'It Was All A Lie' (Logan WV 'torture' victim recants story)
WV Metro News ^ | 21 Oct 2009 | WV Metro News

It was all a lie. Megan Williams, the Charleston woman who claimed she was kidnapped, sexually abused and beaten by "the Logan Six" now says it never happened.

The Charleston Gazette reports Williams plans to hold a press conference in Columbus, Ohio later today to recant her story.

Williams' attorney Byron Potts told the newspaper his client is tired of living a lie and wants to come clean.

Back in September of 2007 Williams was found by police in an outbuilding at the home of Bobby Brewster. She told investigators Brewster and five others held her hostage for nearly a week, torturing her and sexually assaulting her repeatedly. Many labeled the incident a "hate crime" because Williams is black and the Logan Six are all white.

The usual fools rushed in on this one including the execrable Malik Shabazz. Of course he will be nowhere to be found when Williams fesses up.

Brewster, George Messer, Alisha Burton, Karen Burton, Linnie Burton, Jr. and Danny Combs all pleaded guilty to crime related to Williams' accusations.

Why did they plead guilty if "it was all a lie"?

“Why did they plead guilty if “it was all a lie”?”

My guess is, Lawyers are expensive. Guaranteed, you ain't going to find a pro bono lawyer to defend a “hate crime” against a “poor downtrodden former slave”. However pro bono civil rights attorneys and advocates would be climbing over each other to help the “poor downtrodden former slave” sue the evil white oppressors.

The sad part is “Whitey” won’t go all racist and riot over the suppression of the facts and the clear bigoted attacks by the oppressive Black Driven Politicians.

May the victims of this racial attack get a real shot at some civil retribution against their accusers. We know that the media and the politicians are already trying to purge their files.

It might be a good discussion question to ask the students why this woman would make such a false claim.

Perhaps also, steer it into a cultural discussion about something that has been taught/indoctrinated over and over again about what groups are ALWAYS portrayed as victims and what groups are ALWAYS portrayed as oppressors.

“Pleaded guilty”???

I would be more interested in why they all plead guilty. This wasn’t a minor sentence. They were looking at hard time.

Why did they plead guilty if "it was all a lie"?

What Tupelo said plus they were probably offered a plea deal that made pleading innocent in a she said / he said a real crap shoot. Hate crime adders and all that.

She should face the same jeopardy. Start with letting her serve the combined time served to date by her victims.

Pleading to kidnapping and sexual assault when you are innocent is a bit more than just bad advice.

Most lawyers are quick to make a deal because the majority of them are not very good at their profession.

I agree. And since I have no knowledge of this particular case, maybe I should stop there -- but it's the internet, so I'll throw in a last thought:

If your lawyer tells you that conviction is a done deal, that the simple fact is that you will be doing time for kidnapping and sexual assault, then that kind of ruins your day. But wait! Your lawyer has good news! if you plead innocent and go through a long trial, the jail time will be very severe, but if you plead guilty, the jail time will be bad, but perhaps not as bad as it would be otherwise. So, your lawyer recommends that you make lemonade from lemons and just plead guilty.

Some would. Some wouldn't. I suspect these folks did.

An answer may be in what has happened to a friend of a friend here in Iowa. He was accused of child molesting. I have no idea whether he did or didn't. This guy was offered 10 years to plead guilty. He claims he was innocent, and went to trial. At trial he was found guilty, and was given life with a chance of parole at 40 years. He went in the klink at age 20, and 23 years later, he is still in the klink.

So think about if you are in that sitch. You can go to court, and get life, or possibly get off and get no time. Or you take the 10 years. Maybe these folks decided not to chance the long time.

From what I’m reading, these folks were mostly criminal low-lifes even before this incident, so they may have realized that there was no way they were going to be found not guilty.

I can see one or two taking that deal but not all of them.

Here’s a scenario. They pooled their money and said to her “We’ll give you $30,000 and this pillowcase full of Meth to say it never happened. If you don’t agree, we start killing your family”. It is WV after all.

Since they plead guilty, recanting is going to be messy. The judge can assume the victim is lying now under the guise of “If she says she was lying then, how do we know she isn’t lying now?”.

But Brian Abraham, the former Logan County prosecutor who oversaw those cases, dismissed the news conference as a publicity stunt.

Abraham says the seven, who all pleaded guilty, were convicted on physical evidence and their own statements, not statements from Williams.

You should look at the history of “phrenology” in criminal justice.

‘Your honor, look at the shape of the defendants skull; he is of the “low” type, a born criminal. Even if innocent of these particular charges - he is of the criminal ‘type’ and should be incarcerated away from society.’

‘Your honor, look at the shape of my clients skull. No man of such a “high” type could possibly commit such a heinous crime.’

etc, etc, ad nauseum.

This really is an odd story. If they do have “physical evidence” as they say they do, to back up the confessions, then you’ve got to wonder what’s up with Williams suddenly recanting her statements. She supposedly has some psychological issues (much like Duke lacrosse liar Crystal Mangum).

I’m not sure that *she* has a racial angle on this, so much as she was a vehicle for the Usual Suspects like Shabazz and Sharpton. Revund Al’s already come out with a statement urging the local law to “vindicate” the convicted if it turns out that Williams really was lying. CYA, Al baby, CYA.
