Forgive me in advance for fawning, but Michelle Obama is the coolest first lady ever. She clinched it for me this week by jumping double Dutch on the South Lawn as part of a “healthy kids fair.”
The scene underscored my impression of the first lady as utterly unencumbered by convention. She seems to feel free — free enough to loosen up and laugh a little, free enough to let her inner child peek through the veil of parenthood, free enough to be herself. ..."
I could pile on platitudes here about her professional accomplishments, or explore to what degree she is redefining the role of women, or predict how she will be viewed by historians in the pantheon of her predecessors. I could, but I won’t. That’s not my bailiwick.

Don't mean to pick solely on Michelle here. If you want to dig at payoffs to Members of Congress, one of the places you have to look is the family. Michelle's arrangement was perfectly legal, and rather common in our higher political circles. You can't put a Member of Congress on retainer any more, and it's increasingly difficult to slip big bucks under the table. But you can hire or throw business to the spouse.

Really? What would those accomplishments be, Mr. Blow? Having her salary double because her husband is elected to the Senate? Having her employer rake in hundreds of thousands of dollars in earmarks as a result of legislation by her husband?
But I'm thinking that her biggest accomplishment was in saving her employer so much money by codifying and instituting procedures to turf poor, non-paying patients to the nearby community hospitals and clinics.
There was one story of a kid who nearly had his lips ripped off by a pit bull, and instituting HER policies, gave the kid tylenol, a shot of morphine and told his mother to follow up at Cook County hospital in a week. They took an hour bus ride across town to another hospital, arriving at 0500 and the kid was admitted and taken directly into surgery. (Read it here at the Chicago Tribune)

Charles Blow - From one black man to another, you’re a nitwit. “Redefining the role of women”??? WTF? Michelle has been doing NOTHING but acting like some perfect caricature of an ideal house wife. She’s supposed to be a Harvard educated lawyer. Does she (or Barack for that matter) have a single individual innovative idea of her own? I have’nt seen it.
