Eight-Figure Couric Demands 'Humility' From Seven-Figure Wall Streeters
NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

Dispatch from the Department of Pot-Meet-Kettle . . .

Katie Couric has demanded "humility" from Wall Streeters making seven-figure incomes. This from a woman pulling down . . . eight figures [an estimated $15 million/year] from CBS while cementing the Evening News' caboose status.

Couric made her hypocritical plea in her "Notebook" segment yesterday, commenting on Pres. Obama's pay czar's plan to cut compensation for employees of financial firms that have received bail-out bucks [emphasis added]:

Maybe we should push Class Warfare back at the Left and just ceaselessly talk about how rich Katie is, or John Kerry, or Obama, or any of them. Rich folks trying to boss around other people and cut their pay.

Where do they get the right?

Katie is another affirmative action beneficiary with a disordered mind. If Obama wants to force doctors to accept a reasonable annual salary, and we are already punishing Wall Street and bankers, how long will it take to focus on the bloated media?

In the good ole' days, she would at best, be drawing a GS 12 salary, IMO. ...still not impressed with Katie.

CBS doesn’t get any financing from the government. TARP companies are getting unlimited funding from the Treasury at Treasury borrowing rates (which are many percentage points lower than what these companies would have to pay by issuing debt). They are making excess profits off the government teat, and bloating Uncle Sam’s balance sheet. I see restricting exec pay as a good way to wean them off. The sooner they stop leeching off the taxpayer, meaning the sooner they pay off their debt to the Treasury, the sooner their execs can pay themselves whatever they want.

Reminds me of a Dale Murphy quote (always a classy guy) when he was mentioned for MVP consideration on a truly lousy Atlanta Braves team:
"Why would I be the most valuable player? The Braves could have finished last without me."

People continue to laugh and think it funny when the $45M/year Jay Leno, who never managed a ice-cream stand, plays the “regular guy” and becomes indignant with the “rich”.

People think it normal that Adam Sandler, sometimes referred to as actor, gets $30M for a movies he makes in 6 weeks, but abnormal that a CEO leading 50,000 people and secures jobs for them is not worth $3-5M per year (in which (s)he works 14 hour days and hardly ever sees his/her family).

Socialism has never stopped at impoverishing the wealthy. It has always reached down to the poorest and made everybody miserable.

This may have been unknown 100 years ago, but it is quite clear.

I really do not understand why Republican strategists are so weak. They try to convince the American people that Obama's change is bad. Republicans should emphasize that Obama's change is barckward: it has been tried in many countries and failed.

Which is EXACTLY what the liberals want! They want these CEO’s to quit so that they can put their type of CEO in charge of these HUGE companies.

This new CEO will sell the liberal talking points to their employees, their constituents and their customers. They will come out on TV for the things that liberals want and they will continue to get untold billions of dollars from the government (profit or not)!

This is about POWER! Not the people! POWER!!!

I think the the TARP companies should have been allowed to sink or swim on their own. But as long as they're getting practically interest-free loans from the government, the profits should be used to pay down their debt, not overpay the workers. The economy is in free-fall - these people are making huge sums of money only because they're getting practically interest-free government loans (0.15%). These people can't go out and make more money with non-TARP firms - non-TARP firms can't get free financing from Uncle Sam.

Yep! Try running a small, personal company and see what people think! I had my own construction contracting company for about six years. At my best, I had 21 employees. I worked seven days a week, about 16 hours a day (because I also worked a full time job to have insurance for my family) and the MOST I made from my troubles was about $50,000.00 from my construction company. But, Uncle Sam thought I was a millionaire and taxed me like I was Donald effing Trump!

My extended family (most of them liberals) thought I was rich and that I was hording lots of money because I wasn’t out buying $1000 Christmas presents for everyone!

I told them at the Christmas dinner, after hearing about the twentieth snarky remark, if any of them wanted to come to work for me, I would make them as “rich” as me and all they had to do was work two jobs, seven days a week and listen to family a$$holes who complain that they don’t have the same money! Funny, there were no takers.

I didn’t hear anymore remarks from ANYONE that year!

First, I agree, the companies should have failed - PERIOD!

[But as long as they’re getting practically interest-free loans from the government, the profits should be used to pay down their debt, not overpay the workers.]

But, let’s take a look at your argument above. Do you really think that their “profits” which don’t exist are really going to pay back their debts? Next, there is NO audit system setup to even find out if these companies really ever pay the money back. Next, that money does not go to “payback the government,” it goes back into the TARP funds which can then be used for ANYTHING that Ben Bernancke wants to use them on! So, even IF they paid the money back, it isn’t going back to us taxpayers - EVER!! It is a never ending slush fund; personally, I hope they never pay it back, so the slush fund goes DRY!!!

Next, who are YOU to determine what “overpaid” is? I mean, if these companies DO ultimately make a profit, then don’t these guys that take a company that was loosing money and turn it around to become profitable DESERVE all that money that was paid to them? I mean, what gives you the right to determine the value of these employee’s labor?

More importantly, does cutting these guys salary do ANYTHING for you personally? I mean, did it help put money in your pocket? Did it better the world economy? Did it end pollution? Did it end (the non-existent) Global Warming? Don’t hate because someone makes more money than you and blame it on the TARP funds that are NEVER going to be re-paid. That is just BS! You are trying to make yourself feel better by hating on someone and using a lame excuse to do so!

Who am I? I am Joe Taxpayer funding these bozos just like I'm funding welfare payments for able-bodied adults who don't want to work. These people are the walking dead. Those companies would be liquidated just like Lehman and Bear Stearns if not for government intervention. These "workers" should be on the unemployment line. The only reason they have jobs is because of this massive subsidy to the tune of hundreds of billions of dollars of interest they did not have to pay in 2008 and 2009. That's where the bonus money is coming from.

I don't agree with the intervention, any more than I agree with welfare payments. But now that my tax dollars are involved, I'd like to control how much these parasites are paid. If they want to regain control of how they're paid, they need to repay their goddamn loans and borrow in the marketplace like the rest of us do.

[But now that my tax dollars are involved, I’d like to control how much these parasites are paid.]

Well, then you are barking up the wrong tree! If you want to control things, start with controlling the pay of your elected officials in Washington - I bet you don’t complain this much about their pay. I mean, why aren’t you demanding that every politician take a 90% pay cut? They are doing a MUCH worse job than ANY of the people on Wall Street!

But, that aside, I am telling you that going after this money, the TARP money, is a rat-hole worse than any VC filled hole in all of Vietnam in 1970! We, the tax-suckers, are NEVER going to get that money back! EVER! Would I like to see that money back, YEP! But will I ever see that money in my lifetime - NOPE! So crying over this spilled milk is really a waste of our collective time and it only hurts the US economy, because the replacements are going to be worse than the ones that drove the companies into this situation.

I say, we threw them a lifeline (which we shouldn’t have). Now we let them sink or swim on that dime! If they succeed, they will do so like you and me: cleaning house, hiring/firing as needed and cutting costs! That is all the money you will get, make good decisions or go away.

These companies will NEVER learn this as long as the government keeps feeding them off the TARP teat (which they will)! Think about this, if these companies comply, then the US Government can control them through price-fixing, payroll-fixing and any other-fixing ALL without ever having to write a single law to do so! And they can continue to suckle at the teat in this scenario! Talk about a shadow-puppet!

There are reports that these companies are trying to pay back monies they got under TARP.

Geithner won’t take any repayments yet-—because he says “we are still conducting ‘stress tests’ to see if they can stay strong after they pay us back”.....

Since when does a lender refuse to take payments on monies owed? Geinter id doing exactly that!!

Only since NObama, Feinberg, and Geithner and Congress can continue to have these companies under their thumb.

When the 7 companies have had a total brain drain of their top 100 executives, then the shell that is left will be taken over for one of NObama’s minions...you watch...then probably staffed with affirmative action hirees.
