A strong earthquake has shaken buildings in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
The earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 6.1 and was centered in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan. That's according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The quake was felt in the Afghan capital, Kabul, and in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad.
And our troops are....?
Most likely okay. 6.1 100 mi north of Kabul so should not be too much damage to our bases. Good COIN (Counter Insurgency) chance here to see our boys helping people out of rubble and giving out food maybe win some minds over...
Strong earthquake strikes Afghanistan and Pakistan
6.2-magnitude quake hits northeast Afghanistan: USGS AFP/File Workers rest in the ruins of a building in Kabul. A strong 6.2-magnitude earthquake hit northeast Afghanistan
25 mins ago
KABUL A strong earthquake centered in the towering Hindu Kush mountains shook a wide area of eastern Afghanistan and Pakistan early Friday, swaying buildings in the Afghan and Pakistani capitals.
There were no initial reports of damage or casualties from the quake, which struck about 12:21 a.m. Afghan time (1951 GMT, 3:51 p.m. EDT Thursday).
However, the temblor was centered in a remote mountain area where communications are poor and reports of casualties take time to reach the capital.

south of kabul sorry!
Watch it got Osama Bin Laden in the remote caves and Obama takes credit.

Oh, yeah. Our media will be ALL over that, LOL!
Sorry. I’m jaded, retired Army. ;)
To bad it wasn’t a magnatude 5 kiloton!
The important thing here is that the Afghan people sees our soldiers helping the Afghan people - the Lame Stream Media here at home are not important to the mission there.
LOL - epicenter?
I hope you’re right. :)
Well, it worked in Iraq.
Things like this help in the decision-making process.
I hate earthquakes. :-P
True. I’m just so angry at the media these days. Covering 0bama’s @ss when he’s SUCH a jerk and too inept to be CIC.
I fear for our kids that are over there these days. They don’t deserve this. Fight to WIN and give them the resources to do so.
He’s so busy going out on dates with his wife, playing basketball and hosting FUNDRAISERS these days. He sickens me, and the safety and support for our military does color my opinions on just about everything else.
Hindu Kush is an active region in more ways than one.
Mt. Obama trembled, wait ‘til he blows.
Gonna need a mighty big mop. ;-)

Most likely.
BUMP...
Would be nice if this took out Usama....if he really is alive....
LOL, that’s what I thought.....
Someone thought Chitral might be where Bin Laden was hiding out.,
We have a lot of troops in the Hindu Kush mts - in the Kunar and adjacent Districts...
And their little fire bases they pick axed out of the steep, rock strewn mts and hill sides is not a place I would want to be in an earthquake...steep rock hillsides could send a lot of house size boulders crashing down into the narrow valleys and goats paths our troops patrol...and totally take out a fire base.
Prayers up for out troops
Let me guess - you dont' have a family member fighting in the Hindu Kush mountains...
This is the area, north eastern Afghanistan, where our troops have taken the heaviest losses - including 9KIA in one battle last summer and 8 KIA this month...if anyone's listening...
They're perched out on the mountainsides, islolated in small groups, no running water, lucky to get air support in an hour, if at all = living like mountain goats in almost daily firefights...
.
that bullseye is their area -
below, what "home" looks like to many of our troops in the Kunar = soon to be covere3d in deep snows in one of the most dangerous places on earth for winter - temps to -130, 140. (and their shelter - see the hooch in back of the soldier)... along with all the rest.
Pray for our troops...

A respite between firefights at "home" in the Hindu Kush mts =
They're so isolated from bases that the only way to get supplies - including water (no running water, (no showers) no PX, no heat, for months at a time - a year being the shortest deployment - and more often than not, the drops do NOT land on their little spit of the mountain neccessitating them to go outside the wire to retrieve and pack back up the mountains = aided when they can get one, a donkey to help pack - all the while open to the taliban...
Few of us back here have a clue what conditions these troops live under...and no one in the WH gives a damn,

Pray for our troops
I am sorry, It said Pakistan also.. I could care less what happens to the Pakistani bastards.
Thank you for those photos. Our guys are the bravest and the best.
I don’t agree with McChrystal’s tactics of sending small groups out to terrain like that. They can so easily be isolated, surrounded and overwhelmed by the Taliban mountain men who have been raised and trained in such places.
If I were the General, I’d have them all called in to central locations in large groups for the duration of the winter.
Was McChrystal last in his class at West Point? He certainly didn’t pick up much in Military History classes.
these ROE are directly responsible for the highest loss of our troops this year since the first year of the way -
Here's an example:
http://www.mcclatchydc.com/227/story/75036.html
My g’son spent 15 months in those mts and is on his way back.
That’s terrible. It’s almost like McC and his boss the CIC want us to suffer terrible casualties out there. Whose side are they on anyway?
I read those ROE. Disgraceful! I wish we could resurrect General Patton and put him in charge.
TG your boy is on his way back. That will be a wonderful day when he arrives home.
My grandnephew got back last week, after two tours in Afghanistan. Now he’s got a nice assignment in Spain, where he and his bride can make up for lost time.
6.1 will turn building made of mud and rocks to rubble.
If the zero finds Osama he will make him his “Islam Czar” in charge of giving military secrets to our enemies.
I agree with you. It seems the Taliban strategy is to overwhelm smaller forces. Hopefully, our guys will hunker down for the winter in larger, better protected bases. God protect and keep our troops safe.
Tsunami alert issued?
Yeah, yeah...I know...I had to ask...Somebody ALWAYS asks...
Not to mention really urgent situations, such as appearances on Leno and Letterman.
...this should help stabalize the country.
Afganistan is located in the southern fringe of the Eurasian plate and the Arabian plate and Indian plate are in collision. That is why earthquakes are very common in this area.
That happens in subduction zones in the ocean.
Sarcasm can happen at any time any where...and it takes many forms...
Wishful thinking.

OMGosh!!! I thought it was a joke until I looked at the link! Couldn’t stomach reading the article, though. What a way to start the work day—guess I know where not to vacation next year!
God bless our troops, especially those enduring those conditions! I’ve sent care packages with heavy duty cold-weather-resistant duct tape & other stuff to some of these troops, hoping it helps a tiny bit, at least let them know they’re not forgotten.
I would encourage you, though, to be mindful of OPSEC (operation security) and perhaps not post pictues with identifying landmarks. We know that enemy trolls cruise these forums. As much as Americans need to know our troops are in rough places and need our support, we don’t want to hand those enemies any more info.
Again, God bless our troops—true fighters for freedom!
I am asking FReepers for special extra prayers for your grandson and all those serving in that harsh and unforgivable land.
We all pray for the troops every day, but we can send up a coupla extra for our FReepers’ kin.
What the need to keep them safer is a CIC in DC who gives a damn - and give them the troops they need (they have ALWAYS been undermanned) and scrap the new ROE that are deliberately sacrificing our troops over a possible civilian “in the area” -
Our gov’t is now as big an enemy as the Taliban
