GOP's Dede Scozzafava faces cash crunch
Politico ^ | October 14, 2009 | JOSH KRAUSHAAR

Posted on 10/24/2009 11:39:23 AM PDT by Steelers6

Dede Scozzafava, the GOP nominee in a key upcoming House special election, is running dangerously low on campaign cash, according to several GOP sources familiar with her spending and fundraising.

While Scozzafava’s official fundraising numbers will not be known until next Thursday, the third-quarter Federal Election Commission reporting deadline, the GOP sources acknowledged to POLITICO that she’s unable to compete financially with her two opponents.

Scozzafava supporters blame her cash crunch on the Washington Republican establishment, which they contend has not embraced her campaign enthusiastically. They specifically point to Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele, whose committee has been virtually absent from the race and hasn’t yet donated any money, with just weeks to go before the Nov. 3 special election.

“Chairman Steele hasn’t put up a cent, not even the obligatory $5,000,” said a New York-based GOP operative. “There’s been no support from the RNC. Democrats are going all out for this race. Everyone’s in the same direction.”

Democratic nominee Bill Owens is outspending Scozzafava on television advertising by a nearly 12-1 ratio, according to a media buy database provided by a Republican operative tracking the race.

She’s also being outspent in the sprawling district by Conservative Party nominee Doug Hoffman, the third-party candidate who has peeled off conservative support from the moderate state assemblywoman. Scozzafava has drawn fire from the right over her support for abortion rights and gay marriage, and the GOP schism over her candidacy is reflected in her weak fundraising.

Scozzafava’s insufficient resources have left her unable to defend against attacks that are coming on all sides — from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee to the conservative Club for Growth organization, which is backing Hoffman.

Scozzafava appears to have spent only $26,000 so far on television advertising, and she pulled down her television buy last week in the vote-rich Syracuse media market, where she’s hardly known. She’s currently up with only a small $7,965 television buy in her home base of Watertown.

By contrast, Owens has spent $303,000 on television ads, and Hoffman has spent $124,000 on TV advertising alone, according to the media buy database.

Scozzafava’s campaign acknowledges that it’s been struggling to raise money for the upstate New York seat, and it hasn’t been able to bank enough to mount a full-fledged media blitz introducing her to voters.

“Dede is in position to win this campaign. Having the necessary resources and support are critical,” said Scozzafava spokesman Matthew Burns, citing endorsements from the National Rifle Association and the state’s largest teachers union. “Her campaign continues to generate widespread support. We are hopeful that our supporters will continue to help the fight through the finish.”

She has been endorsed by the NRA, the NRA needs to look at 3rd party candidates when the major party candidates are no good.

GOP's Dede Scozzafava faces cash crunch

Aww, gee, darn, that is a shame.

She is worse than any RINO that has ever run before. I hope she loses to the conservative big time.

Maybe if she had run as a Demorat she would have faired better, maybe BHO would have come to campaign for her.

No need to say more. Across the country there is no more un-American and evil groups than teacher’s unions.

RINO is too soft a word for this lady.

Hee Hee. If (I hope “when”) Sarah throws her hat in the ring again, lack of campaign money will not be a problem for her! Just wait. She’ll get record amounts of donations and crush her opponent at the polls. Gee I hate waiting...sigh.

Appears poor Mike can't get a break. According to many of the posts here, you'd believe he hand picked her, funded her campaign, and is secretly sleeping with her.

Don’t blame the national party, you RINO tards. They backed here, and they sent money.

Blame yourself. You can’t really expect a lot of money support if you hand pick a flaming liberal abortionist gay-loving big union supporter who works for the Albany Machine.

The Democrat is doing very well by advertising that she is to the left of him. And that’s true.

As for Steele, the RNC doesn’t normally send in cash. That’s the other guys who support congresscritters—I never can remember their initials.

But Steele came out two or three times in the past couple of weeks saying that he just loved pro-abortion Republican candidates. So they were only obliging him, they might argue.

I would not even call her a RINO, more like a slightly conservative Dem - perhaps in the mold of Truman.

This pro-abort pro-gay-marriage union-lover Dede is to the left of Truman. (Who’d be about where McCain is politically were he around today).

I hope all who are complaining about RNC support for RINOs take heed — they arent helping her out!! So she is sinking on her own and no RNC life raft.

The NRA needs better criteria for endorsements. Gillibrand is an example of that.

If a politician says they are pro-gun, thats nice, but when they also support anti-gun groups with tax dollars that should count against them.

Someone who funnels taxdollars to ACORN, Planned Parenthood, National Education Association and other leftwing (all anti-gun too) can still get their endorsement?
