"His father was a great friend of my father." The reference to William Ayers' father was how Mayor Richard M. Daley began his defense of Barack Obama for his association with the unrepentant Weather Underground terrorist. Daley's father, of course, was Richard M. Daley, mayor of Chicago from 1955 until his death in 1976. Ayers' father was head of Commonwealth Edison, the Chicago-based utility, from 1964 to 1980.
You bet they were great friends. That's governance, Chicago style. The head of government is friends with the heads of every big business, lobby and union, and together they make decisions on how everyone else will live. Those on the inside get what they want. Those on the outside -- well, they get what the big guys want them to have. That's life in the big city.
It's not the worst way to run a city. I know -- I'm from Detroit, which might be better off if it had mayors named Daley for 41 of the last 54 years. But it's not the optimal way to run a national administration, at least if you've promised to bring in a new era of bipartisanship and mutual respect. Even so, it appears to be the way that Barack Obama, who once aspired to be mayor of Chicago, has decided to run his administration.

The Daleys have run Chicago the way that the DeMedici family ran Florence. Machiavelli couldn’t teach them anything about how to rule a city-state.
Yeah, too bad he’s swinging with a limp wrist. Obama is a lightweight, whiny punk with a glass jaw.
Now that we know how corrupt and ruthless this White House crowd is, we can deal with them accordingly.
So that’s where they keep their “brass.” Good to know. And don’t forget to wear a cup if you go into battle with them. And maybe a helmet wouldn’t hurt, either.
He has surrounded himself with nuts and misfits. He’s not Daley. He may want to act like Daley. Rahm may want him to, as well. But if he’s going to do that, he better sweep all those racists, commies, crazies and perverts out of there and replace them with gangsters. Of course, it won’t be Obama’s presidency any more at that point. He can go make nice speeches while the gangsters divide up the country.
...and he whines/crys like a baby when someone hits back.
Dictators and thugs don’t last. The clock ticks, and pretty soon you look around to find them gone. They leave much pain and disarray behind them, but they disappear.
But we asked for it. We would not be screaming toward socialism if we were are a righteous people.
Michael, this is not Jeopardy, but I’ll buy you a letter - J!
Richard J. Daley!
You’ve obviously never lived in Cook County.
Probably a typo. Barone knows Chicago politics extremely well. His past pieces on “The Chicago Way” are full of insightful detail.
