MONTREAL — Inmates who came under a complete smoking ban on federal prison properties in May 2008 will now be able to medicate their frayed nerves with nicotine — at least outdoors.

A Federal Court judge ruled Friday that the sweeping ban on smoking "simply goes too far."

~snip~

The judge gave the government 90 days to revise the smoking directive.

Thisd will no doubt be interpreted as outside the prison gates.

Nope. Inside the prison gates, as long as they smoke outside.

The problem is that the crown has 30 days to file an appeal, and if they don’t, (as if), the government has been given 90 days to comply.

If they’re lucky, they will be able to have a smoke, outside, in February, but I doubt it.

You gotta really need a nicotine fix to go outside in 30 below temps for a drag.

You can get as much nicotine as you want if it’s from an approved gum or lozenge. Hell, you can work your way up to 20 packs of gum a day and make Pfizer and Glaxo rich.

Was this a sign of the Apocalypse? Death Row inmates couldn’t smoke because it is bad for their health?

Oh I forgot, there is no death penalty in Canada is there.

Was this a sign of the Apocalypse?

Almost everything is, these days.

Oh I forgot, there is no death penalty in Canada is there.

20 years to life, with time off for time served in custody, and good behaviour, is the most one gets for murder, unless selected as a 'dangerous offender', which can mean life with no release.

There were 594 murders in 2008 here, out of a population of 33 Million.
