, continue to insist that they like big spending, continue to insist that they don’t have to pay any attention to the great vast majority of Republicans, that people are not trapped into a — into a system.
