Obama's misguided Fox hunt
Los Angeles Times / latimes.com ^ | October 23, 2009 | 5:43 p.m. | By Tim Rutten

One of the lessons most people carry away from the schoolyard is that picking an avoidable quarrel with somebody who really likes to fight generally is a losing proposition.

It's too bad nobody reminded the Obama administration of that before it launched into its ill-advised campaign against Fox News. First of all, even though the White House is right on the merits when it describes Fox News as operating mainly as a surrogate for the Republican Party, making an issue of that fact is a tactical mistake.

Fox News' core audience is a cadre of true believers whose regard for their network of choice simply will be vindicated by criticism from the administration. Glenn Beck -- less a commentator than a candidate for a 72-hour psychiatric hold -- and Sean Hannity -- the sort of bully you can find at the end of every Irish bar from South Boston to Outer Richmond -- couldn't buy the kind of publicity the White House has handed them gratis.

Racist and a false stereotype.

I'm of Irish stock, and anyone who dares call me a bully they'd better steer clear of me if they know what's good for 'em.

If Obama had an cajones, he’d go on the Glenn Beck show. If he talks with BOR, it will be a waste of time. If he talks with Hannity, he will bully him.

Obviously, asking tough questions of the Dear Leader makes them a Republican shill. Only those who fellate the TOTUS-reader are “real journalists.”

Outside of Fox, there is no journalism, just cheer squads and water carriers.

As the Project for Excellence in Journalism’s Tom Rosenstiel pointed out this week, the network’s star attraction, O’Reilly, “has around 3.5 million people watching each night, or about 1% of American adults. That would get you canceled on broadcast television. The three nightly [network] newscasts have about 20 million viewers.”

Lumps all three networks together?

Overlooks who are the actual viewers and do they really vote.

On, on on -

Murdoch's cable news operation may cast an outsized shadow inside the politically preoccupied Beltway, but in the rest of the country, it's at best a wispy presence.

3x the viewers of CNN, the next closest competitor, is a wispy presence? Sounds like wishful thinking at best, but more like utter delusion or outright lie.

As if more viewers in Southern California than the LA Times has readers is "wispy".

Why would any intelligent person pay attention to anything printed in the LA Times? After all, they're operating mainly as a surrogate for the DemocraticCommunist Party. Their readers are largely true believers who are immune to all reason and fact.

See, it's fun to make baseless assertions without the need to back them up, isn't it? I can pretend that I'm a writer for the LA Times!

I believe they can hold up their end without help from the LA Times, thanks but no thanks.

Good point. It appears to be okay to stereotype the Irish and Anglo Saxons without recourse.

Los Angeles Times is still the organization that cheated on its postage and lied to its advertisers about readership so they could raise advertising rates.

They are certainly in no position to raise questions about FOX' intentions indoing business, or to insult those of us who remember them as the lieing, cheating, lowdown, poorboxrobbin', ripoffartist, smarmy THIEVES that they are.

Making a HUGE issue of disagreeing with FOX NEWS allowed the democrats and nobama to make laws behind Locked doors, not allowing Republicans inside, without anyone noticing, until after the fact. NOW WHAT DO WE DO. Remember the democrats did the same thing during the clinton administration..this is their MO...we should learn from it and disallow them that sneaky privilege again. Our republican elected should be aware of this and remain, always on their toes, so it doesn’t happen again. The democrats are sneaky..and the repulicans should know this by now...I do...and I’m not on the elected payroll.

Most excellent observation!

Likewise the paid subscriptions for LA Times was 723,000 as of March 09 - far less than any of FNC prime time program viewers
