Senator urges Obama: Don't start enemies list 25 mins ago
WASHINGTON (Reuters) A top Republican invoked the memory of the scandal-marred Nixon administration on Wednesday to urge U.S. President Barack Obama to "back up" and not "start an enemies list."
Senator Lamar Alexander told Reuters he has begun to see the Obama White House adopting an attitude similar to that of the Richard Nixon White House four decades ago, that "everybody is against us and we are going to get them."
Alexander cited as examples the Obama administration's suggestion that it may support stripping the insurance industry of its exemption of federal anti-trust laws, its clash with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the president saying he will call out people who oppose him and boycott Fox News network.
Alexander, a member of the congressional Republican leadership, said he is "suggesting that the president back up" and "don't start an enemies list."

Too late...the “enemies” list was started during the campaign.
My oh my..........such “tough talk” from the Coward Party.
Like “Tell dog not to bark...” ???
Yeah, too late. Obama, Rahm, and their endless communist czars are total evil pr*cks, whose very reason for living is to HATE.
Alexander is sadly mistaken. The O admin has a wide berth to form an enemies list. They have infinitely more unwavering support than Nixon could have ever comprehended. That support comes from all corners of a very vibrant MSM.
Big difference though—Nixon didn’t have the media bending over for him.
Coming from a Republican, this sounds a little like:
Please don’t hit us anymore! We’ll be good.
Yeah, Rahm is such an evil bastard the “enemies list” is hard-wired into his brain. It is way beyond the starting stage.
So he compared Obama to Nixon, eh?
On the good side, that could be a warning that Obama could end up like Nixon.
On the negative side, I would suggest he pick somebody way worse than Nixon to compare Obama with (and keep the comparisons out of the Republican Party, since there are so many comparisons he could make far over on the radical left).
Obama already has an active and growing enemies list.
Unfortunately, Obama’s list is made up of patriots, not the terrorists that seek to destroy us all.
read Saul Alinsky, he urges you to make your life an enemies list
It would be a long one. And I should be on it somewhere
Following him are all the perverted trash that fill up the White House.
The list goes on through a majority of members of both houses of Congress as well as their burgeoning staffs.
Hollyweird is well represented as are governors and state legislators.
The media had absolutely no problem with the Clintons having an enemies list. FBI files? What FBI files? Vince Foster ... yeah it was an apparent suicide. Ron Brown, nah, unluckly plane crash. etc. etc. etc. BUT, a vast right-wing conspiracy, SURE, that’s REAL!
Start? He’s already had to start indexing.
“Progressive Lite party cries at name calling from meanies on the left. “They won’t even play with us”... “
That is about the size of it.
I have a different take on this. I see it as a positive sign that the media is promulgating (even on a small level) the whole Obama/Nixonian meme.
Even people on the left are noting the similarities, people like Helen Thomas. Helen actually said that Obama was worse than Nixon.
I hope he does. That way there will be that many more people who hate his guts.
Zer0 has admitted to using cocaine.
Cocaine makes you paranoid.
Hmmm...
Man up, Alexander. Be proud to have your name on that list, as most of us Freepers are.
Starting to look less like carter, more like nixon.
The pros from Chicago are showing the amateurs in DC how the game is played...for keeps.
“everybody is against us and we are going to get them.”
Well, there is one very large difference. Everybody WAS against Nixon. There was a concerted media campaign to take him down, and he had virtually no defenders.
As the saying goes, sometimes they really ARE out to get you.
Now, who is out to get Obama? Maybe four or five voices in the media, with 95% of them still licking his toes? Or millions of angry citizens, acting on their own, who see that he is trying to destroy the country?
And there is another major difference. Obama really is a slimy, corrupt, destructive, pathological liar. Nixon? Well, we agree that he had his problems, and was not very likeable, but strangely enough most of them resulted from his being too liberal.
Who gave us the Environmental Protection Agency? Who gave us the opening to Red China?
But.........they’re all from Chicago. That’s all they know.
As near as I can tell if one is not on their friends list one is automatically on their enemy list.
With Rahm Emanuel as Chief of Staff an enemies list is inevitable.
“It would be a long one. And I should be on it somewhere”
I want to be on it also.
Senator! Please do not tell Obama about the risks of making an “enemies” list.
With any luck, Obama will follow Nixon’s path to the same place Nixon wound up - out of office.
Who picked Harry Blackmun and Lewis Powell for the Supreme Court?
I’ll compare him to Nixon when he develops phlebitis, motion sickness and really bad hay fever has a stroke and dies.
“Alexander is sadly mistaken. The O admin has a wide berth to form an enemies list. They have infinitely more unwavering support than Nixon could have ever comprehended. That support comes from all corners of a very vibrant MSM.”
If I’m not mistaken, in Nixon’s time, both houses of Congress were held by the opposition party Democrats. Obama has his own party in control of both houses. Moreover, the ideology of the Democratic party has shifted from JFK-Lieberman style populists to totalitarian left wing radicals who don’t even pretend to care about freedom.
Furthermore leftists are now in complete control of the bureaucracy. Could you imagine the Valery Plame-Scooter Libby thing happening in 1970? Or congressional committee members that couldn’t be bothered with what poison pills bureaucrats are sneaking into bills involving govt takeover of Health Care, the forced deindustrialization of the US, or International Treaties?
The press hated Nixon, which is kind of odd, because Nixon was certainly the most liberal Republican president in my life time. A comparison between the two (and also Carter) is certainly a positive sign.
Unless the press is either neutralized (go Andrew Breitbart) or goes back to its original mission (slim chance), Obama will escape Nixon's fate.
He sounds like someone you can reason with./S
While it would be nice to see what his medical records have to say, I find it unlikely that Obama has continued his drug use into the White House. Clinton was a cokehead in office and look where it got him - two full terms served and a lot of tail on the side.
I don't see Obama as a paranoid so much as a sheltered child who has never had to endure criticism, discipline or hardship before.
Yes. He also faced a press that hated him (much more than they hated President Reagan).
Nixon had good reason to be paranoid. Except that he wasn't paranoid, you're not paranoid if everyone is really out to get you.
Worse? This anti-American communists rat face insane imbecile makes Nixon look pale. He thinks destroying America is just like a video game and he intends to win. He is so sure he travels all over the world and the US pumping his ego. He is a child that never grew up and his real background is Muslim.
Yes, Rahm Emmanuel is an aging adolescent in his behavior. He stabs tables with a steak knife, calls out the name of enemy Republicans, stabs the table, and shouts “dead, dead, dead”, each time he stabs the table for each Republican name.
This is such juvenile behavior, but, it’s dangerous when such people have the power in the White House.
You’re probably right, but it’s fun to speculate about.
“He also faced a press that hated him”
Nixon’s big sin was that he successfully prosecuted Alger Hiss. The spy Hiss (along with the Cambridge five) had briefed the Soviet intelligence on Roosevelt’s and Churchill’s negotiating strategies prior to the Teheran and Yalta conferences (where FDR was to haggle face to face with Stalin). Thanks to Hiss, Stalin “could see the allied leaders’ cards, and badly out-negotiated them. With information from Hiss, for example, Stalin was able to secure the communist rule of Poland after the war.
Harry Truman was in denial about Hiss throughout the Cold War years and openly despised Nixon. And even then, most of the press favored the Democrats. But after the fall of the USSR, former KGB and GRU agents confirmed Hiss’s treachery.
