It's His Rubble Now
Wall Street Journal ^ | October 22, 2009 | Pedggy Noonan

Posted on 10/23/2009 5:58:53 AM PDT by libstripper

At a certain point, a president must own a presidency. For George W. Bush that point came eight months in, when 9/11 happened. From that point on, the presidency—all his decisions, all the credit and blame for them—was his. The American people didn't hold him responsible for what led up to 9/11, but they held him responsible for everything after it. This is part of the reason the image of him standing on the rubble of the twin towers, bullhorn in hand, on Sept.14, 2001, became an iconic one. It said: I'm owning it.

Mr. Bush surely knew from the moment he put the bullhorn down that he would be judged on everything that followed. And he has been. Early on, the American people rallied to his support, but Americans are practical people. They will support a leader when there is trouble, but there's an unspoken demand, or rather bargain: We're behind you, now fix this, it's yours.

Noonan is an elitist pig. She is to be mocked at any opportunity. Unfortunately, I can’t mock her on this, I can only say she’s wrong.

The Obama administration has staked out their territory. They have decided they are going to appeal to 1/2 the country. They have written off everyone who is centrist and to the right. How does that tie in to owning one’s presidency?

The hatred for GWB in the left is like an eternal flame. It won’t go out, and can always be used. The media is complicit in all attempts to blame things on GWB. So, for the length of Obama’s first term, everything will be blamed on GWB. The media, and about 50% of the sheeple will buy it. It’s a gamble on the part of the Obama administration, but it’s a reasonable one. They are counting on Obama’s cult of personality to win the day and get enough “centrists” for the second term.

Peggy still doesn’t get it. Barry’s tanking numbers are related to to what he wants to do, not what he hasn’t done.

Zero is not the best marxist but then he is her marxist..

Barry Half-White croons her tune.. warbles her love song.. sings a bit off key but in falsetto almost resonant waves..

Peggy is a ditz, no matter what color her hair is..

No, Peggy. The ruins belong to you and everyone like you who enabled this. If you had been listening to the lyrics instead falling in love with the crooner’s voice, you would have seen this coming a long time ago.

It is a problem of political judgement, of putting forward bills that were deeply flawed or off-point. Bailouts, the stimulus package, cap-and-trade; turning to health care at the exact moment in history when his countrymen were turning their concerns to the economy, joblessness, debt and deficits—all of these reflect a misreading of the political terrain.

The esteemed Ms. Noonan misses the central point of Barry 0bama.

He is not "misreading the political terrain", he is pursuing his lifelong goals.

He hates Western Civilization in general and America in particular.

He has spent his entire adult life seeking-out and associating with those who think like he does.

Trying to improve the economy, lessen joblessness and lower deficits/debt would benefit the US.

Running us into unpayable debt via "stimulus" and "bailouts", crippling our economy with "cap and trade" and strangling what's left with "universal health care" further his agenda of destroying us.

Of course he's going to pick the latter.

Peggy has a lightbulb moment:

Of course this is AFTER she reads the polls.

It's his now. He gets the credit and the blame. How do we know this? The American people are telling him. You can see it in the polls. That's what his falling poll numbers are about. "It's been almost a year, you own this. Fix it."

No, the Boston NBER people said the a recession "began" mid Jan. 01 and everyone still calls it the 'Bush Recession'.

And what they inherited was, truly, terrible: again, a severe economic crisis... - From a once reliable conservative voice, this is just breathtaking. It is a simple, easily provable fact that a major chunk of the crisis was banks lending GIGANTIC amounts of mortgage money to people who could never possibly repay it, while former senators 0bama, Biden and Clinton cheered. Sadly, it's not just Noonan. The entire Republican party simply refuses to say it.

I just read the whole piece, found it insightful.
Noonan is certainly not in the bag for our side so when I read something like this it's more encouraging to me than anything a real conservative might say

I enjoyed her pointing out that Zero dropping his "G's"..."Gettin' all folksy" only underscores the difference between himself and the people he's trying to ingratiate himself with.

His presidency is in real trouble and isn't showing any signs of learning a thing.
Gotta love it.

Partially at the behest of a young "community organizer" in Chicago in the 1990s.

Hoist on his own petard, he is.

Peggy even frames it as a political miscalculation instead of bad policy.

The Beltway Flu has infected them all. Their only concern is the political and not the Constitutional or governmental at all.

Maybe if we get some Conservatives to start forcefully pointing this out some of the RINOs will eventually start to change their ways...

This is rarified talk from someone who is partially responsible for leading the RNC pack to side with Obama during the election. When will Peggy Noonan have her moment to “own” that? She’s been coasting FAR too long on the credentials she achieved during the Reagan Administration. Ignorant slut.

Noonan lays it off on Bush, too so she’s a fool, too. Pardon me while I add to your correct observations a “timeline” if you will, for all on this thread to discuss.

There are historical proven factors for the economic crisis:

1.)Jimmy Carter’s Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) provided the vehicle for future real estate nightmare. It was sidelined for years after by realists in the Reagan revolution. But it sat there, nevertheless.

2.)the dot com bubble of Clinton era was aligned with Fed Reserve Chair Greenspan’s “no regulations-free market” beliefs. Goldman Sachs member Clinton Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin played ball w/Greenspan while the bubble of “pump and dump dotcoms” money grew and grew in the “greatest market ever seen” and “irrational exuberance”
and it was beach time, baby. Oh, and ignore the attacks by islamofascists— we’re makin money honey. Clinton gets serviced and services at the same time.

3.)when the bubble bursts, the funny money of desperate dot com millionaires, losing every day, had to be invested somewhere, and they went into real estate/partnerships—many creatively woven into CRA supported “minority owner” status tax advantaged investments.

4.)concurrent with this “boom/bubble” in real estate was the Dodd/Barney Frank effect of federal laws requiring banks, under the CRA, to redline loan to people who were poor/illegal/fraud artists/ or proxy minority “buyers” that the dot-com/real estate investors cultivated to pump up their portfolios and try to recover their losses thru real estate. Houses flipped (”make millions with no money down” fake loans, under the table HUD statements and kickbacks to the banks— the works. And, 9/11 happens, delaying financial reality further and distracting us all as we paid attention finally to stopping our enemies.

Finally, the banks having made the loans & knowing they would never be paid— they then laid off these losses through hedge funds and the “black box” of derivative trading, and courted their own insurers to do it also (AIG,Bear Stearns, Lehman etc.) and... eventually as it should, the fake money caught up with the fake reality of the hedge funds values, which tanked.

George Bush trusted his Treas. Sec. Paulson to OK the tapping of taxpayers for printed money to bail out his banker and trader pals at Goldman Sachs (their enemy Lehman was allowed to fail- the only one that was, hmmmm) That’s how it happened Peggy. And now Obama is a tool of George Soros and Goldman Sachs and Richard Daley. Over, and out. But, for sure we are deep in rubble now that is being increased by the actions of this idiot tool marxist trying to ruin the country to “remake” it. The RINOs are invested in this failure and will not say against it. Conservatives are not invested and have the courage of their convictions. Say it loud, shout them all down. You lie, Obama.

Even if you accept that this was all Dubya’s mess (and I for one don’t), and even if you think Peg’s been a schmuck over the last year (and I think she’s been a BIG schmuck at times over the last year), her larger point is correct. At some point, it’s President Obama’s mess to fix whether he started it or not. Well, actually, as of noon on January 20th, once he took the oath, it became his mess to fix whether he started it or not. This is the job he worked hard for over the last few years. This is the job he wanted. He now looks stupid complaining about how hard it is.

The RINOs are invested in this failure and will not say against it - And no Republican (RINO or otherwise) will point out the democrat roots to the economic collapse come election time, leaving the public to hear POTUS, the entire democrat machine, and the MSM chanting "Bush failed policies" without rebuttal. It drives me nuts.
