DENVER The mother of the 6-year-old boy once feared missing inside a runaway helium balloon admitted the whole saga was a hoax, according to court documents released Friday.
Mayumi Heene told sheriff's deputies that she and her husband Richard "knew all along that Falcon was hiding in the residence" in Fort Collins, according to an affidavit used to get a search warrant for the home.

The two of them have mental problems. I hope they get the help they need. I keep saying at least they didn’t put Falcon in there for their stunt. That would have been murderous neglect.
He'll still be appalled. He'll just be appalled that his wife ratted him out.
It would make them more marketable? hahah. tell their kids to lie! but then, they are descended from aliens, she said. maybe they have different core beliefs.
They are a matched set. I hope the kids get some help.
His lawyer is saying she does not speak much English and did she confess while under arrest? You have to clutch at straws when the perps start to confess.
Who is writing the rescue bill?
She had command of the language. What bunk!
the public figured it out before law enforcement.
Obviously. Law enforcement is known for tracking things down when they don’t suspect anything.
Wake up, FRiend. The cops have to go on more than just common sense in building a prosecution. There would be no confession unless the cops were pursuing it...
Law enforcement figured it out the same time the public did. The sheriff later admitted they had misled the media about that to make it easier to investigate the family. Seems Papa Heene was very helpful while he thought police still believed him. During the period while the Sheriff was still indicating he didn’t think it was a hoax, they lured Papa down to the station and then went into the house to execute a search warrant and try to persuade Mama to go to a safe house with the kids.
Looks like trouble in Paradise...They each have their own Attorney. She’s cooperating and he is defiant.
She had been previously been encouraged to consider shelter... Next Reality Show: Divorce Court.
I hope the kids have a court-appointed lawyer of their own.
“The cops have to go on more than just common sense in building a prosecution.:
Law enforcement sucks. And that’s because the people involved in it suck....
As the wife of a LEO who takes his oath to enforce the Constitution seriously, I take exception to your statement. Of course there are bad cops. There are bad everything. But I think these guys understood the mentality of the nut they had had on their hands and led him down the primrose path to his own demise. At least I hope so for the sake of his wife and kids.
Not if the DNC lines up behind him.
Lol
yeah dat.
...at least they didnt put Falcon in there for their stunt.
&&&
If they had put that kid in there, there is no way that balloon could have gone up into the air.
Tell it, sister! Most cops are great guys. I get so sick of the small crowd here on FR that likes to jump on them. Makes me wonder what their problem is.
Sounds like revisionist damage-control from the Sheriff to me... "I knew it all along, I just pretended I was dumb." Uh, yeah.
Their actions during that time period were consistent with what he said. I really doubt the Sheriff is a moron, and it was apparently pretty obvious to everyone who saw the first media interview that the parents were lying and the kids were nervous and confused about what they were supposed to say.
It does seems that she and the children should be in some sort of safe house right now. Here are the remarks of a prior collaborator:
...Barbara Slusser, a friend and fellow storm chaser, said she stopped collaborating with Mr Heane because he kept bringing his young children on expeditions, even one into the eye of Hurricane Gustav.
She said he had an explosive personality, once trying to stuff toilet paper down her throat during an argument.
Mr Heene said on Sunday the saga has become convoluted.

...shoulda gone with the 'Jiffy Pop' defense. :o)
Sorry, but I know lots of cops and NONE of them are good guys. I am NOT friends with any of them and wouldn’t trust anything any of them said, even under oath.
That said, the cops are right about this fruitcake family.
How did they expect it to end? They had to know the balloon would be followed to the ground, what was step two?
Step 1 - Fake boy in balloon story
Step 2 -
Step 3 - Profit.
What? I don’t “hope they get the help they need”. The parents aren’t sick. The dad’s a sociopath, not a victim. And the network was in it from the inception and should be threatened with loss of its broadcast license.
Reid. The Senate has voted to bail them out.
Pure South Park. They out South Parked South Park.
And by that I mean South Park is going to have a hard time parodying this. It’s already got all the elements of parody in reality.
They are here to disrupt and trivialize and divert.
awesome!
Their problem may be that they’ve run into more than a few who aren’t good guys. Cops are like any other group of humans. People use the same excuse not to go to church. They say folks there are “hypocrits”. They’re right...about a lot of them. Doesn’t mean they shouldn’t go to church, add to the “non hypocrit” population there. Same with cops. They lie, cheat, steal, and abuse their power....some of them. Doesn’t mean we don’t need good “men” to be cops (quotes for PC). One thing’s for sure, we have plenty of cops. And here in TN, they’re very poorly trained. That’s a shame, because they don’t know how to drive (or safely make traffic stops), which sets a bad example for our young’ns, and it gets them killed regularly. Poor training is a real disservice to cops and their families, more than it is to us civvies.
Mental problems my foot! These two need to be slapped around for a good five minutes and have some sense knocked into them! It’d save the taxpayers a load a time and money.
Dude, you’ve got issues. Where would any of us be without the ‘’thin blue line’’? Two of my cousins are police officers and I’m proud of them.

I don’t really know what he was doing, but I know it got my attention when he said soon after the event that they were very convinced from the family’s behavior (later thought to be acting) that it was not a hoax. At the time I said to myself, “Why doesn’t he just shut up and describe it as an ongoing investigation?”
So he is either stupid or clever, lol.
These two idiots are damned lucky that no one was killed or injured trying to rescue a phantom passenger from that balloon.
No way are the liberals going to bail out these two. Remember their stunt cost BamaKennedy's townhall meeting in New Orleans, to be without 'L I V E' camera, lights, and action using a 4th grader for some 'reality tv' asking BamaKennedy 'why does everybody hate you?' stunt....
No, these people hogggged the 'air' in more ways than just a lost 6 year old in a fly away hot air balloon.
They should have said Toonces the cat was on the balloon, then I would never have doubted their story.
Exactly. One of the best weapons law enforcement has is to keep people thinking they're not too quick.
babygene, you should probably set a password on your screensaver...it seems that a child posted in your absence.
Based on the numbers they had for the weight of the craft, it would have. It was 18 pounds heavier than they'd been told, so it wouldn't...but it was close.
The answer isn't "stupid." I wouldn't call it "clever," though, as it's a pretty standard police trick. Just because many perps (and FReepers :-) aren't quick enough to realize the police can mislead, too, doesn't mean it's anything special.
Please stop by the FReepathon thread and give it a bump. If you haven’t donated yet, please give it some thought.
Thank you!
This makes me sad for their children. I hope the kids have non-crazy grandparents or similar to go stay with. The foster system is not a good place for kids to be (in general — I am aware that there are some excellent foster parents out there, being personally acquainted with one of them — but there is also an awful lot of abuse and neglect in the foster system).
My maternal grandfather was a cop; my paternal grandfather was a fireman. Needless to say, I support the police and firemen.
