Ex-teacher given up to life in prison for sex with student
Salt Lake Trib ^ | Oct. 1, 2009 | Nate Carlisle

Posted on 10/21/2009 10:52:20 AM PDT by Colofornian

Fillmore -- The father looked at Keith Gillins, his daughter's former teacher, and said he would never forgive him.

"My daughter's life has been scarred forever by you," the father told Gillins.

Then, the father addressed the people in Millard County who suggested his daughter was responsible: "Shame on you."

Gillins on Wednesday received three sentences of three years to life in prison for a sexual relationship with a former Millard High School student. Fourth District Court Judge Donald Eyre also sentenced Gillins to two terms of 1 to 15 years in prison. All five counts will run concurrently and include charges filed in both Juab and Millard counties.

The Salt Lake Tribune typically does not identify victims of sex crimes.

Gillins' defense attorney, Jim Slavens, argued for a one-year jail sentence and probation. Slavens made legal arguments, but also pointed to Gillins' history in Fillmore. Gillins, 61, is a long-time teacher who also coached the Millard High boys basketball team to its only state championship. He was Fillmore's mayor for 12 years and an LDS bishop in the town.

Besides losing his position in the community, Gillins was divorced by his wife of 41 years and won't be allowed to teach again.

The Juab and Millard county attorneys and the victim's family asked for prison time. Juab County Attorney Jared Eldridge disclosed Gillins recently admitted to fondling a Beaver High School student when he was a teacher there about 35 years ago.

Gillins cultivated a relationship with the Millard High student and offered her a teaching assistant position in the school, Eldridge said. "This is a pattern that occurred over months," he said.

Gillins also sought to portray the relationship as romantic rather than abusive, Eldridge said.

The victim attended the hearing but did not speak. But Heidi Nestel, a lawyer retained by the victim's family, read aloud from a letter by the victim. "He is a sick, sick man and I hate him," Nestel read.

Gillins, shackled and wearing an orange jumpsuit, leaned forward to watch Nestel and the father speak but showed no reaction. Eldridge said the girl, now 18, postponed college because of Gillins and left town when he was free on bail.

Gillins was the last to address the judge and apologized to the victim, her family, his family, the town, and educators and coaches across the state. "After this day, she [the victim] will never, ever hear from me again," Gillins said.

In explaining his ruling, Eyre noted Gillins had contacted the victim despite a court order and said there were three instances of sex or sexual contact with the girl in Gillins' classroom.

"When parents send their children to school, when I send my children to school, it's supposed to be a place of refuge," Eyre said.

Three years to life, concurrent - probably not life then - faithful attendance at counselling sessions, some expressed remorse and insight, plans to volunteer at a nursing home or food bank and keep out of contact with children, good behavior in prison - five years.

Two of the articles I posted were from today's news in Utah.
A third article was from Saturday in Northern Utah -- that mentioned five recent cases they highlighted. Except for that article (by the Ogden Standard-Examiner) -- and a KSL article last week that highlighted three cases -- none of the other Utah news media seemingly wants to cover the spate of school based and (and one case involving an Lds seminary for high schoolers) that's been uncovered late this year in just one small state.

(Perhaps some of them are too wrapped up in protecting either their state reputation or the religious one that tends to be linked with it).

If this can happen in a highly religious state -- though it's a state, I might add, that was about #17 in sex offenders as of a few years ago -- then few of our kids are safe in these settings.

There's a movement afoot, "No More Stolen Childhoods" -- (www.nomorestolenchildhoods.org) which needs serious addressing.

I think you are misunderstanding the nature of the rule.

It only came about because it was observed that the ‘hot’ female teachers were not being punished as severely as the ‘not so hot’ female teachers.

It may have come about that way but it has morphed. I have seen men on this site defending a women pedophile because they would have liked to have slept with a hot teacher when they were young. They don’t think the boys are victims. It happens on every thread about a female teacher.

No it isn’t. Fact is society should be sentencing women to the exact same type of sentences but too many men ( and you can see it here at FR) say if the woman was hot then how wonderful for the horny teen aged boy. This has got to stop.

I know a HS coach who married one of his students. They have a long-term marriage and three boys.

In these cases I suppose the age of consent plays a more serious part than the teacher-student relationship taboo. In Alabama the age of consent is 16. If a teacher makes a move on a 17 year old student I guess he is in a lot less trouble than if he is moving in on a 15 year old.

Women can’t rape a boy. So they deserve no prison time. However, if this was consensual and the girl was a nympho, then life in prison, or even 5 years, is absurd. Flame me all you want, but we moved our kids from a middle school because of how many 11-year old girls looked like street whores. And invariably they had permissive mothers rliving their youth through their slutty daughters. Sick culture in America these days.

Agreed. When will the men quit cheering the teen aged boys who end up being abused by these women?

The cheering and atta boys are endless. Easy enough to get equal justice -— quit telling boys what a great thing it is to have nailed a hot older woman. Quit telling boys that scoring is more important than loving.

I could not agree more. I posted about this kind of thing YEARS ago here, a number of times nearly EVERY other man on the post DEFENDED the women, saying things like “she just helped him to grow up” or”he wanted it” or “i’d hit it’ or even some said ..”if it was MY kid, i’d cheer him on”...

And as for ME, when I said things like”it IS rape, if a woman has sex with a 14YO boy, and she SHOULD go to PRISON or such..I got flamed, kicked and even THREATENED by some men here. So...I quit posting my “fanatical puritanical views”.. as some called them.

On the OTHER hand...most ALL of the WOMEN agreed with me, some saying ...”if it was MY kid and the law would not do anything..I WOULD”.

Are you saying that a 24 year old female teacher can rape a 15-year old boy? Tell me how. Men and women are different and should be treated differently.

Also I don't understand how I am "blaming the victim" by mentioning how many 11-year old ho-bags there were in my kids' former school we yanked them out of. These were fully-developed girls, not "prepubescent". One 12-year old girl wore a low cut shirt and had a tatoo, and her mother was called in, and the mother was mad at the school! My beef is with permissive parents. You really need to take time to read comments properly.

Keith Lorraine Gillins, 61, pleaded guilty to two first-degree felonies—attempted rape and attempted sodomy—in Juab County for an incident that happened over Easter weekend of this year. The charges carry a maximum sentence of three years to life.

In Millard County, Gillins pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree felony attempted rape for a November 2008 incident, which also carries a penalty of three years to life.

He also pleaded guilty to two counts of forcible sex abuse—both second-degree felonies stemming from crimes committed in October and November of last year. Those two hold a 1 to 15 year maximum penalty.

Actually, they can. The body is built to respond a certain way. Doesn't mean the person willed their body to respond that way.

I don't care what people say, it is DIFFERENT!!! The guys are bragging about it to their friends the next day...what a score. The girl would be traumatized for life. Yes I am a guy and did not have this happen to me, but if my Spanish Teacher forced me to have sex with her as a Junior in High School...I can't imagine at 40 I would still be traumatized by it...I am sure I would be telling everyone I know about it. She of course is gorgeous!!!!

Okay, so we’re going to have one set of standards for men and one for women? Why is sex “injurious” and “traumatizing” to a female and “liberating” for a male? Will we have different standards for rape then? Don’t get me wrong, I get your reasoning - the boy will be bragging the day after, the girl will be crying. I don’t think the law can afford to call a difference on this though, not if it’s going to serve an impartial justice.

In some ways I agree with you, but it is the jury that makes the decision and if you have 1/2 men on the jury or more than it is going to be very hard to convince the jury that she needs to spend the rest of her life in jail. Maybe if the boy gives a really moving speech about how his life is ruined and then the men on the jury will probably just think he is gay...lol. (sorta kidding)

Yup. And isn’t it a sad commentary on the human condition that the reactions are like that. Mothers are always bears when it comes to their children. More Fathers need to be the same way. It saddens me that some think that ‘nailing it’ is the most important thing for a teenager to do ( or an adult for that matter). It cheapens what should be part of an intimate and adult relationship

I read your comments and understood them for the clap trap they are. Fact is that animalistic behaviour is just that. Teaching our children about how to be loving caring responsible adults is what parents should be doing. Do all manage to do that? NO. Then again adults seem to think that whatever they do is fine and they have NO obligations to behave as adults ( she wanted it, she looked like a slut, it is all her fault). Put them all in burghas and then perhaps you will be happy
