Representative Kennedy vs. the Church

Debate continues to rage over abortion coverage in all of the health care reform bills. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops have made it clear that they cannot and will not support any proposal that includes abortion coverage.

Responding to the Bishops, Representative Patrick Kennedy (D-RI) recently slammed the Church, saying that it was fanning “the flames of dissent and discord,” by opposing the health care reform bills under consideration unless they are amended to explicity prohibit abortion funding.

“I can’t understand for the life of me how the Catholic Church could be against the biggest social justice issue of our time, where the very dignity of the human person is being respected by the fact that we’re caring and giving health care to the human person - that right now we have 50 million people who are uninsured,” Kennedy told CNSNews.com. “You mean to tell me the Catholic Church is going to be denying those people life-saving health care? I thought they were pro-life?” said Kennedy. “If the church is pro-life, then they ought to be for health care reform because it’s going to provide health care that are going to keep people alive. So this is an absolute red herring and I don’t think that it does anything but to fan the flames of dissent and discord and I don’t think it’s productive at all.”

That provoked a response from his bishop, Providence Bishop Thomas J. Tobin.

“Congressman Patrick Kennedy’s statement about the Catholic Church’s position on health care reform is irresponsible and ignorant of the facts,” said Bishop Tobin. “As I wrote to Congressman Kennedy and other members of the Rhode Island Congressional Delegation recently, the Bishops of the United States are indeed in favor of comprehensive health care reform and have been for many years. But we are adamantly opposed to health care legislation that threatens the life of unborn children, requires taxpayers to pay for abortion, rations health care, or compromises the conscience of individuals.”

“Congressman Kennedy continues to be a disappointment to the Catholic Church and to the citizens of the State of Rhode Island. I believe the Congressman owes us an apology for his irresponsible comments. It is my fervent hope and prayer that he will find a way to provide more effective and morally responsible leadership for our state,” Tobin added.

Write to Rep. Patrick Kennedy

With Ted barely in the ground, the Church having bent over backwards to go against church policy to give him a public Catholic funeral, and this mindless punk is already ranting against the Church in favor of abortion and socialism?
Have they no shame?

How are we supposed to know if this habitual drug abuser is under the influence, or not? Drug addicts are known liars. ANYTHING he says should be dismissed.

Yeah, and Bishop Tobin and five Cardinals will be at his funeral singing his praises just like they did for arch-arbortionist Teddy.

The US Conference of Catholic Bishops is run by former Democrat party operatives who will ignore any evil if it will hurt their Democrat politician partners. The bishops are too naive and are also big Democrat sympathizers, totally out of touch with their church membership.

Putting himself before God. No wonder he can’t understand.

To these Democratic Catholic politicians, priority goes to Democratic party dogma first, rather than Catholic teaching. They can’t be bothered with Catholic teaching on abortion or marriage.

Some members of the Kennedy clan, like this young House Representative, have excommunicated themselves. According to the article, the bishop has already provided Patrick with a definition of Catholic teachings on the topic. He has chosen to ignore these and, in so doing, excommunicated himself. (excommunication latae sentitae).

WHICH ONE????

Well, according to Howie Carr, he is distinguished by his outstanding stupidity, even by Kennedy standards -- yes, he's the stupidest one! Clear it up for ya? ;-)

There’s no such thing as stupidity among New Englanders unless one is a non-New Englander. John Quincy Adams would be appalled at what the place has become.

At least half of the church membership is also committed to “democracy” with a capital “D”.

I believe you meant to say "carpet bagger" ;-) We have one here in NY. Her name is Hillary Clinton. And there are others in the wings.

John Quincy Adams would be appalled at what the place has become.

The Founding Fathers would all be appalled at how their successors have tinkered with the language of the Constitution to manipulate to suit their purposes. Throughout history, some countries have risen to power and then collapsed under the weight of legislation. Our nation peaked 60+ years ago. The last great generation were those who served in WWII. It's been downhill since then.

Yes,I know.It was a rhetorical question posed to point out the worthlessness...and interchangeability...of an entire generation of Kennedys.

You obviously don’t know anything about Bishop Tobin. He is not cut from the same cloth as Cardinal O’Malley (Boston), thank goodness!

“...the Church having bent over backwards to go against church policy...”

....which is exactly why Pelosi, the Kennedys, and all the rest of the godless Democrats do not respect the Catholic Church.

Let me know if Tobin ever shows up at a ceremony/dinner/whatever with Kennedy. Too many of these bishops condemn abortion and then wine and dine with the baby killers.
